Il cinquantennio che va dalla Guerra franco-prussiana alla conclusione della Grande guerra e all'avvento del fascismo in Italia contrassegnano una fase nuova nel costituirsi dell'ideologia della nazione e del carattere dei popoli. Il volume raccoglie saggi che documentano, discutono e problematizzano la funzione della produzione artistica e culturale e dei dispositivi a essa connessi, nella costruzione e nel consolidamento di quelle ideologie e di quei sentimenti nazionalistici e xenofobi che, se non sono stati causa diretta della guerra, hanno creato consenso nell'opinione pubblica.

The essay proposes an excursus through German-speaking culture between 1400 and 1650, aiming to highlight how the reading of 'signs',both artificial and natural, underwent substantial changes inthe perios under examination. In optimistic anthropological contexts, the reading is mainly the result of a widespread aspiration to knowledge and does not excude the free will of human beings. When a pessimistic conception dominates, the sign is the external manifestation of an ineluctable destiny.

Il saggio analizza il romanzo di Johann Gottfried Schnabel 'Der Cavalier' del 1738, che racconta le avventure amorose di un giovane tedesco inviato in Italia dal padre per un 'viaggio di formazione'. Tema centrale del lavoro è l'immagine che dell'Italia si ha nei paesi di lingua tedesca a cavallo fra Seicento e Settecent, ma anche la concezione pedagogicao per la gioventù della media e piccola nobiltà, così come per i ceti borghesi più abbienti e intellettuali.

The article reconstructs the history of the Italian retranslation of Thomas Mann’s "Joseph und seine Brüder". Although Mondadori already published the work (four volumes from 1933 to 1948), shortly after the death of the first translator, the retranslation of the entire tetralogy was commissioned. Based on the letters between the publisher, the author and the new translator, the paper tries to shed light on an unusual case of retranslation, where the rules that generally determine its necessity do not seem to be applicable.
