Systemic Inflammatory Markers and Oncologic Outcomes in Patients with High-risk Non-muscle-invasive Urothelial Bladder Cancer

2018

Background: Serum levels of neutrophils, platelets, and lymphocytes have been recognized as factors related to poor prognosis for many solid tumors, including bladder cancer (BC). Objective: To evaluate the prognostic role of the combination of the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR) in patients with high-risk non–muscle-invasive urothelial BC (NIMBC). Design, setting, and participants: A total of 1151 NMIBC patients who underwent first transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT) at 13 academic institutions between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2012 were included in this analysis. The median follow-up was 48 mo.…

Angiotensin II, type 2 receptor in the development of vesico-ureteric reflux

2001

Objective To investigate if mutation of the angiotensin II (Ang II) receptors AT2 is involved in primary vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR) in humans. Patients and methods Genetic polymorphisms in the AT1 and AT2 receptors was evaluated in 23 patients having the most common congenital urological abnormality, namely primary congenital VUR. The occurrence of the A1166C transition in the AT1 receptor gene and the A-1332G transition in the AT2 receptor gene were evaluated and compared with the incidence in normal controls with no urological abnormalities. Result The distribution of the AT1 receptor genotypes was no different between patients with VUR and healthy controls. Furthermore, 10 of 23 (44%) …

Sarcomatoid carcinoma of urinary bladder: Immunohistochemical study of an uncommon case

2002

A case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the bladder is reported herein. Immunohistochemical staining with human pancytokeratin antibody was negative, while vimentin staining was strongly positive, suggesting a diagnosis of sarcoma of the bladder. Further immunohistochemical analysis revealed positivity for AE1/AE3 cytokeratins, permitting a correct diagnosis of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the bladder. It can be difficult to distinguish between sarcomatoid carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma and sarcoma, particularly if the biopsy specimens are of small size. In rare cases, sarcomatoid tumors may express epithelial markers different from those revealed by human pancytokeratin staining. Copyright ©…

Validation of Fenoterol to Study β2-Adrenoceptor Function in the Rat Urinary Bladder

2021

Fenoterol is a β2-adrenoceptor (AR)-selective agonist that is commonly used to investigate relaxation responses mediated by β2-AR in smooth muscle preparations. Some data have questioned this because fenoterol had low potency in the rat urinary bladder when a muscarinic agonist was used as a pre-contraction agent and because some investigators proposed that fenoterol may act in part via β3-AR. We designed the present study to investigate whether fenoterol is a proper pharmacological tool to study β2-AR-mediated relaxation responses in the rat urinary bladder. Firstly, we have compared the effect of p…

Alpha-adrenergic drugs in retrograde ejaculation.

1974

6 men with complete or partial loss of ejaculation as a result of retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy (performed because of testicular tumor) were treated with an intravenous injection of 60 mg synephrine. Synephrine stimulates adrenergic alpha-receptors. Only 1 man with sustained retrograde ejaculation improved following treatment showing antegrade ejaculation. This temporary restoration of fertility was thought to be due to an increase in bladder neck tone and prevention of backflow of semen into the bladder as a result of stimulation of adrenergic alpha-receptors.

Comparison between Two Different Two-Stage Transperineal Approaches to Treat Urethral Strictures or Bladder Neck Contracture Associated with Severe U…

2012

Introduction. The recurrence of urethral/bladder neck stricture after multiple endoscopic procedures is a rare complication that can follow prostatic surgery and its treatment is still controversial.Material and Methods. We retrospectively analyzed our data on 17 patients, operated between September 2001 and January 2010, who presented severe urinary incontinence and urethral/bladder neck stricture after prostatic surgery and failure of at least four conservative endoscopic treatments. Six patients underwent a transperineal urethrovesical anastomosis and 11 patients a combined transperineal suprapubical (endoscopic) urethrovesical anastomosis. After six months the patients that presented comp…

Urinary diversion in bladder exstrophy and incontinent epispadias: 25 years of experience.

1995

To determine the optimal surgical approach in achieving complete urinary continence with preservation of the upper urinary tract in the exstrophy-epispadias complex we reviewed the records of patients treated at our institution. From 1968 to July 1994, 115 patients with bladder exstrophy/incontinent epispadias were treated of whom followup was available for 104 and 2 died of causes unrelated to urinary diversion. Mean followup is 16.7 years. In 43 of the 102 patients surgery was primarily performed at our institution (urinary diversion in 39, a modified Young-Dees procedure in 1 and sling plasty in 3). In another 59 patients urinary diversion was done secondarily after therapy elsewhere (bla…

Intravesical Treatment of Superficial Urinary Bladder Tumours with Adriamycin

1980

Personal experience resulted in the observation that intravesical Adriamycin (ADM) is effective in some patients with multiple or diffuse papillary bladder tumours. A review of the literature shows that similar results have been obtained elsewhere, especially in Japan and Sweden. The response rate was higher if single doses of at least 50 mg were employed. Intravesical instillations of ADM appear to be valuable also in the treatment of carcinoma in situ and in prophylactic treatment after transurethral resection (TUR) of papillary bladder tumours.

Surgical Anatomy for Radical Prostatectomy

2007

Exact neuroanatomical knowledge of the male and female pelvis has become increasingly important to both anatomists and pelvic surgeons (bowel surgery, urology, gynaecology). Anatomical discoveries are often the basis for the development of new operating methods. In addition, functional results after operative procedures have become the target of detailed anatomical scrutiny.
