An undermined therapeutic alliance: A case study
2021
Seeking help and assistance can prove to be a frustrating experience for intersex individuals: physicians and psychologists can be misinformed about variations of sex characteristics (VSC) and their practice may have a detrimental effect on the physical and psychological wellbeing of indivi- duals with VSC. This paper focuses on how previous negative experiences, such as early genital cosmetic surgery and unaware clinical management, could negatively affect psychotherapeutic relationships. Its principal aims are to: 1) identify which elements in clinical management of VSC may cause difficulties in building a therapeutic alliance and 2) identify which elements may promote the construction an…
The Design Towards a Collaborative Subscription Service : The Case of The Finnish Newspaper Industry
2020
The newspaper industry is challenged with its business models. To stabilize revenues, publishers opted for digital subscriptions for generating additional revenue streams. However, digital subscriptions showcase limited success. News aggregator platforms may promise publishers a pool of paying readers. But platform fees and the loss of customer relationships enact barriers among publishers to join. This study proposes a software prototype based on design science research to address the aforementioned shortcomings by deriving design principles for a collaborative subscription service. Building on the strategic alliance, digital platform and business model literature, this research aims to id…
The Design Towards a News Aggregator Subscription Service: Results from An Online Experiment
2021
The newspaper industry is on a quest to discover sustainable business models. Digital subscriptions are stable revenue generators for most publishers. That being said, smaller publishers face challenges. By not having the same resource base to offset costs compared to larger ones, small publishers are in a constant state of financial unpredictability. Another persistent problem among them is the high churn rate of subscriptions (i.e., the cancelation rate), which suggests a value misalignment between readers and service. New services like news aggregators may promise publishers a large pool of paying readers, as readers have access to diverse content by different publishers and are willing …
The Competing Influences of Initial Depressive Symptomatology and Early Alliance on Early Outcome: A Preliminary Study
2014
We examined 40 psychotherapies, some delivered in combination with pharma-cotherapy, which were all conducted by cognitive behavioral or psychodynamically oriented therapists in a general hospital center for the treatment of light to moder-ate depressive disorders. Our goal was to examine the relationship between early outcome (defined as change in Beck Depression Inventory scores between sessions 2 and 15) and early therapy alliance (as measured at sessions 1 to 5 by the Working Alliance Inventory). We also wanted to concurrently examine the effect of initial depressive symptomatology (BDI at session 2) on early outcome. For the entire sample, both early alliance and initial depressive sym…
Five Interpersonal Factors Are Predictive of the Response to Treatment of Major Depression With Antidepressants in Primary Care
2018
Introduction: Factors relating to the interpersonal relationship between the patient and their physician and social environment are important components, which contribute to their response to treatment for major depressive disorder. This study aimed to assess the influence of optimism, perfectionism, therapeutic alliance, empathy, social support, and adherence to medication regimen in the response to antidepressant treatments in the context of normal primary care clinical practice.Method: We conducted a prospective study in which 24 primary care physicians administered sertraline or escitalopram to 89 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder. The relationship between working alliance with peer mentors and eating psychopathology in a digital 6‐week guided self‐help intervention for anorexia…
2021
Objective: The quality of working alliance (WA) is associated with treatment outcomes across several types of psychiatric disorders and psychological interventions. This study examined the role of WA with peer mentors (people with lived experience of illness) and student mentors (graduated psychology students) in a 6-week, digital, guided self-help (GSH) intervention for anorexia nervosa. Method: Ninety-nine patients rated weekly, for 6 weeks: (a) eating psychopathology using the short version of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-QS) and (b) WA with a student mentor (n = 14) or a peer mentor (n = 10). WA was assessed by asking patients the extent to which they felt comforta…
Corresponsabilità educativa nei servizi 0-6. La percezione di genitori e insegnanti.
2021
The 0-6 years integrated education service has opened new perspectives on parental participation and the forms in which it can be developed and put into practice. This paper intends to offer a theoretical framework relating to the role of families and the participation in the context of education services, based on a dialogue between family and education services. Through a survey conducted in the city of Palermo, some indications are proposed with respect to ways of improving the school-family co-education synergy, suggesting some good practices for a constructive and mutually responsible alliance.
