An Approach on the Hydrogen Absorption in Carbon Black after Gamma Irradiation

2013

In this work, different samples of an industrial carbon black are used to study the hydrogen intake from an over pres-surized atmosphere and its changes due to alteration of its level of crystallinity produced by ¿-irradiation. The monitor-ing of the hydrogen adsorption was made by means of thermogravimetric analysis and by measurements of some elec-trical parameters as the Seebeck coefficient. X-ray diffraction shows that the irradiation diminishes the level of crystal-line perfection. These results show interesting possibilities to use carbon black as cheap hydrogen absorbers.

Estimation of hydrogen transfer mechanisms in composite materials

2008

Abstract Spill-over effect as a hydrogen transfer mechanism is proposed to explain an increased capacity of hydrogen absorption and improvement of hydrogen activation kinetics in composite material based on the AB5 type metal hydride and powdered glass. A raw lanthanum nickel alloy AB5 with small amount of additives was used as catalyst and bulk material for hydrogen storage, and a borosilicate glass powder with developed surface was applied as a support material. Thermogravimetric technique to determine an absorbed amount of the hydrogen in materials and X-ray powder diffraction analysis for structural investigations was used.

Stability of irinotecan-loaded drug eluting beads (DC BeadTM) used for transarterial chemoembolization

2009

Purpose. The aim of this study was to determine the loading efficiency, physicochemical stability, and release of irinotecan-loaded DC BeadsTM (bead size 100—300 μm, 300—500 μm) before and after mixing with nonionic contrast medium (Accupaque® 300, Imeron® 300, Ultravist ® 300) during a prolonged period of time (28 days) when stored at room temperature or refrigerated. Methods. DC Beads TM were loaded with 50 mg irinotecan (Campto®) per milliliter beads in a 2 h loading period. Drug loading efficiency and stability were determined by measuring the irinotecan concentration in the excess solution. A free-flowing in vitro elution method for a period of 2 h and phosphate buffered solution (PBS…

Cytokine- and Interferon-Modulating Properties of Echinacea spp. Root Tinctures Stored at −20°C for 2 Years

2007

Echinacea spp. phytomedicines are popular for treating upper respiratory infections. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the immunomodulatory properties of Echinacea tinctures from seven species after being stored at -20 degrees C for 2 years. Two experimental techniques were employed using human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). In the first set of experiments, PBMCs were stimulated in vitro with tinctures alone and assayed for proliferation and production of interleukin-10 (IL-10), IL-12, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). In the second set of experiments, subjects were immunized with influenza vaccine. PBMCs from vaccinated individuals were stimulated in v…

Microbial dynamics in durum wheat kernels during aging

2020

In the present work the microbial dynamics in wheat kernels were evaluated over time. The main aim of this research was to study the resistance of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts associated to unprocessed cereals used for bread making during long term conservation. To this purpose four Triticum durum Desf. genotypes including two modern varieties (Claudio and Simeto) and two Sicilian wheat landraces (Russello and Timilia) were analysed by a combined culture-independent and -dependent microbiological approach after one, two or three years from cultivation and threshing. DNA based MiSeq Illumina technology was applied to reveal the entire bacterial composition of all semolina samples. T…

Long-term stability study of clofarabine injection concentrate and diluted clofarabine infusion solutions

2011

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical stability of clofarabine (CAFdA) injection concentrate and ready-to-use CAFdA infusion solutions over a prolonged period of 28 days. Methods: To determine the stability of CAFdA infusion solutions, the injection concentrate (Evoltra®, 1 mg/mL, Genzyme) was diluted either with 0.9% sodium chloride or 5% glucose infusion solution. The resulting concentrations of 0.2 mg/mL or 0.6 mg/mL, respectively, were chosen to represent the lower and upper limit of the ordinary concentration range. Test solutions were stored under refrigeration (2–8°C) or at room temperature either light protected or exposed to light. CAFdA concentrati…

Enzymatic, physicochemical, nutritional and phytochemical profile changes of apple (Golden Delicious L.) juice under supercritical carbon dioxide and…

2018

The impact of supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCD) (10-60 MPa/45 °C/30 min) and subsequent 10 weeks storage at 4 °C on polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD) activities, phenolic profile, vitamin C, sugars, physicochemical properties of cloudy apple juices was investigated. No significant changes in sugars and total polyphenols were observed, whereas significant degradation (≈28%) of vitamin C and individual polyphenols (≈18%) was noted after SCCD treatment. After 4 weeks storage only 34% of vitamin C was retained and no vitamin C was detected after this time. Ten weeks of storage caused hydrolysis of sucrose in 15%, whereas degradation of individual polyphenols ranged from 43 to 50% dep…

EFFECT OF PROCESSING TEMPERATURE VARIATION ON STORAGE STABILITY OF TIRE RUBBER MODIFIED BINDERS

2012

Tire Rubber Modified Binders (TR-MBs), produced through wet process and used worldwide (e.g. asphalt rubber), have been demonstrated to provide various benefits to pavements and, moreover, represent a good opportunity for recycling tire rubber. However, this technology is still struggling to be fully adopted in Europe, mainly because of the poor stability of TR-MBs during high temperature storage, which leads to high initial costs in modifying existing asphalt plants. No-agitation TR-MBs (also known as terminal blends) are proving to be a great option and their development could also be the key to spreading the use of tire rubber in paving applications in Europe. This paper aims to enrich t…

Status of EU DEMO heat transport and power conversion systems

2018

Abstract DEMO in Europe is considered to be the nearest-term reactor design to follow ITER and capable of demonstrating production of electricity, operating with a closed fuel-cycle and to be a facilitating machine between ITER and a commercial reactor. The aim of this paper is to show the design progress of the complex system’s “chain” devoted to the extraction of the plasma generated pulsed thermal power and its conversion into electricity delivered to the grid, including the Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS), the Power Conversion System (PCS) and the Intermediate Heat Transport System (IHTS) – provided by an Energy Storage System (ESS) – in between PHTS and PCS, which is introduced fo…
