Understanding Discipline in Families of Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Structural Equation Model
2009
One hundred and fifty-five mothers of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) completed a semi-structured interview, the Parenting Stress Index Questionnaire (Abidin, 1990), to evaluate parenting stress. The Parenting Scale (Arnold, O’Leary, Wolff & Acker, 1993) was also administered to measure dysfunctional discipline strategies. Structural equation modeling was used to test a model in which the independent variables were the Child’s Characteristics and the Socio-Educational Status of his or her family; intermediate variables were Parenting Stress concerning the Child Domain and concerning the Parent Domain; and the dependent variable was Parental Discipline. The resu…
High-resolution computed tomography quantitation of emphysema is correlated with selected lung function values in stable COPD
2012
Background: The literature shows conflicting results when high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scores of emphysema were correlated with different indices of airflow obstruction. Objectives: We correlated HRCT scores of emphysema with different indices of airflow obstruction. Methods: We performed HRCT of the chest in 59 patients, all smokers or ex-smokers, with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease of different severity [GOLD stages I–IV; mean age ± SD 67.8 ± 7.3 years; pack/years 51.0 ± 34.6; percent predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1</su…
An impaired peroxisomal targeting sequence leading to an unusual bicompartmental distribution of cytosolic epoxide hydrolase
1991
AbstractTo gain an understanding of the mechanism by which the subcellular distribution of cytosolic epoxide hydrolase (cEH) is directed, we have analyzed the carboxy terminal region of rat liver cEH by means of cDNA cloning to define the structure of its possible peroxisomal targeting sequence (PTS). Purified cEH was subjected to peptide analysis following endoproteinase Glu-C digestion and HPLC-separation of the fragments. The obtained sequence information was used to perform PCR experiments resulting in the isolation of a 680 bp cDNA clone encoding the carboxy terminus of cEH. The deduced amino acid sequence displays a terminal tripeptide Ser-Lys-Ile which is highly homologous to the PTS…
Bisdihydrodiols, rather than dihydrodiol oxides, are the principal microsomal metabolites of tumorigenic trans-3,4-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydrodibenz[a,h]an…
1994
Several studies on metabolism and biological activity of tumorigenic dibenz[a,h]anthracene (DBA) and its derivatives have led to the conclusion that the M-region dihydrodiol, trans-3,4-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydro-DBA (DBA-3,4-dihydrodiol), is the precursor of the ultimate mutagenic and tumorigenic metabolite of DBA with the presumed structure of a bay-region dihydrodiol oxide. Incubations of DBA-3,4-dihydrodiol (50 microM) with the microsomal hepatic fraction of Sprague-Dawley rats pretreated with Aroclor 1254 yielded more than 13 metabolites upon separation by HPLC. anti-3,4-Dihydroxy-1,2-epoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-DBA [0.27 nmol/(nmol of P450.15 min)] could be identified for the first time by UV …
Prophylactic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Placement in a Sporadic Desmin Related Myopathy and Cardiomyopathy
2004
Desminopathy is a neuromuscular disorder associated with the accumulation of the protein desmin. This article reports a case of a man with a mutation in the desmin gene suffering from cardiomyopathy and skeletal myopathy. This patient underwent implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation for prognostic considerations and subsequently developed a sustained ventricular tachycardia (SVT). While nonsustained VTs (NSVT) have previously been reported, this is the first time that a SVT could be seen in a patient with this disease.
Study of three urethral pressure recording devices: Theoretical considerations
1978
Using a bladder-urethra model, 2 perfusion catheters (open side and open tip) were compared to the balloon catheter. The most accurate results were obtained using the balloon catheter. Based on the law of continuity and Bernouilli's law, the disadvantage of the open side catheter is due to the inconstant diameter of the sum of the side holes. Therefore, the measured pressure is not necessarily identical to the real pressure. The open tip catheter measures the opening pressure and the recorded pressure does not necessarily reflect the pressure at the site of the tip hole. The balloon catheter has elastic and plastic characteristics. Optimum results were obtained only with prestretch of the b…
Validity and Internal Consistency of the Preschool-FLAT, a New Tool for the Assessment of Food Literacy in Young Children from the Training-To-Health…
2020
Background: The importance of assessing “food literacy” since youth has been highlighted and, to this purpose, valid and consistent instruments are needed. This study aimed to assess the validity and internal consistency of the preschool-FLAT (Food Literacy Assessment Tool). Methods. 505 children from 21 kindergartens, recruited within the Training-to-Health Project in Palermo (Italy), underwent oral sessions and activities on food-related aspects. Their knowledge/skills were recorded in the preschool-FLAT. The following scale measures were assessed: Content validity; internal consistency (Chronbach’s alpha coefficients); construct validity (Structural Equation Modeling&md…
Is Food Self-Sufficiency Conducive to Long-Term Growth? An Assessment of Malthus (1803) on the International Corn Trade.
2017
In this article, we have reconstructed Malthus’s views on growth and international corn trade in the second edition of his An Essay on the Principle of Population (1803) and shown their theoretical consistency with Malthus’s food self-sufficiency policy proposal advanced in Grounds of an Opinion on the Policy of Restricting the Importation of Foreign Corn ([1815] 1986b), the protectionist pamphlet that elicited Ricardo’s vehement reaction in “Essay on Profits.” Malthus’s (1803) main thesis was that the contemporary British unbalanced growth pattern was not viable. In order to avoid premature stagnation, he thought that Great Britain should both follow a pattern of balanced growth and pursue…
Stationary and non-stationary stochastic response of linear fractional viscoelastic systems
2012
Abstract A method is presented to compute the stochastic response of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structural systems with fractional derivative damping, subjected to stationary and non-stationary inputs. Based on a few manipulations involving an appropriate change of variable and a discretization of the fractional derivative operator, the equation of motion is reverted to a set of coupled linear equations involving additional degrees of freedom, the number of which depends on the discretization of the fractional derivative operator. As a result of the proposed variable transformation and discretization, the stochastic analysis becomes very straightforward and simple since, based on stand…
Macroelement Model for In-Plane and Out-of-Plane Responses of Masonry Infills in Frame Structures
2018
A new macroelement model is presented in this paper for the simulation of the in-plane (IP) and out-of-plane (OOP) response of infilled frames subjected to seismic actions. The model consists of two diagonal, one horizontal, and one vertical struts. Each strut is represented by two fiber-section beam-column elements. The model is able to capture the arching action of the wall under an OOP load as well as the interaction between the IP and OOP actions. The proposed modeling approach is sufficiently simple and efficient that it can be used for the static or dynamic analysis of an entire structural system. An experimental validation has been carried out. A further numerical study performed wit…
