Supercritical assisted atomization (SAA) is an efficient technique to produce microparticles and composite microspheres formed by polymers and pharmaceutical compounds. In this work polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was proposed as carrier for pharmaceutical compounds that show a poor solubility in water medium. Indeed, this polymer is hydrosoluble and can be generally used to enhance the dissolution rate of hydrophobic compounds when finely dispersed in it. However, it is difficult to obtain coprecipitates with a uniform dispersion of the active molecule using other micronization techniques. Specific and sensitive procedures have been developed which enabled the structure elucidation of the polypeptide antibiotics (peptaibols), paracelsin isolated from Trichoderma reesei, and of trichotoxin A-50 from Trichoderma viride, by fast atom bombardment and field desorption mass spectrometry. Both peptides were found to exhibit a pronounced microheterogeneity by single and multiple exchange of amino acids. The complex formation of cylindrical brush polymers with poly(l-lysine) side chains (PLL) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) can induce a helical conformation of the cylindrical brush polymer in aqueous solution (Gunari, N.; Cong, Y.; Zhang, B.; Fischer, K.; Janshoff, A.; Schmidt, M. Pressure dependence in the methyl vinyl ketone + OH and methacrolein + OH oxidation reactions: an electronic structure study.

High-level electronic structure calculations were carried out for the study of the reaction pathways in the OH-initiated oxidations of methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) and methacrolein (MACR). For the two conformers of MVK (called synperiplanar and antiperiplanar), the addition channels of OH to the terminal and central carbon atom of the double bond dominate the overall rate constant, whereas the abstraction of the methyl hydrogen atoms has no significant kinetic role. In the case of MACR, only the antiperiplanar conformer is important in its reactivity. 5-Substituted 4,5-Dihydro-1,2,4-triazin-3(2H)-ones from the Unprecedented Reaction between α-N-Protected Amino Acid Hydrazides and NaBH4

α-N-Protected amino acid hydrazides (1) readily reacted with NaBH4 to afford 5-substituted 4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazin-3(2H)-one derivatives 2 in good yields. Unfortunately, the reaction caused partial racemization at the α-amino acidic carbon atom of the starting hydrazide. A mechanism, supported by experimental evidence, has been proposed in an attempt to explain this to date unprecedented reaction. Transformation of monuron photosensitized by soil extracted humic substances: energy or hydrogen transfer mechanism?

The humic and fulvic acids extracted from a Ranker type soil sensitize the transformation of monuron. When monuron is irradiated at 365 nm in the presence of the fulvic acid, its degradation is faster in deoxygenated medium than in air-saturated solution. Chloride ions are released, and the para-hydroxylated derivative is formed as upon direct photolysis. It is deduced that the consumption of monuron observed in the absence of oxygen is due to an energy transfer from reactive triplet states of the fulvic acid to monuron. Energy transfer reactions also take place when hydroquinone or acetophenone are used as sensitizers, showing that the energy level of the triplet state of monuron is lower …

Intrinsic apoptosis is orchestrated by a group of proteins that mediate the coordinated disruption of mitochondrial membranes. Bax is a multi-domain protein that, upon activation, disrupts the integrity of the mitochondrial outer membrane by forming pores. We strategically introduced glutamic acids into a short sequence of the Bax protein that constitutively creates membrane pores. The resulting BaxE5 peptide efficiently permeabilizes membranes at acidic pH, showing low permeabilization at neutral pH. Abstract 2,6,9,13-Tetraaza[14]paracyclophane ( 3, B323 ) represents a simple model for Zn containing enzymes like HCAII which possess additional reactive groups in the proximity of the metal center. The Zn 2+ . 3 complex shows notable catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of p -nitrophenyl acetate. Structural modifications of 3 which affect to the non coordinated nitrogen atom greatly modify the catalytic activity of the receptor.
Reactions of Piperazin-2-one, Morpholin-3-one, and Thiomorpholin-3-one with Triethyl Phosphite Prompted by Phosphoryl Chloride: Scope and Limitations

The reaction of the title lactams with triethyl phosphite prompted by phosphoryl chloride provided six-membered ring heterocyclic phosphonates or bisphosphonates. These novel scaffolds might be of interest as building blocks in medicinal chemistry. The course of the reaction was dependent on the structure of the used substrate. Topology-Dependent Swichability of Peptide Secondary Structures in Bioconjugates with Complex Architectures

Peptide sequences, which exhibit a reversible pH-responsive coil to α-helix secondary structure transition, are conjugated to polymer precursors to yield linear AB and graft ABA peptide-poly(ethylene oxide) conjugates. While the PEO B-block is comparable, the conjugates differ in topologies of the peptide bearing A-blocks. The influences of topology on the structure transitions in the peptide segments are investigated, comparing linear AB-bioconjugates with graft ABA-bioconjugates having multiple peptide segments combined in star or pom-pom topologies.
