Wie adaptiv ist Sprachförderung für Kinder mit Deutsch als Zweitsprache?
2021
Abstract This paper focuses on the definition, operationalization and empirical investigation of adaptivity in the context of language training. We discuss a study that aimed at answering the question whether kindergarten teachers adapt their language to the specific needs of children with German as a second language in language training situations. Specifically, we investigated whether teachers use subordinate clauses and specific language training techniques to present or elicit subordinate clauses more frequently when working with children who had not yet acquired subordinate clauses than teachers supporting children who already had. Fifteen teachers were videotaped during language suppo…
The role of implicit theories in the non-expert translation process
2014
Research into the role of implicit theories in decision-making covers a broad area ranging from personal to political relationships, and from private to professional life. To date, translation studies have paid little attention to the influence of translators’ knowledge and beliefs in the translation process, and even less to the role of implicit theories. In a pilot study with translation trainees, we attempted to reconstruct their theories about translation and discern to what extent these theories influence both the translation process and the translated text. Our results so far show that trainees do entertain initial implicit theories, which can be modified through experience and formal…
Exploring the cross-linguistic transfer of reading skills in Spanish to English in the context of a computer adaptive reading intervention
2017
ABSTRACTWe explore the potential of a computer-adaptive decoding game in Spanish to increase the decoding skills and oral reading fluency in Spanish and English of bilingual students. Participants were 78 first-grade Spanish-speaking students attending bilingual programs in five classrooms in Texas. Classrooms were randomly assigned to the treatment (i.e., where students played Graphogame Spanish) for 16 weeks for ten minutes per day (n = 3) versus business as usual instruction (n = 2). Results indicate that students at some risk on Spanish pseudoword reading appeared to benefit the most from playing the game. Analysis of gains suggests a potentially small, but meaningful educational effect…
Authentic Audiovisual Resources to Actualise Legal Interpreting Education
2015
New Zealand Aotearoa is an English-medium country and a home to a high number of minority migrant groups speaking over 160 different languages. To cater to the needs of such a diverse population, the Interpreting and Translation Team at Auckland University of Technology has developed a language-neutral pedagogy using a range of innovative teaching methods. One method is the use of authentic audiovisual material incorporating extracts from murder trials to raise awareness of courtroom discourse in general, and lawyers’ questions in particular. The aim of this study was to ascertain to what extent audiovisual clips are beneficial in legal interpreter education. After viewing audiovisual clips…
Towards more learning-centred English-medium education: promoting the combination of backward design and community of practice in teacher training
2022
Purpose Teaching in English-medium education (EME) requires mastery of content and ability to teach in a multilingual setting, but also pedagogical expertise and didactic agility. However, there is an apparent lack of proper training of EME teachers, who are typically experts of their field, but not necessarily equipped to design and implement EME. Moreover, there is still an evident gap with respect to understanding how EME teachers turn curricula into actual teaching and students’ learning. By addressing this gap, the present study provides recommendations for EME teacher training. Approach Finland, with its long EME traditions, was the present study’s context. Data saturation, i.e. adequ…
La interpretación judicial en España en un momento de cambio.
2015
The publication in the European Union of Directive 2010/64/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 October 2010 on the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings has been a turning point in a great number of aspects related to court and police interpretation. The main objective of the Directive is to ensure quality legal interpretation throughout the process, as part of the right to defense and to a fair trial. Spain, as a Member State of the EU, has the obligation to transpose this European Directive into its domestic law. Therefore, this is a historic moment in which two main factors converge: the need to change the legislation to bring it in line with …
Factors determining the efficiency of logopaedic care of children in Poland.
2000
The purpose of this article is to establish factors which determine the efficiency of the system of care provided to children with speech disorders attending regular schools and kindergartens. The analysis was made using Poland as an example, which, similar to other countries, has made some achievements in this matter. Although Poland has had an institutionalised care system for children with speech development anomalies for 30 years, the problem of speech disorders is still very difficult to solve. Due to the large scale of the phenomenon among Polish children, this problem can be defined as a social problem in this country. The above-described situation makes it necessary to search for me…
Trade apprenticeships, schooling and social differentiation in the merchant sector in fourteenth century Valencia
2020
An overview of the Italian contribution to the international multisite SPRISTAD study on psychotherapy training
2019
The Interest Section on Therapist Training and Development of the Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPRISTAD) has launched a multisite collaborative longitudinal study of psychotherapy trainees’ development, a large-scale study involving a number of countries all over the world. In the present article, we present an overview of the early Italian contribution to the SPRISTAD study, based on preliminary paper-and-pencil data collection. Our preliminary findings showed cross-sectional differences at different years of training and two-years longitudinal changes in trainees’ perceived development. Moreover, trainees’ characteristics such as their motivation, relational manner, current life, a…
The development and alignment of pedagogical conceptions of health education
2015
Abstract This study examined the development and alignment of conceptions of health education as a subject, and of its teaching and learning, among Finnish health education student teachers (n = 20). Longitudinal phenomenographic data (essays, interviews) were collected at two time points during health education studies, and at one time point after the participants had gained 1–3 years of work experience. The proportion of participants expressing the most sophisticated pedagogical conceptions decreased during teacher training, but increased after the gaining of work experience. Moreover, fewer than half of the participants expressed pedagogical conceptions that advanced in broad alignment w…
