This paper relates an experience carried out at a higher education setting, specifically involving 3rd-year students in the Early Childhood Education degree programme. In relation to this, the paper presents an educational model that takes into account the need to develop ethical and social competences and gives importance to interdisciplinary education in real contexts. Private and professional lives among primary teachers: how they prioritize? Being a teacher in primary school seems far from allowing the articulation of work and private life in such a comfortable manner as seen in collective beliefs. In order to deconstruct the belief considering teachers as privileged, this contribution proposes, based on empirical results (an online survey with 21,642 responses), to report, first, how primary teachers prioritize their private or professional lives. The garden is a major educational resource that can be used for all areas of knowledge from an interdisciplinary perspective as it reflects the complexity and interactions of the natural environment. Goal of the research is to analyse how students currently succeed in using basic skills acquired in mathematics, in science and real-life contexts, before new reforms in Latvia for the development of students' competence have been started. Only about 20% of students in the national testing for 9th grade were able to do it. The research analysed students’ papers, results, and study aids, as well as teacher performance in lessons.
