Suicidio e autocensura nelle traduzioni italiane dei Frauenromane

2015

Foreign literature as poison: (self-)censorship in the translation of German popular fiction in Italy during the 1930s

2018

Between the 1920s and 1930s, the translation of foreign contemporary novels into Italian was encouraged by publishers, meeting the needs of a new readership, which was larger and more heterogeneous than before the war. However, the sharp rise in the number of imported novels provoked strong disapproval. In a context of heightened nationalism and cultural autocracy, translation was considered a polluting, anti-patriotic and servile practice. The censorship that took place, however, was mostly implemented via a tacit compromise between the publishers and the regime, rather than by repressive institutional actions. In order to protect themselves from sanctions and requisitions, publishers and …

2022

The history of Italian publishing industry in the last years of Fascism reveals different strategies, that outline a non-heterogeneous panorama of the positions taken by publishers towards the regime's cultural policy. Alongside the publishers, like Corticelli, Salani and Guanda, who were somehow ready to collaborate with the regime, there were others who found constant compromises to keep afloat even not unconditionally submit to the new rules. The article illustrates the main trends of this phenomenon, by focusing on the Mondadori case and illustrating some contradictions that characterized its editorial policy.

Writing without shame: the issue of female sexuality in the Anglo-American translations of Passion simple, L’Événement and L’Occupation by Annie Erna…

2011

This article focuses on the rendering of the discourse on sexuality in Passion simple and L’Occupation and that on procreation in Happening in the Anglo-American translations of these three texts. Annie Ernaux conceives writing as a political activity, one of whose aim is to denounce male domination by means of the textual inscription of feminine sexuality and of female corporality. Indeed the author-narrator wishes to write “without shame” in order to break a code of silence imposed by society. The effort to objectify the discourse on the body which characterizes Ernaux’s writing is based on a style devoid of metaphors and marked by numerous repetitions. These textual stakes are simplified…

2019

The Patres ecclesiae?s works were a frequent topic of discussion at the time in which many humanists stood against the decadent medieval scholastics. That Juan Luis Vives was part of this tradition is demonstrated in his commentaries on Saint Augustine works. Despite its pedagogical function, the scholia of the Valencian author became quite subjective. In this sense, his ecdotic work or, specially, his «criticisms and censures» can be mentioned. Here, Vives strongly disapproves of the intense political and intellectual turmoil of his epoch. Thus, this article is aimed at describing those annotations in which Vives adopts such an Erasmist point of view to comment Augustine?s De Civitate Dei.…

UNESCO::CIENCIAS DE LAS ARTES Y LAS LETRASthe reiteration of his arguments will be remarked throughout the Commentarii. Sexuality in translation. Exploring the troubled seas of (un)official censorship: James Joyce's Ulysses in Serbo-Croatian

2017

Economic Double Censorship

2020

This chapter explores the censorship impact generated by economic logic on the selection and coverage of topics in factual formats and current affairs documentaries on French television. This prelimina- ry research studies more specifically the subcontracting relationships between TV channels and production companies from semi- structured interviews with various categories of professionals (managers of TV press agencies, journalists, directors, Commissioning Editor). The analysis distinguishes two types of censorship ef- fects. The competitive relationships and the business models of the broadcasters condition their positions in the media field and thus exercise a structural censorship on t…
