Magnetic stimulation in the definition of eloquent cortical areas

2003

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the physiological principles of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and focus on detailing the techniques used in TMS mapping of the motor cortex relating it to the use of TMS in the presurgical assessment of patients with epilepsy. Since the main measure of TMS is the motor potential evoked in muscles, fine delineation of the functional topography of cortex is limited mainly to the primary sensorimotor cortex. In addition, TMS might be helpful to identify language dominance. The characterization of eloquent cortical areas is important in epilepsy surgery for the planning of the resection. TMS is not routinely employed for this purpose and TMS ma…

Early attraction in temporally controlled sight reading of music

2018

A music reader has to “look ahead” from the notes currently being played—this has usually been called the Eye-Hand Span. Given the restrictions on processing time due to tempo and meter, the Early Attraction Hypothesis suggests that sight readers are likely to locally increase the span of looking ahead in the face of complex upcoming symbols (or symbol relationships). We argue that such stimulus-driven effects on looking ahead are best studied using a measure of Eye-Time Span (ETS) which redefines looking ahead as the metrical distance between the position of a fixation in the score and another position that corresponds to the point of metrical time at fixation onset. In two experiments of …

Spotlight on fundus autofluorescence

2018

Ana M Calvo-Maroto,1 Alejandro Cerviño2 1Department of Ophthalmology, Clínica Universidad de Navarra, University of Navarra, Madrid, Spain; 2Optometry Research Group, Department of Optics and Optometry and Vision Sciences, University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain Abstract: Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging is based on the fluorescence from ocular endogenous fluorophores located in the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, mainly lipofuscin and melanin. It is a noninvasive technique that provides information about the spatial distribution of lipofuscin/melanin and retinal pigment epithelium health status. An overview about the fluorophores responsible for FAF imaging and t…

Samarbeid i hjertestansteam : en kvalitativ studie om intensivsyke- pleieres erfaringer fra samarbeid i hjertestansteam under resuscitering

2014

Masteroppgave i spesialsykepleie – Universitetet i Agder 2014 Project backround: Several areas in health care have recently seen an increased focus on the importance of cooperation. In its guidelines from 2010, The American Heart Association (AHA) places increased importance on non-technical skills in the training of personnel who perform advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). The Better And Systematic Team Foundation (BEST), have in recent years contributed to a growing focus on cooperation in trauma teams. However, in Norway, there is little research directly linked to the issue of cooperation in Norwegian cardiac arrest teams. Aim:The aim of this study is to gain knowledge about the exper…

The mechanisms of the action of omega-3s in the retina

2013

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual loss in Western countries after the age of 50y. Based on large-scale epidemiologic studies, it appears now as evident that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) provide benefits in preventing both, early and late stages of AMD. The aim of this paper is to summarize the knowledge about the biological mechanisms by which omega-3 PUFAs may be protective for the retina. The content of this presentation will range from biochemical data about the occurrence of omega-3 PUFAs in retinal cell membranes to results from cellular and animal studies showing that omega-3 PUFAs can influence processes involved in signal transducti…

Lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant capacity in vitreous, aqueous humor, and blood samples from patients with diabetic retinopathy

2011

PurposeTo evaluate levels of malondialdehyde and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in the blood, aqueous humor, and vitreous bodies of diabetic and nondiabetic patients. We also measured the blood energy charge potential (ECP).MethodsWe examined 19 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and diabetic retinopathy. Ten were scheduled for cataract surgery and pars plana vitrectomy because of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). The other nine, with mild nonproliferative PDR (NPDR), and fourteen nondiabetic, age-matched subjects enrolled as a control group were scheduled for cataract surgery and vitrectomy because of epiretinal membranes. Blood, aqueous humor and vitreous body samples we…
