Feeding enhances extracellular lactate of local origin in the rostromedial hypothalamus but not in the cerebellum.

Abstract The use of brain microdialysis together with chronic vascular catheterization allowed us to assay extracellular fluid lactate (ECF L ) in both the ventromedial–paraventricular (VMH–PVN) area of the hypothalamus and the cerebellum, in parallel with measures of plasma levels, and in relation to food intake. A 45 min scheduled meal increased VMH–PVN ECF L by 28%. This increase was not observed in the cerebellum. The prandial increase in plasma glucose (43%, from 4.74 to 6.77 mM) and lactate (84%, from 0.83 to 1.53 mM) showed a different temporal pattern and lasted longer than that of the ECF L . Vinblastine-induced autophagocytosis: effects on liver glycogen

The possible similarities of the mechanism by which vinblastine induces autophagocytosis in liver were compared with the known effects of glucagon in glucagon-induced autophagocytosis. A single intraperitoneal injection of vinblastine produced a wave of autophagocytosis in less than 0.5 h in mouse hepatocytes. Liver glycogen content decreases simultaneously and blood glucose first increased and then decreased below control values. Both liver cAMP concentration and the activity of glycogen phosphorylase remained unchanged. Transforming growth factors (TGF-alpha and TGF-beta1) in the determination of vitality and wound age: immunohistochemical study on human skin wounds.

In continuation of former investigations on proinflammatory cytokines, in the present study the relevance of the transforming growth factors TGF-alpha and TGF-beta1 was evaluated for the diagnosis of vitality and wound age. Paraffin sections from human skin wounds due to sharp force influence, which had been collected in operations and autopsies, were investigated using immunohistochemistry. Bone morphogenetic protein-6 (BMP-6) belongs to the family of TGF-beta-related growth factors. In the developing epidermis, expression of BMP-6 coincides with the onset of stratification. Expression persists perinatally but declines after day 6 postpartum, although it can still be detected in adult skin by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis. SPECTRAL COMPOSITION OF EATING SOUNDS GENERATED BY CRISPY, CRUNCHY AND CRACKLY FOODS

Separate air and bone conducted food sounds generated by six subjects biting into eight foods were recorded and analysed by a fast Fourier transform (FFT) signal analyser. A panel of 60 subjects classified the 8 foods according to their texture: crispy, crunchy and crackly and these textural characteristics were described by spectral characteristics of biting sounds. Crispy foods (such as extruded flat breads) were found to generate high pitched sounds that show a high level of frequencies higher than 5 kHz, especially for air conduction. Varietal and geographic classification of french red wines in terms of elements, amino acids and aromatic alcohols

Thirty-four French red wines from three regions already studied for their anthocyanin and flavonoid constituents have been further analysed for elements, amino acids and aromatic alcohols. An interpretation of the differences between wines related to their different geographic and varietal origins has been made from the results of statistical analyses: F statistic, principal component analysis (PCA) and stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA).
