Cerebrovascular involvement in fabry disease: current status of knowledge.
2014
Fabry disease (FD) is a rare and highly debilitating lysosomal storage disorder that results from a total lack of, or deficiency in, the enzyme α-galactosidase A (α-Gal A) because of mutations in the GLA gene.1 FD is inherited as an X-linked trait; many of the male patients develop a classic severe phenotype with early onset of symptoms, whereas heterozygous females exhibit phenotypes ranging from asymptomatic to major involvement of vital organs.2 Most families inherit private mutations; to date, >600 mutations have been identified and are listed in the online FD database (Fabry-database.org).3 The deficiency in α-Gal A causes the accumulation of globotriaosylceramide (GL-3; also abbreviat…
Incidence of Diabetes Following Ramipril or Rosiglitazone Withdrawal
2011
OBJECTIVE To examine the impact of withdrawing rosiglitazone and ramipril medication on diabetes incidence after closeout of the Diabetes REduction Assessment with ramipril and rosiglitazone Medication (DREAM) trial. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The 3,366 DREAM subjects at trial end who had not developed diabetes while taking double-blind study medication were transferred to single-blind placebo for 2 to 3 months before undergoing an oral glucose tolerance test. Glycemic status was analyzed for the trial plus washout period and for the washout period alone. RESULTS Following median (interquartile range) 71 (63–86) days drug withdrawal, overall glycemic status remained modestly improved in t…
Prevalence and Prognostic Impact of Diabetes in Takotsubo Syndrome: Insights From the International, Multicenter GEIST Registry
2017
OBJECTIVE In view of low prevalence rates, diabetes is discussed as a protective factor for the occurrence of Takotsubo syndrome (TTS). Furthermore, it was associated with improved outcome in a small single-center analysis. Therefore, this study assessed the prevalence and prognostic relevance of concomitant diabetes in TTS. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 826 patients with TTS were enrolled in an international, multicenter, registry-based study (eight centers in Italy and Germany). All-cause mortality was compared between patients with diabetes and patients without diabetes, and the independent predictive value of diabetes was evaluated in multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS …
Combining hashing and enciphering algorithms for epidemiological analysis of gathered data.
2008
Summary Objectives: Compiling individual records coming from different sources is necessary for multi-center studies. Legal aspects can be satisfied by implementing anonymization procedures. When using these procedures with a different key for each study it becomes almost impossible to link records from separate data collections. Methods: The originality of the method relies on the way the combination of hashing and enciphering techniques is performed: like in asymmetric encryption, two keys are used but the private key depends on the patient’s identity. Results: The combination of hashing and enciphering techniques provides a great improvement in the overall security of the proposed scheme…
MAGICPL: A Generic Process Description Language for Distributed Pseudonymization Scenarios
2021
Abstract Objectives Pseudonymization is an important aspect of projects dealing with sensitive patient data. Most projects build their own specialized, hard-coded, solutions. However, these overlap in many aspects of their functionality. As any re-implementation binds resources, we would like to propose a solution that facilitates and encourages the reuse of existing components. Methods We analyzed already-established data protection concepts to gain an insight into their common features and the ways in which their components were linked together. We found that we could represent these pseudonymization processes with a simple descriptive language, which we have called MAGICPL, plus a relati…
GPCALMA: A Grid-based tool for mammographic screening
2005
The next generation of High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments requires a GRID approach to a distributed computing system and the associated data management: the key concept is the Virtual Organisation (VO), a group of distributed users with a common goal and the will to share their resources. A similar approach is being applied to a group of Hospitals which joined the GPCALMA project (Grid Platform for Computer Assisted Library for MAmmography), which will allow common screening programs for early diagnosis of breast and, in the future, lung cancer. HEP techniques come into play in writing the application code, which makes use of neural networks for the image analysis and proved to be useful…
In particolare sulle voci carusu (tras…
A precise stroke classification for evaluation of ischemic stroke subtypes and their relation with diabetes: is TOAST the best?
2010
To The Editor: Regarding the study by Turin et al1 performed to estimate the secular time trends in incidence using a population-based stroke registry in Japan, we discuss some issues of potential interest. First, have the authors classified stroke subtypes according TOAST classification or Oxfordshire classification? No mention has been made in the text concerning the classification methodology of ischemic stroke. It is conceivable that applying the TOAST classification2 of ischemic stroke (a classification with clinical, pathophysiological, anatomic, and instrumental basis that is easily applicable and widely validated) could provide a more precise selection of patients with lacunar strok…
2017
The publication in 1696 of the Catalan-Latin dictionary Gazophylacium Catalano-Latinum by Joan Lacavalleria led to the incorporation into Catalan of a large number of technical terms, in spite of the early modern sociocultural context being unfavourable to scientific and technical developments. The Gazophylacium is the Catalan version of a French-Latin dictionary, Le Dictionaire royal augmente by Francois-Antoine Pomey. Therefore, Lacavalleria may be considered as an initiator of the systematic transfer procedure of terminological units of French origin into Catalan, which were also adopted by many other languages of culture until well into the twentieth century, and that favoured the circu…
