2019

The aim of this article is to underline the doctrinal peculiarities of Anglicanism through examination of the 39 Articles of religion. Unlike other coeval protestant confessions of faith, the genesis of the 39 Articles was eminently dictated by political reasons, that is to say the reinforcement of the English monarchy through the pursuit of religious unity in the Country

Elites and Ecclesiastical Careers in Early Modern Sicily : Bishops, Abbots and Knights

2014

The most recent historiography has confirmed the importance of ecclesiastical careers within the ranks of the Catholic Church (bishops and cardinals) as well as religious orders (abbots and priors) and military orders (primarily the Order of Malta) for early modern family strategies. They were one of the main paths followed by cadet members of the nobility to build, strengthen and even enable the survival of the social prestige and political influence of their families. The role of the clergy was in fact crucial in performing a valuable function of mediation, especially with regard to political power in order to achieve increasingly prestigious awards (titles, offices, prebends). The aim of…

Illicit trades and smuggling activities on the island of Stromboli, 1808–1816: gender roles during a commercial crisis

2020

This article examines the impact of the Continental Blockade upon a local fishing and agricultural economy in the Mediterranean by focusing on the illicit trades that flourished on Stromboli. The island became a strategic location for smuggling between the warring kingdoms of British allied Naples and French ruled Sicily. This paper argues that the Blockade allowed Stromboli to join the network of maritime traffic that had been dominated by the two biggest islands in the archipelago. Although equally integrated into agriculture and fishing, women participated in the fraudulent sale of prize goods but were excluded from large-scale smuggling operations. L'étude examine l'impact du Blocus con…

Forced monachizations, judicial strategies and noble logic: Sister Anna Maddalena Valdina

2017

In 1640 Anna, the daughter of the prince of Valdina, was forced to live in a convent (for patrimonial reasons) in Palermo along with three sisters. She was seven years old and remained there until 1699. First she asked her father and then her brother to leave the monastic life that she never accepted. Her story is inscribed within the phenomenon of the so-called "forced monachizations ", to which the Council of Trent had tried to remedy for. After the death of her brother, in 1693, now about sixty years old Anna asked the archbishop of Palermo to nullify his religious profession and to return to the lay state. Thus begins a very severe judicial dispute that triggers a violent jurisdictional…

Interesting insights into the treatment of madness are to be gained from the…
