On the pyrophytism in the Mediterranean area
2015
Authors briefly present some observations and reflections on the “seeding strategy” of some plant species (Cistus spp., Cistaceae, in particular) in the Mediterranean area in relation to fire: they conclude it does not seem a specific adaptation to wildfires (as suggested in a relevant part of the recent literature), but a generalistic adaptation to open, high energy and variable habitats with aleatory fluctuations. The difference is important both for theoretical and applied aspects, e.g. for the correct management of Cistus species and of other Mediterranean species and habitats. Fire is undoubtedly a major ecological factor in the Mediterranean area. Many botanists have postulated the re…
La promoción de la actividad física en el lugar de trabajo: demanda de actividad física en dos mercados madrileños. (Promotion of physical activity a…
2009
Promotion of physical activity at the worksite is part of the global strategies for health promotion. The introduction of physical activity programs at worksites requires an analysis of the current demand in specific contexts. This study analyzes the demand of physical activity among workers at two markets in Madrid: "Maravillas" and "Las Aguilas". It is hypothesized that in both markets latent demand (people that do not practice physical activity but are wishing to do so) prevails over actual demand (people that already practice physical activity) and absent demand (people that do not practice physical activity and do not wish to do so). Results show that this hypothesis is fulfilled at "M…
Adefovir for lamivudine resistant HBV: More than meets the eye
2007
– In patients with LAM resistance and high levels of HBV-DNA, especially if HBeAg positive, it may be difficult to obtain a strong virological suppression with ADV. – Restrictive criteria are needed to define virological response (HBV-DNA < 10 3 copies/ml or 200 IU/ml). – Early finding of non-response or of suboptimal response after 9–12 months of ADV therapy suggests a high risk of emergence of ADV-resistant strains and should prompt a change of treatment strategy. In patients with cirrhosis, due to the risk of liver failure, treatment changes should be considered even earlier, at 3–6 months.
A Sequential Quadratic Programming Method for Volatility Estimation in Option Pricing
2006
Our goal is to identify the volatility function in Dupire's equation from given option prices. Following an optimal control approach in a Lagrangian framework, we propose a globalized sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm with a modified Hessian - to ensure that every SQP step is a descent direction - and implement a line search strategy. In each level of the SQP method a linear-quadratic optimal control problem with box constraints is solved by a primal-dual active set strategy. This guarantees L^1 constraints for the volatility, in particular assuring its positivity. The proposed algorithm is founded on a thorough first- and second-order optimality analysis. We prove the existe…
ANÁLISIS DE LOS HOTELES DE ALTA CATEGORÍA DE CROACIA DESDE EL ENFOQUE HOTEL-HUÉSPED
2011
Brazil, Russia, and Turkey: How New Democracies Deal with International Models of Higher Education?
2019
The purpose of this chapter is to address the issue of national translations of international influences and trends in higher education systems, as well as resistance to such paradigms. Three emerging countries, that is, Brazil, Russia, and Turkey, with very different geographical and historical contexts, will be considered as case studies. As young democracies, their strong national sentiment can contradict external recommendations in terms of the management of higher education.
The civic university: the policy and leadership challenges
2018
The societal role of higher education institutions has long been a topic of interest amongst academics and policy maker communities alike. In Europe, the EU’s Lisbon strategy (2000–2010) catapulted...
(208)po populated through EC/beta(+) decay
2020
The structure of 208Po resulting from the EC/β + decay of 208At was studied at CERN’s ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS). The high statistics afforded by the high yield of 208At and the high efficiency HPGe clusters at the IDS allowed for greater insight into lower intensity transitions and thus significant expansion of the 208Po level scheme. Furthermore, investigation into the isomeric state yielded a new half life 377(9) ns in addition to uncovering new transitions populating the state.
Social media evaluation metrics
2016
Background. There are many methods how specialists can evaluate return of online marketing activities. Most of the methods out there are designed for versatile use. But each online marketing tool has its own unique specific metrics that should be taken into account when measuring the return of marketing activities. Authors believe that the methods that are designed to evaluate online marketing activities should also be more specific. Hence authors believe that more specific online marketing revenue determination methods should be proposed. Objectives. The aim of this paper is to propose a formula that can be used to evaluate the return of social media activities depending on consumer purcha…
The bright and dark sides of CEO hubris: Assessing cultural distance in international business
2021
This paper aims to enrich the behavioral theory of international business strategyby investigating how CEO hubris (i.e., excess pride and confidence) affects inter-national strategic choices, that is, location selection, entry timing, and modes ofentry into the target market. Specifically, we focus on the relationship betweencultural distance and international strategic choices and consider hubris as a mech-anism that influences CEOs’ decisions. Our conceptual framework recognizes thatthe performance of international strategies managed by hubristic CEOs isextremely volatile. On the one hand, we corroborate the idea that hubris has adark side that may lead to pernicious outcomes. On the othe…
