Loss of density-dependence and incomplete control by dominant breeders in a territorial species with density outbreaks

Abstract Background A territory as a prerequisite for breeding limits the maximum number of breeders in a given area, and thus lowers the proportion of breeders if population size increases. However, some territorially breeding animals can have dramatic density fluctuations and little is known about the change from density-dependent processes to density-independence of breeding during a population increase or an outbreak. Mitochondrial glutathione depletion by glutamine in growing tumor cells.

The effect of L-glutamine (Gln) on mitochondrial glutathione (mtGSH) levels in tumor cells was studied in vivo in Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT)-bearing mice. Tumor growth was similar in mice fed a Gln-enriched diet (GED; where 30% of the total dietary nitrogen was from Gln) or a nutritionally complete elemental diet (SD). As compared with non-tumor-bearing mice, tumor growth caused a decrease of blood Gln levels in mice fed an SD but not in those fed a GED. Tumor cells in mice fed a GED showed higher glutaminase and lower Gln synthetase activities than did cells isolated from mice fed an SD. Tin(IV) catalyzed D-galacturonic acid anomerization

A comparative kinetic study of anomerization between the four main forms (alpha/beta-pyranosides and alpha/beta-furanosides) of D-galacturonic acid (GalAH(2), 1) and tin(IV) complexed D-galacturonate ([Sn(CH(3))(2)(GalA)(H(2)O)(2)], 2) in D(2)O, is reported. Important differences are shown by pD vs. mutarotation rate profiles of 1 and 2. Spherical polymeric microparticles have been prepared by a reverse phase suspension polymerization technique. The starting polymer was alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA), partially derivatized with glycidylmethacrylate (GMA). PHEA-GMA copolymer (PHG) was crosslinked in the presence of N,N'-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) or N,N'-ethylenebisacrylamide (EBA). 5-fluorouracil was incorporated into PHG-DMAA or PHG-EBA beads both during and after the crosslinking process. Increase in stability and change in supramolecular structure of β-carotene through encapsulation into polylactic acid nanoparticles

International audience; β-Carotene (BC) exhibits controversial antioxidant properties as it may act also as a prooxidant. Its stability toward oxidation depends on its dispersion form and can be increased through encapsulation. In this study, oxidation of BC from synthetic and natural origins was investigated after dispersion in Tween micelles or poly lactic acid (PLA) particles. Two oxidation systems were used: autooxidation and oxidation by xanthine oxidase-generated-reactive oxygen species. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with dyslipidemia and increased cardiovascular risk. We assessed the effects of apolipoprotein E ( APOE) genotype on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particle size and lipid subclasses (separated by gradient gel electrophoresis) in patients with OSA.
