The measurement of seasonality for tourism evaluation
2017
Seasonal variations in tourism demand represent one of the most challenging topics in tourism research. After highlighting the main pitfalls which characterize the majority of currently used indices for seasonal amplitude, the present work propose the implementation of a recently discusses a recently proposed index for the measurement of seasonality in tourism, based on the transportation problem approach. An adequate measurement of seasonality is a pre-requisite for the evaluation of the effectiveness of tourism policies aimed at reducing tourism demand imbalance.
Smart Wireless Sensor Networks and Biometric Authentication for Real Time Traffic Light Junctions Management
2013
The main challenge of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) is to deal with ‘real-time’ information to improve vehicular traffic management. Road data can be processed and used for dynamic traffic light management in order to reduce waiting times in queues. This paper proposes an innovative distributed architecture based on a wireless sensor network (WSN) with a network coordinator providing remote and ubiquitous authentication module for managing unexpected events. The architecture is completed by a dynamic module for street priority management depending on traffic rate. Many experimental trials have been carried out considering three different levels of traffic intensity to prove the e…
Optimisation through offshore – between reality and legality
2021
The study highlights the complete image of the characteristics regarding offshore areas, by taking into account the perspective to deploy new measures of fiscal transparency. The importance of such areas stems from the fact that world economies lose important sums of money, every year by default of taxes. This happens as a consequence of corporative international abuse of fiscal evasion and the relocation of the profit made by big companies. The sums resulted from erosion of national taxation bases, from fiscal evasion and fraud and other infringements connected with fiscal evasion (are often being transferred to offshore companies so that their illegal characteristics gets lost and after t…
Analiza przestrzennego zróżnicowania zmian w potencjale infrastruktury transportowej w Polsce
2015
Hewingsa. Przedstawia on przestrzennie zmodyfikowane stopy wzrostu (tempa zmian) poszczególnych wariantów zjawiska przez uwzględnienie temp wzrostu zjawiska w obszarach sąsiadujących. Celem artykułu jest analiza zmian struktury infrastruktury transportowej w województwach Polski w latach 2004 oraz 2014, według rodzajów infrastruktury transportowej z zastosowaniem przestrzennej dynamicznej metody przesunięć udziałów. W opracowaniu dokonano oceny tempa wzr…
LCA of Different Construction Choices for a Double-Track Railway Line for Sustainability Evaluations
2023
The international commitment to achieve carbon neutrality in the next few decades has oriented human activities towards the preservation of natural and non-renewable resources. In this context, a great research effort has been devoted to the search for sustainable solutions for the infrastructure construction sector, based on a thorough assessment of the environmental impact (EI). In this regards, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is considered one of the main components of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and, for a comprehensive analysis, all the costs incurred by stakeholders during the useful life of the infrastructure should also be taken into account, applying the Life Cycle Cost (LCC)…
Key challenges facing the European transport labour market
2016
The importance of transport for human development is rather unchallenged. Transport is fundamental for the functioning of markets in general, and the labour market in particular, including the labour it needs for its own functioning. The aim of this article is to identify and assess key challenges in the labour market in the transport sector in the European Union, and present some disputable issues related to activities aiming at dealing with these challenges. First, the direct and indirect importance of transport for the European labour market is discussed. Then, the key challenges in the European labour market are identified. Finally, some potential directions of development and their pos…
Impacts des réseaux viaires sur les mobilités urbaines : quelques illustrations
2008
This research aims to find the impact of the network shape and structure on the urban mobilities, in order to fight against the automobile dependency and to include the externalities in the network design. Three examples illustrate this objective. The first one shows the influence of the network shape on the pedestrian urban flows. The second one emphasizes how sensitive to the network structure is the efficiency of a very flexible Demand Responsive Transport. The third example demonstrates that the network metric is favourable to the automobile and how it can be possible to apply an alternative metric, called the “slow metric” to reduce the urban sprawling and the automobile dependency.
A two-phase insertion technique of unexpected customers for a dynamic dial-a-ride problem
2006
Abstract This work deals with a dynamic dial-a-ride problem with time window constraints. In particular, new unplanned requests for service may arise at a vehicle stop and the driver must decide in real-time whether to accept or reject them. For this problem, we have developed a two-phase insertion algorithm based on route perturbations: the first phase, which is run off-line when the vehicle moves between two successive stops, aims at creating a feasible neighborhood of the current route; while the second phase, which is run in real-time every time a new request occurs, inserts, when possible, the delivery stop of the new customer in the current route.
Minimizing fleet operating costs for a container transportation company
2006
Abstract This paper focuses on a fleet management problem that arises in container trucking industry. From the container transportation company perspective, the present and future operating costs to minimize can be divided in three components: the routing costs, the resource (i.e., driver and truck) assignment costs and the container repositioning costs (i.e., the costs of restoring a given container fleet distribution over the serviced territory, as requested by the shippers that own the containers). This real-world problem has been modeled as an integer programming problem. The proposed solution approach is based on the decomposition of this problem in three simpler sub-problems associate…
Pārrobežu ceļu satiksmes negadījumiem piemērojamais likums
2017
