The derivatization of amphetamine and methamphetamine with 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate (NQS) into solid-phase extraction cartridges (C 18 ) is described. Optimum conditions were the use of carbonate–hydrogencarbonate buffer of pH 10, a 10 min reaction time at 25 °C and an NQS concentration of 9.6 × 10 - 3 M. The accuracy and the precision of the method were tested. The results obtained with the proposed liquid–solid procedure were compared with those obtained with a traditional liquid–liquid extraction with hexane–ethyl acetate. Abstract Logarithm of retention factors (log k ) of a group of 14 ionizable diuretics were correlated with the molecular (log P o/w ) and apparent (log P app ) octanol–water partition coefficients. The compounds were chromatographed using aqueous–organic (reversed-phase liquid chromatography, RPLC) and micellar–organic mobile phases (micellar liquid chromatography, MLC) with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), in the pH range 3–7, and a conventional octadecylsilane column. A photoemission electron microscope based on a new contrast mechanism "interference contrast" is applied to characterize extreme ultraviolet lithography mask blank defects. Inspection results show that positioning of interference destructive condition (node of standing wave field) on surface of multilayer in the local region of a phase defect is necessary to obtain best visibility of the defect on mask blank. SIGNIFICANCE We have analyzed the ultraviolet transmittance of some commercial intraocular lenses (IOLs). The results show differences of wavelength cutoff among them. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the ultraviolet light transmittance of different IOLs made out of acrylic hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and hydrophilic with hydrophobic surface materials from different manufacturers. Previous work has indicated that the turnover of chloroplast ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco; EC 4.1.1. 39) may be controlled by the redox state of certain cysteine residues. To test this hypothesis, directed mutagenesis and chloroplast transformation were employed to create a C172S substitution in the Rubisco large subunit of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The C172S mutant strain was not substantially different from the wild type with respect to growth rate, and the purified mutant enzyme had a normal circular dichroism spectrum. Interactions of benzodiazepines with human serum albumin. Circular dichroism studies.

The circular dichroism spectra of 12 benzodiazepine derivatives studied in presence of human serum albumin are presented. Nearly all substances give biphasic extrinsic Cotton effects. At the CD maxima the molar ellipticities and the anisotropy factors are calculated. The influence of the chemical structure of the benzodiazepines on the induced Cotton effect is discussed. There is a linear correlation between the anisotropy factors and the logarithms of the partition coefficients of the substances. It is suggested that the phenyl ring of the benzodiazepine molecule is one of the essential groups for the binding of these substances to human serum albumin.
Isolation and identification of the antibacterial compounds from Helichrysum stoechas.

Fractionation of the dicholoromethane extract of the aerial parts of Helichrysum stoechas yielded seven isolates (1-7), which exhibited varying antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Pure compounds 1-3 have been previously reported in the same species and 4 and 5 were identified as italipyrone and plicatipyrone, previously isolated from H. italicum and H. plicatum. The two other isolates are helipyrone (6) and homoarenol (7) mixed with related substances. Compound 6c (4,4'-dihydroxy-5,6,5',6'-tetramethyl-3,3'-methylen-di-pyr-2-one) and 6b helipyrone with one methyl substitution, have not been previously reported in other species.
Modification of Structural and Luminescence Properties of Graphene Quantum Dots by Gamma Irradiation and Their Application in a Photodynamic Therapy

Herein, the ability of gamma irradiation to enhance the photoluminescence properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) was investigated. Different doses of gamma-irradiation were used on GQDs to examine the way in which their structure and optical properties can be affected. The photoluminescence quantum yield was increased six times for the GQDs irradiated with high doses compared to the nonirradiated material. Both photoluminescence lifetime and values of optical band gap were increased with the dose of applied gamma irradiation. The esterification of fatty alcohol ethoxylates (FAEs) by melting with maleic anhydride has been studied in the presence of urea. The reaction rate and yield of non-ethoxylated and ethoxylated alcohols increase largely when grinded urea is suspended in the reaction medium, a 100% yield being achieved at 80 degrees C in 15 min. The procedure is tolerant to the presence of large amounts of water. In this paper we introduce a new diagnostic technique that uses prominence EUV and UV absorption to determine the prominence plasma electron temperature and column emission measure, as well as He/H relative abundance; if a realistic assumption on the geometry of the absorbing plasma can be made, this technique can also yield the absorbing plasma electron density. This technique capitalizes on the absorption properties of Hydrogen and Helium at different wavelength ranges and temperature regimes.
