Steroidal saponins from the roots of Smilax aspera subsp. mauritanica

2008

Two new steroidal saponins (1, 2) were isolated from the roots of Smilax aspera subsp. mauritanica (POIR.) ARCANG. (Liliaceae), together with the known curillin G (3), asparagoside E (4), asparoside A (5), asparoside B (6) and the phenolic compound resveratrol (7). Their structures were established mainly on the basis of 600 MHz 2D-NMR spectral data. 3 exhibited antifungal activity against the human pathogenic yeasts Candida albicans, C. glabrata and C. tropicalis (minimum inhibitory concentrations of 25, 25 and 50 microg/ml, respectively) whereas the other compounds were inactive.

Polyaspartylhydrazide Copolymer-Based Supramolecular Vesicular Aggregates as Delivery Devices for Anticancer Drugs

2008

In this paper we report on three different hydrophilic copolymers based on alpha,beta-polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy) bearing butyric groups in the side chain (C 4) (PAHy-C 4) or a combination of butyric groups and positive charged residues ((carboxypropyl)trimethylammonium chloride, CPTACl) (PAHy-C 4-CPTA) that were synthesized and used for the preparation of new supramolecular vesicular aggregates (SVAs) containing gemcitabine as an antitumor drug. Gemcitabine-loaded SVAs containing synthesized PAHy derivatives were characterized from the physicochemical and technological point of view and the in vitro toxicity and anticancer activity on two different human cancer cell lines, i.e., CaCo-2 (h…

Synthesis, antimony-121 mössbauer and infrared spectral characterization of antimony trifluoride and catecholatoantimony(III) fluoride adducts with t…

1988

Abstract The synthesis of the adducts SbF 3 (L) and (C 6 H 4 O 2 )SbF(L) [L = pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde- 2-pyridylhydrazone (paphyH); 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (terpy) and 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (tpta)] is reported. Infrared data are consistent with the occurred chelation from the terdentate ligand providing an overall pseudo-seven coordination at Sb. The stereoactivity of the antimony lone pair is inferred from the large value of the Mossbauer quadrupole coupling constant observed for all the compounds.

Studies on antimony trifluoride in thiocyanate salt matrices. Evidence for the formation of fluoro-thiocyanato anti-mony(III) species

1990

Abstract Antimony trifluoride can be dissolved in fused KNCS or NH4NCS giving yellow-orange solutions which are stable only for a short time just above their melting point. Infrared an Mossbauer results on solidified samples reveal the formation of mixed fluoro-thiocyanato antimony(III) species and indicate a different behaviour in the two matrices.

The determination of antimony and arsenic concentrations in fly ash by hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry

2011

Abstract Hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (HG-ICP-OES) was used in the determination of As and Sb concentrations in fly ash samples. The effect of sample pre-treatment reagents and measurement parameters used for hydride generation was evaluated. Due to memory effects observed, the appropriate read delay time was adjusted to 60 s resulting in RSDs 0.6% and 2.3% for As and Sb, respectively. The most suitable volumes of pre-reduction reagents for 10 mL of sample were 4 mL of KI/ascorbic acid (5%) and 6 mL of HCl (conc.). The determination of Sb was significantly interfered by HF, but the interference could be eliminated by adding 2 mL of saturated bo…

Unveiling the oxidation behavior of liquid-phase exfoliated antimony nanosheets

2020

Abstract Antimonene, a monolayer of β-antimony, is increasingly attracting considerable attention, more than that of other monoelemental two-dimensional materials, due to its intriguing physical and chemical properties. Under ambient conditions, antimonene exhibits a high thermodynamic stability and good structural integrity. Some theoretical calculations predicted that antimonene would have a high oxidation tendency. However, it remains poorly investigated from the experimental point of view. In this work, we study the oxidation behavior of antimonene nanosheets (ANS) prepared by ultrasonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation. Using a set of forefront analytical techniques, a clear effe…

Determination of antimony in drinking waters by an inexpensive, reproducible hydride generator for atomic spectroscopy.

1991

A method for determining antimony in drinking waters is described. In order to prevent a substantial error caused by the different oxidation states of antimony, Sb(V) is reduced to Sb(III) with potassium iodide-ascorbic acid. Covalent hydride is generated with a home made device by adding NaBH4. The hydride is then atomized in a flame-heated silica tube and atomic absorption is measured spectrophotometrically. The optimal conditions for this determination are discussed and interference effects are described. Results obtained by determining linearity range (0-200 ng), detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) limits (LOD = 0.347 ng/ml, LOQ = 1.158 ng/ml), precision (instrumental CV 4.08% and me…

Lidocaine inhibits potassium efflux and hemolysis in erythrocytes during oxidative stress in vitro.

2000

Lidocaine is a widely used local anesthetic agent. The aim of this work was to study the action of lidocaine on human red blood cells exposed to an oxidative stress in vitro. Blood was obtained from healthy volunteers. After separation from plasma, the erythrocytes were suspended in phosphate buffer. Oxidative stress was induced by incubation with a free radical generator, the 2,2' azobis (2-amidinopropane) hydrochloride (AAPH). Erythrocytes were incubated with or without lidocaine at two concentrations (36.93 and 73.85 microM) and with or without AAPH (20 mM). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was performed to identify the free radical species generated by AAPH using the s…

Synthesis and evaluation of diverse thio avarol derivatives as potential UVB photoprotective candidates.

2007

Semisynthesis of 13 new thio avarol derivatives (4-16) and in vitro evaluation on the photodamage response induced by UVB irradiation are described. Their ability to inhibit NF-kappaB activation and TNF-alpha generation in HaCaT cells as well as their antioxidant capacity in human neutrophils has also been studied. Among them we have identified two monophenyl thio avarol derivatives (4-5) lacking cytotoxicity which can be considered promising UVB photoprotective agents through the potent inhibition of NF-kappaB activation with a mild antioxidant pharmacological profile.

Cooking influence on physico-chemical fruit characteristics of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)

2016

Physico-chemical traits of three eggplant genotypes ("Tunisina", "Buia" and "L 305") were evaluated before and after two cooking treatments (grilling and boiling). Different genotypes revealed different changes after cooking, with "Tunisina" showing a better retention of phytochemicals with respect to other two genotypes. The main physical phenomena were water loss during grilling, and dry matter loss after boiling. Chlorogenic acid, the main phenolic in eggplant, resulted higher in grilled samples, while delphinidin glycosides resulted more retained in boiled samples. Glycoalkaloids, thiols and biogenic amines were generally stable, while 5-hydroxy-methyl-furfural was found only in grilled…
