Affine Invariant Multivariate Sign and Rank Tests and Corresponding Estimates: a Review

1999

The paper reviews recent contributions to the statistical inference methods, tests and estimates, based on the generalized median of Oja. Multivariate analogues of sign and rank concepts, affine invariant one-sample and two-sample sign tests and rank tests, affine equivariant median and Hodges–Lehmann-type estimates are reviewed and discussed. Some comparisons are made to other generalizations. The theory is illustrated by two examples.

Influence functions and efficiencies of the canonical correlation and vector estimates based on scatter and shape matrices

2006

In this paper, the influence functions and limiting distributions of the canonical correlations and coefficients based on affine equivariant scatter matrices are developed for elliptically symmetric distributions. General formulas for limiting variances and covariances of the canonical correlations and canonical vectors based on scatter matrices are obtained. Also the use of the so-called shape matrices in canonical analysis is investigated. The scatter and shape matrices based on the affine equivariant Sign Covariance Matrix as well as the Tyler's shape matrix serve as examples. Their finite sample and limiting efficiencies are compared to those of the Minimum Covariance Determinant estima…

Genericity of dimension drop on self-affine sets

2017

We prove that generically, for a self-affine set in $\mathbb{R}^d$, removing one of the affine maps which defines the set results in a strict reduction of the Hausdorff dimension. This gives a partial positive answer to a folklore open question.

A new method for linear affine self-calibration of stationary zooming stereo cameras

2012

This paper presents a simple, yet effective, method to recover the affine structure of a scene from a (stereo) pair of stationary zooming cameras. The proposed method solely relies on point correspondences across images and no knowledge about the scene whatsoever is required. Our method exploits implicit properties of the projective camera matrices of zooming cameras and allows to estimate the affine structure of a scene by solving a linear system of equations. The 3D reconstruction results obtained by using our method, on both real and simulated data, have remarkably validated its feasibility.

Solving fully randomized first-order linear control systems: Application to study the dynamics of a damped oscillator with parametric noise under sto…

2022

[EN] This paper is devoted to study random linear control systems where the initial condition, the final target, and the elements of matrices defining the coefficients are random variables, while the control is a stochastic process. The so-called Random Variable Transformation technique is adapted to obtain closed-form expressions of the probability density functions of the solution and of the control. The theoretical findings are applied to study the dynamics of a damped oscillator subject to parametric noise.

Bézier surfaces of minimal area

2002

There are minimal surfaces admitting a Bezier form. We study the properties that the associated net of control points must satisfy. We show that in the bicubical case all minimal surfaces are, up to an affine transformation, pieces of the Enneper's surface.

Automorphisms of $mathbb{A}^{1}$-fibered affine surfaces

2011

We develop technics of birational geometry to study automorphisms of affine surfaces admitting many distinct rational fibrations, with a particular focus on the interactions between automorphisms and these fibrations. In particular, we associate to each surface S of this type a graph encoding equivalence classes of rational fibrations from which it is possible to decide for instance if the automorphism group of S is generated by automorphisms preserving these fibrations.

Design and synthesis of the first triply twisted Möbius annulene.

2014

As long as 50 years ago theoretical calculations predicted that Mobius annulenes with only one π surface and one edge would exhibit peculiar electronic properties and violate the Huckel rules. Numerous synthetic attempts notwithstanding, the first singly twisted Mobius annulene was not prepared until 2003. Here we present a general, rational strategy to synthesize triply or even more highly twisted cyclic π systems. We apply this strategy to the preparation of a triply twisted [24]dehydroannulene, the structure of which was confirmed by X-ray analysis. Our strategy is based on the topological transformation of 'twist' into 'writhe'. The advantage is twofold: the product exhibits a lower deg…
