A User-Centric Approach for Personalized Service Provisioning in Pervasive Environments

2011

Published version of an article published in Wireless Personal Communications (2011). Also available from the publisher at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11277-011-0387-3 The vision of pervasive environments is being realized more than ever with the proliferation of services and computing resources located in our surrounding environments. Identifying those services that deserve the attention of the user is becoming an increasingly-challenging task. In this paper, we present an adaptive multi-criteria decision making mechanism for recommending relevant services to the mobile user. In this context, "Relevance" is determined based on a user-centric approach that combines both the reputation of the…

Coronary drainage in theOctopus vulgaris systemic heart

1990

The vascular architecture of the coronary system of the systemic heart of the octopus (Octopus vulgaris) has been studied by means of both the corrosion-cast method and scanning electron microscopy. It is shown that the Octopus systemic heart myocardium is supplied through a very rich capillary network, the complexity of which probably reflects the complex organization of the ventricular wall. Drainage occurs by way of a classic venous system that originates from this capillary network. Morphological evidences are reported indicating that the coronary bed communicates directly with the ventricular lumen. In the isolated perfused systemic heart, the flow through this system is related direct…

Free-surface flows solved by means of SPH schemes with numerical diffusive terms

2010

A novel system of equations has been defined which contains diffusive terms in both the continuity and energy equations and, at the leading order, coincides with a standard weakly-compressible SPH scheme with artificial viscosity. A proper state equation is used to associate the internal energy variation to the pressure field and to increase the speed of sound when strong deformations/compressions of the fluid occur. The increase of the sound speed is associated to the shortening of the time integration step and, therefore, allows a larger accuracy during both breaking and impact events. Moreover, the diffusive terms allows reducing the high frequency numerical acoustic noise and smoothing …

Taking on the “Dark Side”–Coping With Technostress

2020

Technostress is stress that individuals experience due to their use of information technology. It is associated with critical workplace consequences including reduced productivity. While the negative consequences are well known, what is less understood is how individuals can cope with technostress to alleviate them. We report on two studies that explain how organizational IT users can cope with technostress. The first is a qualitative study conducted in the U.K., by interviewing thirty executives/knowledge workers. Here, we identified seven coping behaviors that individuals engage in, in response to technostress. The second is a survey of 846 U.S. employees who use IT in their workplace. He…

Emotional user experience: Traits, events, and states☆

2015

Emotional experience has become an important topic in human-technology interaction research and design. Nevertheless, such research and design often lacks a proper explanatory basis and methodologically robust operationalisation. In this article, a conceptualisation of emotional user experience is formulated based on the appraisal theory of emotion, where the goal congruence of the interaction events and the task-independent individual traits are thought to underlie the user's emotional response. A laboratory study with N=50 participants conducting ordinary computer tasks is reported. The results suggest that subjective emotional experience depends on a number of factors relating to individ…

Overview of Telecom Operator Software Market

2009

Telecommunications is an essential enabler of modern societies and a global vertical industry, providing communication and information services, with its annual revenue of over trillion euros. In this book, a company providing these services is referred to as a telecom operator or communications service provider (CSP). CSPs create value by offering connectivity to and via an infrastructure of networks for transferring signals. The core business processes in a telecom operator company therefore revolve, on one hand, around physical networks and their maintenance, and on the other, managing their customers and their use of the connectivity services over the networks.

Improving protein secondary structure predictions by prediction fusion

2009

Protein secondary structure prediction is still a challenging problem at today. Even if a number of prediction methods have been presented in the literature, the various prediction tools that are available on-line produce results whose quality is not always fully satisfactory. Therefore, a user has to know which predictor to use for a given protein to be analyzed. In this paper, we propose a server implementing a method to improve the accuracy in protein secondary structure prediction. The method is based on integrating the prediction results computed by some available on-line prediction tools to obtain a combined prediction of higher quality. Given an input protein p whose secondary struct…

A system for sign language sentence recognition based on common sense context

2005

The paper proposes a complete framework for sign language recognition that integrates common sense in order to deal with sentences. The proposed system is based on a cognitive architecture allows modeling and managing the knowledge of the recognition process in a simple and robust way. The final abstraction level of this architecture introduces the semantic context and the analysis of the correctness of a sentence given a sequence of recognized signs. Experimentations are presented using the Italian sign language (LIS), and shows that the system maintains the recognition rate high when set of sign grows, correcting erroneous recognized single sign using the context
