Una scheda per il «Flaminio» di Federico e Pergolesi: «Benedetto, maledetto» tra memoria della scena ed equivoci del popolare
2019
Checca’s canzona ‘Benedetto, maledetto’, the shortest number in "Il Flaminio" (1735) by Gennaro Antonio Federico and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, has often been considered to be a direct quotation or a convincing inimitation of a popular song. In fact, its poetic text derives from the comedy "La Tancia" (1611) by Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger. In both works the scene shows a therapeutic strategy adopted to stop a (presumed) epileptic seizure. The symbols and rituals described by Buonarroti and Federico refer to popular beliefs that were widespread in Italy, and that were brought to the stage also by the actors of the commedia dell’arte. Igor Stravisky uses Pergolesi’s short piece to i…
Identification of subdominant sourdough lactic acid bacteria and their evolution during laboratory-scale fermentations
2007
Abstract Presumptive lactic acid bacterial cocci were found in six sourdoughs (out of 20) from the Abruzzo region (central Italy) and subjected to phenotypic and genotypic characterization. A total of 21 isolates, recognized as seven strains by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)–polymerase chain reaction (PCR) typing, were identified by a polyphasic approach, consisting of 16S rRNA gene sequencing, multiplex PCR assays and physiological features, as Enterococcus faecium and Pediococcus pentosaceus. Four strains belonging to those species and previously isolated from wheat kernels were inoculated in sterile flour to verify their capacity to grow in sourdough environment. Doughs with s…
Assessing Seagrass Restoration Actions through a Micro-Bathymetry Survey Approach (Italy, Mediterranean Sea)
2022
Underwater photogrammetry provides a means of generating high-resolution products such as dense point clouds, 3D models, and orthomosaics with centimetric scale resolutions. Underwater photogrammetric models can be used to monitor the growth and expansion of benthic communities, including the assessment of the conservation status of seagrass beds and their change over time (time lapse micro-bathymetry) with OBIA classifications (Object-Based Image Analysis). However, one of the most complex aspects of underwater photogrammetry is the accuracy of the 3D models for both the horizontal and vertical components used to estimate the surfaces and volumes of biomass. In this study, a photogrammetry…
First record of brown long-eared bat Plecotus auritus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) for Sicily island (Italy)
2015
The knowledge of the bat fauna of Sicily (Southern Italy) is scarce, fragmentary or sometimes even confusing. A recent review mentioned 20 species for the region, but it is likely that the checklist of bats of Sicily is still far from being exhaustive. To help fill this gap, in the past few years specific studies were carried out on the distribution of bat species in Sicily, especially in the woodlands of the Nebrodi Mountains. In the municipality of Caronia (Messina province) has captured a young female brown long-eared bat Plecotus auritus (Linneaus, 1758). The capture of P. auritus in Sicily represents the first record of brown long-eared bat Plecotus auritus for Sicily island, an intere…
Assimilative and Accommodative Coping and Older People’s Leisure Activities
2019
Objectives: Assimilative and accommodative coping strategies have hardly been studied in relation to leisure activities in old age. We investigated whether tenacious goal pursuit (TGP) and flexible goal adjustment (FGA) influence the association between physical performance and participation in leisure activities. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted among 187 community-dwelling people aged 79 to 93 years. TGP, FGA, and leisure activity participation were asked with questionnaires. Physical performance was assessed with the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Results: TGP moderated the relationship between physical performance and leisure activity participation. Despite…
HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FUNCTIONING AS DETERMINANTS OF PURPOSE IN LIFE IN OLD AGE
2018
AbstractPurpose in life reflects the feeling of having goals and meaning in life. Higher purpose in life has been shown to predict better health outcomes in old age and even buffer against mortality. However, it is not known how current health and functional status reflect on the possibilities of older people to live a meaningful life. Therefore, this study aimed to explore associations of health and physical functioning with purpose in life. The participants were 273 community-dwelling 75-year-old men and women from the AGNES study. Purpose in life was assessed with the subscale of the Scales of Psychological well-being (range 7–42). Current health situation and walking ability were self-r…
Nutritional status, physical performance and disability in the elderly of the Peruvian Andes
2016
Background: Although nutritional status plays an important part in the physical performance and disability of older people, this relationship has been little studied in developing countries. Aims: A study on the effects of nutritional status on the physical performance and functional status of elderly people living in rural areas of the Peruvian Andes. Methods: The study concerned 222 people aged ≥65 years living in a rural area of the Peruvian Andes. The Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used to classify participants as malnourished (MNA <= 17), at risk of malnutrition (MNA 18-23), or well-nourished (MNA>= 24). The short physical performance battery (SPPB) and six-minute walking …
Mediterranean diet and mobility decline in older persons.
2011
We examined whether adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet has positive effects on mobility assessed over a nine-year follow-up in a representative sample of older adults. This research is part of the InCHIANTI Study, a prospective population-based study of older persons in Tuscany, Italy. The sample for this analysis included 935 women and men aged 65 years and older. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed at baseline by the standard 10-unit Mediterranean diet score (MDS). Lower extremity function was measured at baseline, and at the 3, 6 and 9-year follow-up visits using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). At baseline, higher adherence to Mediterranean diet was assoc…

This review is inspired by the publication of the first three issues of the new series of magazine «Moderni e Antichi. Papers of the Center for Studies on Classicism directed by Roberto Cardini», published between 2019 and 2021, edited by the Center for Studies on Classicism of Prato, by Edizioni Polistampa from Florence.
