Una certa dualità. Il problema mente-corpo e il paradosso della thinking matter

2022

Starting from the hypothesis of a continuity between the separability of the intellect mentioned in De Anima and the Cartesian mens, in this entry we propose a version of what in contemporary debate on the mind-body problem is considered a third way between cerebral monism and the dualism of substances, that is the theory of the double aspect. Beyond the usual reference to qualia, the irreducibility of the mental to the physical could be argued through a reference to the transcendental dimension of consciousness. The result is an update dualistic perspective, in which the mind, while depending for some aspects on the nervous system, does not have an exclusively biological nature, rather con…

Probleme polnischer Moraltheologen mit dem nachsynodalen apostolischen Schreiben von Papst Franziskus Amoris laetitia

2020

Amoris laetitia, the post-synodal Exhortation of Pope Francis, provoked varied reactions among theologians. Especially controversial is the question of the admission of divorced people living in civil partnership to the sacraments of penance and reconciliation and the Eucharist. The present text presents the main arguments of Polish moral theologians, which came to the fore during the discussion on the practice of sacrament for divorced and remarried people. The Polish theologians’ arguments cited are not limited to simply quoting the teachings of Pope John Paul II, but refer to important arguments from the theology of marriage, theology of sacraments and moral theology. The author indicate…

Movement Variability Increases With Shoulder Pain When Compensatory Strategies of the Upper Body Are Constrained

2017

[DE] This cross-sectional study analyzed the influence of chronic shoulder pain (CSP) on movement variability/kinematics during humeral elevation, with the trunk and elbow motions constrained to avoid compensatory strategies. For this purpose, 37 volunteers with CSP as the injured group (IG) and 58 participants with asymptomatic shoulders as the control group (CG) participated in the study. Maximum humeral elevation (Emax), maximum angular velocity (Velmax), variability of the maximum angle (CVEmax), functional variability (Func_var), and approximate entropy (ApEn) were calculated from the kinematic data. Patients' pain was measured on the visual analogue scale (VAS). Compared with the CG, …

Differences in estimates of change of bone accrual and body composition in children because of scan mode selection with the prodigy densitometer.

2004

Abstract Girls of age 10–13 yr with Tanner stage I–III maturation status ( n = 155) were measured using the Prodigy (GE Lunar) densitometer. Bone area (BA), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone mineral density (BMD) were assessed for the whole body, lumbar spine, and proximal femur using the Thin (T) and Standard (S) scan modes at years 1 and 3 of the study. The differences obtained between the T and S mode at year 1 were 1–2% for the lumbar spine and proximal femur and 5–11% for the whole body. For those girls whose default mode changed from T at year 1 to S mode at year 3, the estimated gain in BA, BMC, and BMD was 3.4%, 7.6%, and 3.1% respectively, lower than that obtained when scanning …

Electromyographic Studies in Abdominal Exercises: A Literature Synthesis

2008

Abstract Objective The purpose of this article is to synthesize the literature on studies that investigate electromyographic activity of abdominal muscles during abdominal exercises performance. Methods MEDLINE and Sportdiscus databases were searched, as well as the Web pages of electronic journals access, ScienceDirect, and Swetswise, from 1950 to 2008. The terms used to search the literature were abdominal muscle and the specific names for the abdominal muscles and their combination with electromyography, and/or strengthening, and/or exercise, and/or spine stability, and/or low back pain. The related topics included the influence of the different exercises, modification of exercise positi…

Glucocorticoid-sensitive hereditary inclusion body myositis.

1996

We report a hereditary muscle disorder with features of inclusion body myositis (IBM) in two adult sisters with slowly progressive asymmetrical muscle weakness. The findings of light microscopic and ultrastructural investigations of muscle biopsy specimens were consistent with a diagnosis of IBM. Both patients improved and stabilized on immunosuppressive treatment with corticosteroids and azathioprine. This differentiates our patients from other sporadic and familial cases of IBM. Clinical and histological features are described and compared with those of other previously reported families with IBM.

Reconstruction of vertebral body in thoracolumbar AO type A post-traumatic fractures by balloon kyphoplasty: a series of 85 patients with a long foll…

2019

Background Traumatic fractures of the thoracolumbar spine are common injuries, accounting for approximately 90% of all spinal traumas. Optimal management of these fractures still gives rises to much debate in the literature. Currently, one of the treatment options in young patients with stable traumatic vertebral fractures is conservative treatment using braces. Kyphoplasty as a minimally invasive procedure has been shown to be effective in stabilizing vertebral body fractures, resulting in immediate pain relief and improved physical function with early return to work activity. The aim of the study is to report VAS, ODI scores, and kyphosis correction following treatment. Methods This is a …

"El cuerpo de Giulia-no" de Jorge Eduardo Eielson: cuerpo fisico y cuerpo mental

2016

El cuerpo de Giulia-no de Jorge Eduardo Eielson is a discontinous and elusive text. Written in the 1950s but unpublished until 1971, it is an undoubtedly innovative work which thwarts the readersʼ expectations due to its fragmentary composition, elliptical tendencies, and the underlying dialogue amongst literature, visual arts and science running throughout the text. In this article, I analyse one element of the novel which expresses in an evident way the relationship between literature, theatre and visual arts: The body of its protagonist—Giulia— which is a physical and a mental body, according with the Buddhist vision of Eielson El cuerpo de Giulia-no es un texto discontinuo, indefinible.…

A common biological basis of obesity and nicotine addiction

2013

Contains fulltext : 128630.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Smoking influences body weight such that smokers weigh less than non-smokers and smoking cessation often leads to weight increase. The relationship between body weight and smoking is partly explained by the effect of nicotine on appetite and metabolism. However, the brain reward system is involved in the control of the intake of both food and tobacco. We evaluated the effect of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) affecting body mass index (BMI) on smoking behavior, and tested the 32 SNPs identified in a meta-analysis for association with two smoking phenotypes, smoking initiation (SI) and the number of cigarettes smoked …
