Inhibition of molybdenum blue formation by ATP.
1981
Molybdenum blue formation was not affected by the presence of ATP up to a concentration of 1.2 muM/l. At higher concentrations the color development was inhibited relative to ATP concentration, finally reaching complete inhibition. Auto-hydrolysis of ATP was found at a rate of 1.4%/h. An exact determination of inorganic phosphate in the presence of easily hydrolyzed phosphate esters requires the measurement of extinction at fixed time intervals and extrapolation back to time zero.
Detection and correction of interferences in spectroscopy techniques
2001
By combining the apparent content curves method and the Youden method, we have developed a strategy for detecting constant and proportional errors in spectroscopy techniques. A method for elimination of spectral interferences (different of blank) is also proposed. To apply of this method there must be a matrix effect that varies with the amount of sample or a simulated matrix effect provided working under different experimental conditions that induce a variation of the analytical signal of the analyte. The proposed procedures have been applied to the determination of methyl orange in presence of phenol red, bromothymol blue and bromocresol purple.
Haloperoxidase Mimicry by CeO2−xNanorods Combats Biofouling
2016
CeO2-x nanorods are functional mimics of natural haloperoxidases. They catalyze the oxidative bromination of phenol red to bromophenol blue and of natural signaling molecules involved in bacterial quorum sensing. Laboratory and field tests with paint formulations containing 2 wt% of CeO2-x nanorods show a reduction in biofouling comparable to Cu2 O, the most typical biocidal pigment.
Pressure-induced electron transfer in ferrimagnetic Prussian blue analogs
2003
M\"ossbauer and magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed under pressure on three Prussian blue analogs, ${\mathrm{K}}_{0.1}{\mathrm{Co}}_{4}[{\mathrm{Fe}(\mathrm{CN})}_{6}{]}_{2.7}\ensuremath{\cdot}18{\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O},$ ${\mathrm{K}}_{0.28}{\mathrm{Co}}_{4}[{\mathrm{Fe}(\mathrm{CN})}_{6}{]}_{2.76}\ensuremath{\cdot}18{\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O},$ and ${\mathrm{Cs}}_{0.7}{\mathrm{Co}}_{4}[{\mathrm{Fe}(\mathrm{CN})}_{6}{]}_{2.9}\ensuremath{\cdot}16{\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}.$ A pressure-induced electron transfer ${\mathrm{Co}}^{2+}(S=\frac{3}{2})\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{Fe}}^{3+}(S=\frac{1}{2})\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\mathrm{Co}}^{3+}(S=0)\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}(S=0)…
The Innervation of Taste Buds in the Soft Palate of the Rat as Revealed by Methylene Blue Staining.
1996
Light microscopic data on the innervation of taste buds in the soft palate of the rat obtained by methylene blue (MB) supravital staining are presented here for the first time. The taste pore including subpopulations of taste bud cells and nerve fibers were stained. Intragemmal nerve fibers were detected ascending up to the taste pore; this suggests the possibility of additional paracellular pathways in taste transduction directly via nerve fibers. Moreover, relatively large bulbous or laminar enlargements of the intragemmal nerve fibers were found. The branches of these nerve fibers, showing minute spiny protuberances, appeared to anastomose. Some perigemmal nerve fibers were also seen in …
Cationic polyaspartamide-based nanocomplexes mediate siRNA entry and down-regulation of the pro-inflammatory mediator high mobility group box 1 in ai…
2015
Abstract High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a nonhistone protein secreted by airway epithelial cells in hyperinflammatory diseases such as asthma. In order to down-regulate HMGB1 expression in airway epithelial cells, siRNA directed against HMGB1 was delivered through nanocomplexes based on a cationic copolymer of poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)- d,l -aspartamide (PHEA) by using H441 cells. Two copolymers were used in these experiments bearing respectively spermine side chains (PHEA-Spm) and both spermine and PEG2000 chains (PHEA-PEG-Spm). PHEA-Spm and PHEA-PEG-Spm derivatives complexed dsDNA oligonucleotides with a w/w ratio of 1 and higher as shown by a gel retardation assay. PHEA-Spm and PHEA-P…

An individual-based dataset of carbon and nitrogen isotopic data of Callinectes sapidus in invaded Mediterranean waters
2022
The characterisation of functional traits of non-indigenous and invasive species is crucial to assess their impact within invaded habitats. Successful biological invasions are often facilitated by the generalist diet of the invaders which can modify their trophic position and adapt to new ecosystems determining changes in their structure and functioning. Invasive crustaceans are an illustrative example of such mechanisms since their trophic habits can determine important ecological impacts on aquatic food webs. The Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus is currently established and considered invasive in the Mediterranean Sea where it has been recorded for the first time between 1947 and 19…
A randomized controlled trial of intervention in fear of childbirth*1
2001
Abstract OBJECTIVE: To compare intensive and conventional therapy for severe fear of childbirth. METHODS: In Finland, 176 women who had fear of childbirth were randomly assigned at the 26th gestational week to have either intensive therapy (mean 3.8 ± 1.0 sessions with obstetrician and one with midwife) or conventional therapy (mean 2.0 ± 0.6 sessions), with follow-up 3 months postpartum. Pregnancy-related anxiety and concerns, satisfaction with childbirth, and puerperal depression were assessed with specific questionnaires. Power analysis, based on previous studies, showed that 74 women per group were necessary to show a 50% reduction in cesarean rates. RESULTS: Birth-related concerns decr…
Biological activities of the LXRα and β agonist, 4β-hydroxycholesterol, and of its isomer, 4α-hydroxycholesterol, on oligodendrocytes: effects on cel…
2013
The biochemical and biological properties of 4β-hydroxycholesterol and of its isomer, 4α-hydroxycholesterol, are not well known. So, we determined the ability of 4α- and 4β-hydroxycholesterol to react with LXRα and LXRβ, and we characterized the activities of these oxysterols on oligodendrocytes which are myelin synthesizing cells. The effects of 4α- and 4β-hydroxycholesterol were studied on 158N murine oligodendrocytes to assess their activities on cell growth and viability, oxidative and inflammatory status. To this end different parameters were used: cell counting with trypan blue; identification of dead cells and cell cycle analysis with propidium iodide; evaluation of mitochondrial dep…
