Using historical school book excerpts for the education of mature mathematics teachers
2015
International audience; The use of historical and cultural perspectives in university mathematics education can support the development of self-esteem and maturity. It can bring together students with similar interests. We present the concept of a seminar on the analysis of mathematical textbooks and of learning contexts based on the consideration of historical excerpts. Such a seminar can become a starting point for a community of practice with the potential to develop social recognition and personal appreciation of the individual interests and talents of its members and their joint activities.

This case study investigates the role of agency in the development of two students’ expertise during their participation in the year-long KOO-KIT program (Language Technology for Language Teachers) for pre-service language teachers at the Centre for Applied Language Studies of the University of Jyväskylä in the 2000s. The curriculum of the program was organized around project-based learning, with theoretical and pedagogical lessons and hands-on technology courses alternating with practical team work in web-based design. The data consist of the teachers’ observations and narrative assessments of the students’ performance, and the students’ self-reports during the one-year course. The finding…
Pedagogical leadership to support new teachers' growth
2016
This study aims to discover the impact of pedagogical leadership on new teachers’ growth. The research is focused on three questions: 1) Are new teachers’ feelings and challenges being understood?; 2) How do new teachers receive support from principals and the school community?; and 3) How does pedagogical leadership impact new teachers’ growth? The research uses the qualitative approach of case studies. Four Finnish schools were selected as participants. The principals of each school and their five new teachers, with less than three years of experience, participated in the interviews. Teachers in Finland have common challenges when they first enter the profession. Finnish school communitie…
Debunking the myth of high achievers in Finnish primary teacher education: first-year preservice teachers’ learning strategies and study success
2022
This study aimed to explore the admitted students of Finnish primary teacher education programmes from the viewpoint of learning strategies, and academic success. An overall view was derived from national register data, which were supplemented with questionnaire data gathered from three teacher education units (N = 216). Primary teacher programmes currently seem to attract and select mediocre secondary school graduates from academic perspective, contrary to previous studies. Furthermore, women enter the programmes with higher exam scores than men and have more success in their studies. Based on their learning strategies, students were divided into subgroups of deep and independent learners,…

Constructing a pedagogical practice across disciplines in pre-service teacher education
2019
In this paper we report a qualitative case study of a teaching intervention in which a pre-service subject teacher pair planned and conducted a course integrating Finnish language and ethics in a multilingual setting. Audio-recorded planning sessions and interviews including learning diaries were analysed using qualitative content analysis to identify the dynamics of collaborative cross-curricular pedagogical practice development and pedagogical language knowledge. The analysis revealed tensions in crossing the boundary between language and content knowledge. The study suggests that when creating cross-curricular practices, student teachers benefit from longer-term processes and theory-base…
A Longitudinal Study of the Effects of Service-Learning on Physical Education Teacher Education Students
2022
Research examining Service-Learning (SL) in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) is ample. However, long-term investigations are still scarce and literature demands the application of this type of design to uncover the effects of SL on the long run. This study followed a longitudinal quantitative approach; thus, the participants completed the Civic Attitudes and Skills Questionnaire (CASQ) in three occasions (pretest-postest1-postest2). Results show that there exist significant differences between mean values of the global outcomes of the CASQ; concretely, there was an improvement in the first interval followed by a decrease in the second period. Regarding the different dimensions of…
Réécrire des textes au Cycle 3, repenser les processus d’écriture en master MEEF : une expérimentation croisée à partir de brouillons d’écrivains jeu…
2018
This paper purports to shed light on primary school teachers’ initial training in the field of creative writing, rewriting and rough draft practices. It analyses a corpus of various pieces of writing by school children and trainee teachers, collected through the implementation of a teaching unit using authors’ and children’s literature writers’ drafts and working documents with children aged 8-11 (CE2-CM) on the one hand, and with trainee teachers on the other. As part of a seminar on introduction to research, these trainee teachers thus questioned their own writing practices, their conception of rewriting and their teaching practices
Evaluation of metacognitive regulation skills in writing tasks in L1 and EFL in pre-service teachers
2020
The objective of this thesis is to diagnose the strategies of metacognitive control in writing of pre-service teachers (PSTs) in the deferred revision of two writing tasks in L1 (Spanish/Catalan) and English as a foreign language (EFL). Two exploratory studies were designed. In the first one, ninety-eight (N=98) PSTs took part they were split into higher (B2&C1) or lower (A1-B1) EFL proficiency and wrote either an essay (knowledge-transforming) or a summary (knowledge-telling) in their L1 or EFL. Texts were revised two days later so that text quality could be improved. The metacognitive control was assessed following mostly Allal's (2000) taxonomy. Each aspect of those changes or transforma…
