Scavare, dal latino excavare (ex-cavare), possiede etimologicamente il significato di “rendere cavo” mediante l’azione del subtrahĕre (sottrarre). Tuttavia il significato del termine all’interno della sua necessaria disambiguazione non può essere inteso limitatamente alla luce dell’etimologia latina. In 2003 and 2004, in the month of July, Culotta was invited, first among the various Palermitan teachers who subsequently took part in this experience, to hold one of the intensive workshop courses in Architectural Composition at the IUAV. The essay traces the main events and themes of the journal « In Architettura. Il giornale della progettazione» founded in Cefalù by Pasquale Culotta. Up until 1993, the year of publication of the last issue, the periodical represented a precious place for debate and comparison, a tool for questioning oneself on the profession of architect, on the sense of doing and teaching, as well as than an opportunity to establish contacts with distant realities, making the young Sicilian architecture an internationally known avant-garde.
