Remotely controlled aerial and underwater vehicles in support to magnetic surveys

2019

This article deals with the creation of a professional magnetometer, a flexible, light and compact instrument that can be installed on aerial and marine drones. The instrument can accurately measure the local magnetic field. Subsequently, it was installed on AUV and a micro ROV to test its effectiveness for archaeological purposes and magnetic surveys. Experimental data show that both systems can be used by filtering disturbances from vehicles.

Global Efficiency of Power-Split Hybrid Electric Powertrain

2021

The development of a proper energy management strategy in hybrid electric vehicles is crucial to pursue the best balance between emissions reduction and performance. In this respect, this paper addresses a straightforward method to investigate the behaviour of the hybrid powertrain in steady-state operation in terms of speeds and torques both of the thermal engine and the electric machines. The procedure takes into account the conversion power losses in the internal combustion engine and the electric unit and the mechanical power losses occurring in the power-split transmission. This enables the calculation of a set of maps describing the global efficiency of the hybrid powertrain and the p…

UAV Communication Strategies in the Next Generation of Mobile Networks

2020

| openaire: EC/H2020/857031/EU//5G!Drones The Next Generation of Mobile Networks (NGMN) alliance advocates the use of different means to support vehicular communications. This aims to cope with the massive data generated by these devices which could affect the Quality of Service (QoS) of the associated applications, but also the overall operation carried out by the vehicles. However, efficient communication strategies must be considered in order to select, for each vehicle, the communication mean ensuring the best QoS. In this paper, we tackle this issue and we propose efficient communication strategies for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). In addition to direct UAV-to-Infrastructure communi…

A Study of the Simulated Evolution of the Spectral Sensitivity of Visual Agent Receptors

2001

In this article we study a model for the evolution of the spectral sensitivity of visual receptors for agents in a continuous virtual environment. The model uses a genetic algorithm (GA) to evolve the agent sensors along with the control of the agents by requiring the agents to solve certain tasks in the simulation environment. The properties of the evolved sensors are analyzed for different scenarios. In particular, it is shown that the GA is able to find a balance between sensor costs and agent performance in such a way that the spectral sensor sensitivity reflects the emission spectrum of the target objects and that the capability of the sensors to evolve can help the agents significantl…

The collaborative consistent vehicle routing problem with workload balance

2021

Abstract The rising competition in the logistics sector forces companies to be more economically efficient. One of the major sources of inefficiency is the incomplete usage of available resources, such as vehicles’ capacities. Mechanism that allow to better exploit such resources by enabling carrier collaborations are on the rise. Our study examines a centrally organized multi-period collaborative vehicle routing problem, where carriers can exchange customers who have to be serviced on a regular basis. Collaborations, where carriers serve frequent customers, are supposed to face the problem of (i) time consistency in terms of visiting time, and of (ii) service consistency. The latter ensure…

EV-planning: Electric vehicle itinerary planning

2014

International audience; In the latest few years, lot of efforts have been done to pave the way to sustainable mobility, in order to solve pollution problems and fuel shortage. The use of electric vehicles (EV) is considered as one of the best ecologic and economic solution. However, autonomy barriers and limitations slow the progress and the deployment of this technology. In this paper, we propose an advanced electric vehicles' fleet management architecture. This architecture considers the most important factors that can affect the traveling mode of electric vehicles, in order to offer different services to fleet management companies for an efficient monitoring and management of their fleet…

ROAD SAFETY PERFORMANCES FROM MICRO-SIMULATION CONSIDERING AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES OPERATIONS

2019

Introduction of Autonomous Vehicles in road traffic will remove the impact of the human factor from the driver’s decision-making process, and will transform the criteria for road network design, road infrastructure administration, traffic modeling and assessment tools for road safety management. The paper presents a microsimulation-based approach for safety performance evaluation of roundabouts where different percentages of Autonomous Vehicles are mixed with Conventional Vehicles. The simulated vehicle trajectories exported from VISSIM were used as a basis to estimate traffic conflicts through the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM) for a sample of European roundabouts. In order to be…

The role of heavy vehicles in road safety: Technical improvements and training of professional drivers in EU activities

2011

This paper proposes an analysis of initiatives and measures that the EU has developed, both in terms of research and normative, in order to improve the safety of freight vehicles. The actions undertaken by the EU under the program for road safety, with particular attention to the road freight sector, the more representative, are the following: - Improving the visibility of heavy duty vehicles (HDV), - The elimination of points with poor visibility from the HDV, - Evaluation of measures to reduce accidents related to tires condition, - The standardization and improvement of initial and continuing training of professional drivers. The classification of defects which are considered to have ser…

INTELLI 2013, The Second International Conference on Intelligent Systems and Applications

2013

The research of optimization techniques in the system of goods distribution from warehouses to final users (vehicle routing problem), made considerable savings on the total cost of transport and, consequently, on the final cost of goods, and produced the models applicable to other operating environments (e.g., transport for disabled people, school, municipal waste collection). The analysis conducted on the different models developed under the VRP highlights the support that these models can give on the infomobility of goods.
