Does fragility of States affect realization of Education for all? An empirical essay

2009

More than one child out three, in the world, who don't access to school live in countries which are in conflict or which have governments non-engaged in politics of poverty reduction or which lacks of operating capacity. Given this, in these fragile States, mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa, universal primary schooling will be off target for 2015, so invalidate the Millennium Development Goals. Thus, does fragility of States constraints, in a practical way, the goal of Education for all? In this paper, explanations are provided and empirically tested using Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). From the results, several types of fragilities represent major obstacles to achieving UPE. According …

In 83,3% aller…

Perceived Benefit From Hearing Aid Use and Life-Space Mobility Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults

2018

Objectives: To examine the association between perceived benefit from hearing aid (HA) use and life-space mobility among older adults. Method: Cross-sectional analysis of 76- to 91-year-old community-dwelling adults ( n = 702). Data on perceived hearing with and without a HA were obtained via postal questionnaire and data on life-space mobility (Life-Space Assessment, range = 0-120) via phone interview. Results: Participants who perceived more benefit from HA use, had a better life-space mobility score ( M = 65, SD = 2.6) than participants who had less benefit from using a HA ( M = 55, SD = 3.2). Participants who benefitted more from HA use did not differ from those who did not have a HA (…

Audiologic and Subjective Evaluation of Baha ® Attract Device

2017

We included 9 patients implanted with Baha® Attract. All our patients were evaluated by free field tonal audiometry, free field verbal audiometry and free field verbal audiometry with background noise, all the tests were performed with and without the device. To evaluate the subjective component of the implantation, we used the Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI) and Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit (APHAB). The auditive assessment with the device showed average auditive thresholds of 35.8dB with improvements of 25.8dB over the previous situation. Speech reception thresholds were 37dB with Baha® Attract, showing improvements of 23dB. Maximum discrimination thresholds showed an average…

Are smartphone applications (App) useful to improve hearing?

2020

Third-order accurate monotone cubic Hermite interpolants

2019

Abstract Monotonicity-preserving interpolants are used in several applications as engineering or computer aided design. In last years some new techniques have been developed. In particular, in Arandiga (2013) some new methods to design monotone cubic Hermite interpolants for uniform and non-uniform grids are presented and analyzed. They consist on calculating the derivative values introducing the weighted harmonic mean and a non-linear variation. With these changes, the methods obtained are third-order accurate, except in extreme situations. In this paper, a new general mean is used and a third-order interpolant for all cases is gained. We perform several experiments comparing the known tec…

Fugitives in transit. The Spanish Republican exile through Portugal (1936-1950)

2017

Despite scant attention from historiography, Portugal played an important role as a way station on the road to exile for many Republicans during and after the Spanish Civil War. The situation in the neighbouring country was not easy for these people, as Antonio Oliveira de Salazar’s regime —officially allied with Franco’s Spain— did not recognize them as political refugees, but as illegal immigrants to be returned to Spain, which would have catastrophic consequences for many of them. Through the analysis of abundant primary sources in archives from Spain, Portugal, Mexico and the United States, we seek to understand the details of this Portuguese stage of the exile. We discover how, despite…

Politics of Humanitarianism: The Ahmadiyya and the Provision of Social Welfare

2020

Ahmadi Muslims have combined local contributions and financial support from overseas to support various development projects since the 1920s when they started their mission activities in West Africa. The chapter outlines contemporary social welfare activities of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Ghana and Burkina Faso. Humanitarian aid provided by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and its NGO Humanity First is one of the issues favouring public recognition as well as interreligious dialogue to which the Ahmadis are equally strongly committed. Most of the donations for Humanity First come from members of the Ahmadiyya community, as zakat or sadaqa donations. Public recognition is particularly i…

Sepsis at ICU admission does not decrease 30-day survival in very old patients : a post-hoc analysis of the VIP1 multinational cohort study

2020

AbstractBackgroundThe number of intensive care patients aged ≥ 80 years (Very old Intensive Care Patients; VIPs) is growing. VIPs have high mortality and morbidity and the benefits of ICU admission are frequently questioned. Sepsis incidence has risen in recent years and identification of outcomes is of considerable public importance. We aimed to determine whether VIPs admitted for sepsis had different outcomes than those admitted for other acute reasons and identify potential prognostic factors for 30-day survival.ResultsThis prospective study included VIPs with Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores ≥ 2 acutely admitted to 307 ICUs in 21 European countries. Of 3869 acutely admi…
