Indirect Sexism in John Grisham’s Sycamore Row (2013): Unveiling Sexual Inequality Through a Gender-Committed Pedagogy in the Translation Classroom
2019
In the ongoing fight for sexual equality, discourse and translation are key mechanisms, that deserve careful scrutiny. This chapter describes a teaching experience within my Legal Translation (English–Spanish) module at the University of Valencia. Students were required to translate some passages from Sycamore Row (2013), a best-selling legal thriller by John Grisham. In class, we analyzed and discussed these passages and compared them with the students’ translations as well as with the 2014commercial Spanish version, entitled La herencia. Sexist and/or patronizing comments are common in this book, disguised under the veil of irony or humour. Thus, John Grisham manages—through humour and ir…
Joint Drafting of Legal Provisions in Multilingual Systems: an Analysis of the Swiss COVID-19 Regulations from a Legal Linguistic and Translational P…
2020
International audience; Legal language is known for its various technicalities and subtleties that often insulate legal translation from other specialized fields. In addition to the mere linguistic transfer of the text, along with the lexical, syntactical and pragmatic features specifically inherent in a Language for Legal Purpose (cf. Cao 2007), a comparison of two different legal systems becomes imperative in most cases (cf. Sandrini 1999). Even in light of the current pandemic that has forced governments to quickly lay down measures aimed at containing the spread of the virus, fundamental legal principles continue to apply. One might argue that a rapidly spreading virus can affect legisla…
Frame-Semantics meets Multilingual Legal Terminology. Theoretical Principles Based on a German-French Case Study
2021
International audience; Terminology aims primarily at elaborating standardized notions for the various complex concepts within specialized fields, intending to separate clearly defined technical terms from general lexical units that are used in every-day situations, with yet a wide range of vocabulary, that is specialized to some extent but cannot be delimited by terminological standards, emerging in between (ten Hacken 2010, 2015). For legal experts, for instance, the elaboration of precisely determined legal terms contributes to an overall specific understanding of legal concepts regardless of the possible ambiguities the same term may have in a general setting. At the same time, a variet…
Plausibilitat d?un ancestre comú entre les obres mitològiques de Joan Roís de Corella i les Transformacions de Francesc Alegre
2020
Between the Transformacions of Francesc Alegre (c.1452 - c.1508) and the mythological proses of Joan Roís de Corella some textual coincidences have been detected. Not without reservations, these coincidences have been explained as Corellas influence on Alegre. This is the most satisfactory explanation, given Alegre’s admiration and imitation of Corella’s prose, and Corella’s huge fame in the second half of the fifteenth century. However, Alegre knew earlier versions of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, such as that by Francesc de Pinós (1416-1475), or the anonymous Castilian version, both nowadays lost. And perhaps these versions were known by Corella too. The textual coincidences of these two authors …
Lexicographical treatment of some forestry terms in "De la siembra y plantíos de árboles" (1773) by Casimiro Gómez Ortega.
2020
The absence of comprehensive treatises on forestry in 18th …
Is translation an autopoietic system?
2010
Translation is analyzed from the standpoint of its systemic properties. Translation is shown to have the capacity to observe itself and its difference from the environment. Observation being a major autopoietic factor, translation may be considered as an autopoietic system. Doubts about this hypothesis arise because of the peculiarities of communicative properties of translation. Translation plays the role of the mediating party in complex translation communication events and its communicative behavior is ‘defective’ in that translation does not act upon source messages because its communicative function is passing messages on to the target party. As a system, translation may be studied aga…
Des Translators neue Kleider. Die Translationwirtschaft in Zeiten von Digitalisierung, Datafizierung und Big Data Management
2017
Abstract The Internet of things will influence all professional environments, including translation services. Advances in machine learning, supported by accelerating improvements in computer linguistics, have enabled new systems that can learn from their own experience and will have repercussions on the workflow processes of translators or even put their services at risk in the expected digitalized society. Outsourcing has become a common practice and working in the cloud and in the crowd tend to enable translating on a very low-cost level. Confronted with promising new labels like Industry 4.0 and Work 4.0, professional freelance translators will have to organize themselves as smart office…
Towards a multidisciplinary approach in creative subtitling
2012
Standard subtitling practices have long been influenced, if not governed, by norms and conventions such as the Code of Good Subtitling Practice (Ivarsson & Carroll 1998). Yet recent research into film subtitling has begun to take a creative turn: a trend that is matched by increasing numbers of fansubs and professionally produced creative subtitles. This paper seeks to demonstrate the need for a multidisciplinary approach to creative subtitling and, by drawing upon principles from film studies, suggests some key features for the development of a creative subtitling practice.
A dialectal reading of the History of Translation
2013
