The essay reconstructs the path of re-appropriation of Arnold Schoenberg's Jewish identity, referring - in particular - to the events that led to the conversion to Judaism, to the political writings of 1933-38, to the correspondence with Thomas Mann during the exile in the United States and the genesis …

L’esilio al femminile. Neue Frauen oltreoceano
2020
The essay offers an overview of the experience of exile of a group of German and Austrian female writers (Adrienne Thomas, Irmgard Keun, Victoria Wolff, Gina Kaus and Vicki Baum), who had been a symbol of the so–called Neue Frau in the Twenties and emigrated after the rise of National Socialism. From an autobiographical point of view the reconstruction of their experience of exile, which sometimes include common stations (Vienna, Paris, the crossing of the Atlantic, Hollywood and, in some cases, the return to Europe), allows to compare their careers and to find out breaks and possible lines of continuity in the process of their literary affirmation and social emancipation which had begun in…
2022
The paper proposes an analysis of the reception of Nietzsche’s Die Geburt der Tragödie in Thomas Mann, with particular attention to the essay (1947) dedicated to the philosopher and to Doktor Faustus. The novel is read as an example of productive reception: Nietzsche’s categories of Apollonian and Dionysian, and even more so the idea of a rebirth of the great tragic art, become narrative cues that animate the entire story. The Doktor Faustus does not limit itself to parodying particular concepts of the Birth of Tragedy, but ends up presenting itself as a captivating ‘instruction manual’ for a correct reading of Nietzsche’s work.

„Kantor Chrystusa eucharystycznego” – św. Tomasz z Akwinu w przepowiadaniu do dzieci z okazji uroczystości Pierwszej Komunii Świętej
2021

Travel and Disease in Thomas Mann’s "Death in Venice"
2019
Thomas Mann’s novella, Death in Venice (Der Tod in Venedig, 1912), presents a story of an artist, Gustav von Aschenbach, suffering from the writer’s block who travels to Venice to look for inspiration and where he eventually finds his death. In the meantime, he suffers from depression strengthened by feats of febrile listlessness, pressure in the temples, heaviness of the eyelids that make discontent befall him. The putrid smell of the lagoon hastens his departure, but a strange coincidence makes him change his mind. He returns to the hotel drawn by the enthrallment for the young lad, Tadzio, he had spotted there. Wandering through the streets of Venice, he ignores the health notices in the…
Bene vivere politice
2022
Abstract This chapter approaches the question of biopolitics in ancient political thought looking not at specific political techniques but at notions of the final aim of the political community. It argues that the “happiness” (eudaimonia, beatitudo) that constitutes the greatest human good in the tradition from Aristotle to Thomas Aquinas is not a “biopolitical” ideal, but rather a metabiopolitical one, consisting in a contemplative activity situated above and beyond the biological and the political. It is only with Thomas Hobbes that civic happiness becomes “biopolitically” identified with simple survival; for modernity, as Hannah Arendt puts it, mere being alive becomes the greatest human…
