The Pseudo-Relatives and other Correspondent Constructions in the Romance Languages

This chapter deals with the use of different construction selected by perception verbs in Romance, focusing in particular on Pseudo-relatives. They are compared with gerunds and infinitives, which are also used with perception verbs in Romance.

The death of Charles II of Habsburg and the designation of Philip of Anjou as the legitimate heir caused - in any territory belonging to the Spanish monarchy - the definition of new political languages and the creation of new networks of political and social relationships. This happened also in the kingdom of Sicily, where the internal and international dynamics were strictly connected. In this context, the role played by the island was not passive, but allowed – respecting the hierarchies of power – to build networks of relationships, to achieve specific goals and to rethink the participation of the Kingdom within the larger context of Spanish monarchy. This essay analyses certain passages by the 19th century Sicilian historiography on the Spanish vice-reign in the island where the main tendency was the anti-Spanish movement. The joint opinion of the historians, here analyzed, consisted of a great love for their country based on a nostalgic cult of its indipendent reign and its institutions. The latter were a constant reason of consolation compared to the present reality, which seemed very disappointing and awkward if compared with the "mythical" previos ages. In the present paper, we have analysed the role of age and sex in the fatal outcome of COVID-19, as there are conflicting results in the literature. As such, we have answered three controversial questions regarding this aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic: (1) Have women been more resilient than men? (2) Did centenarians die less than the remaining older people? (3) Were older centenarians more resistant to SARS-CoV-2 than younger centenarians?
