Dissecting the factors controlling seed development in the model legume Medicago truncatula

2012

Legumes are not only indispensible for sustainable agriculture but are also a rich source of protein in food and feed for humans and animals, respectively. However, major proteins stored in legume seeds are poor in sulfur-containing amino acids, and may be accompanied by anti-nutritional factors causing low protein digestibility problems. In this regard, Medicago truncatula serves as a model legume to study legume seed development especially the phase of seed storage protein accumulation. As developing legume seeds are complex structures, a thorough knowledge of the morphogenesis of the seed and the characterization of regulatory mechanisms underlying the embryo development and seed filling…

Molte Palermo. Temi

2019

In the theme of unfinished ideas of possible cities will recognize the connotative paradigm of the evolution of Palermo will be recognised along a thousand year path of transformational processes none of which was completed by virtue of the distinctive value of exemplum that does not require additional and conclusive demonstrations. The course of history has moreover imposed on Palermo a cyclical recurrence of broken destinies. This was evidence of the invention of the capital city that of the “geometric square and the cross roads” superimposed on the archetypal underpinning of Pan-ormos as a place of exchange. And incompleteness will be the hallmark of the city of the nineteenth century straight roads heading towards undefined destinations the symptomatic expression of the idea of a preordained effect of suspension. Similarly unfinished will be the Palermo of the redevelopment plans in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries upto the shapeless development of the contemporary city and the new arterial routes (the Circonvallazione) manifestations of further “Palermo as abstraction” ever more distant from “Palermo as places”. A city ultimately characterized by continuous metamorphoses replacement of values absorptions oblivion and cultural desecration. From this distance one can indeed observe Palermo from a marginal and peripherical point of view as regards its urban limits opening up a different prospect penetrating and maybe even superior able to understand facts and phenomena in depth.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana

Fast equivariant JADE

2013

Independent component analysis (ICA) is a widely used signal processing tool having applications in various fields of science. In this paper we focus on affine equivariant ICA methods. Two such well-established estimation methods, FOBI and JADE, diagonalize certain fourth order cumulant matrices to extract the independent components. FOBI uses one cumulant matrix only, and is therefore computationally very fast. However, it is not able to separate identically distributed components which is a major drawback. JADE overcomes this restriction. Unfortunately, JADE uses a huge number of cumulant matrices and is computationally very heavy in high-dimensional cases. In this paper, we hybridize the…

Stability Analysis and Stabilization of T-S Fuzzy Delta Operator Systems with Time-Varying Delay via an Input-Output Approach

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/913234 Open Access The stability analysis and stabilization of Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy delta operator systems with time-varying delay are investigated via an input-output approach. A model transformation method is employed to approximate the time-varying delay. The original system is transformed into a feedback interconnection form which has a forward subsystem with constant delays and a feedback one with uncertainties. By applying the scaled small gain (SSG) theorem to deal with this new system, and based on a Lyapunov Krasovskii funct…

A new lattice action for studying topological charge

1996

We propose a new lattice action for non-abelian gauge theories, which will reduce short-range lattice artifacts in the computation of the topological susceptibility. The standard Wilson action is replaced by the Wilson action of a gauge covariant interpolation of the original fields to a finer lattice. If the latter is fine enough, the action of all configurations with non-zero topological charge will satisfy the continuum bound. As a simpler example we consider the $O(3)$ $\sigma$-model in two dimensions, where a numerical analysis of discretized continuum instantons indicates that a finer lattice with half the lattice spacing of the original is enough to satisfy the continuum bound.

Rationally integrable vector fields and rational additive group actions

2016

International audience; We characterize rational actions of the additive group on algebraic varieties defined over a field of characteristic zero in terms of a suitable integrability property of their associated velocity vector fields. This extends the classical correspondence between regular actions of the additive group on affine algebraic varieties and the so-called locally nilpotent derivations of their coordinate rings. Our results lead in particular to a complete characterization of regular additive group actions on semi-affine varieties in terms of their associated vector fields. Among other applications, we review properties of the rational counterpart of the Makar-Limanov invariant…

An extended Darboux transformation to get families of solutions to the KPI equation

2023

By means of a Darboux transform with particular generating function solutions to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation (KPI) are constructed. We give a method that provides different types of solutions in terms of particular determinants of order N. For any order, these solutions depend of the degree of summation and the degree of derivation of the generating functions. We study the patterns of their modulus in the plane (x, y) and their evolution according time and parameters.

Do nonmelanoma skin cancers develop from extra-cutaneous stem cells?

2008

A hypothesis is presented that nonmelanoma skin cancers can develop from extra-cutaneous stem cells, and not exclusively from skin keratinocytes. This idea is supported by recent findings regarding the initiation of cancers in the digestive tract, and by a cancer stem cell model of a neoplasia. It is known that multipotent adult progenitor cells can trans-differentiate into very diverse cellular lineages and can be recruited to areas of profound tissue injury. In these settings, they might also initiate malignant transformation. Some epidemiological data and recent findings regarding mechanisms of wound healing indicate that skin cancers could also originate from bone marrow-derived or othe…

Rottlerin induces a transformed phenotype in human keratinocytes.

2001

PKCdelta plays a fundamental role in cell cycle control. Consistent with its proposed tumour suppressor function, ras transfection of the human keratinocyte cell line HaCaT results in a loss of PKCdelta expression mediated by TGFalpha (Exp. Cell Res., 219, 299, 1995). To get more insight into the role of PKCdelta in keratinocytes, we investigated the effects of Rottlerin, a specific inhibitor of protein kinase Cdelta, in HaCaT cells. After Rottlerin treatment, HaCaT cells lost their cobble-stone morphology and displayed a spindle-shaped, fibroblastic phenotype. Additionally, the establishment of cell-cell contacts was prevented. This was caused by an internalization of E-cadherin and beta-c…

How Digital is Communication in Your Organization?

2006

Novel innovations in the area of digital media are changing the ways we communicate and organize. However, few practical measures exist for analysing the digitalisation of organizational communication as an intermediate factor in the initiatives to adopt new information and communication technologies (ICT). Building upon the genre theory of organizational communication, a categorization of communication forms, and quantitative measures we suggest such metrics and a measurement method. A case study applying them in an industrial organization suggests the method and metrics to be applicable for quantifying how new information systems affect to organizational communication as well as for antic…
