Confirmation of in situ exposure of fish to secondary treated bleached-kraft mill effluent using a laboratory simulation
1998
To corroborate the responses in whitefish (Coregonus Iavaretus L.) exposed to elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleached-kraft pulp mill effluent (BKME) in situ, a 30-d laboratory exposure was carried out at concentrations simulating the field conditions. The flow-through exposures were conducted at four secondary (activated sludge) treated effluent (STE) concentrations: 1.3, 2.3, 3.5, and 7%. To evaluate the role of the secondary treatment, fish were also exposed to one concentration (3.5%) of pretreated effluent (PTE) from the mill. Compared to the control, whitefish liver 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity was twofold in fish exposed to 3.5% STE, which was similar to monooxygenas…
Breakthrough in the α-Perchlorination of Acyl Chlorides
2012
The preparation of -perchloroacyl chlorides, from reaction of the corresponding unfunctionalized acyl halides with chlorine, was efficiently achieved under base-catalysis, using a tetraalkylammonium chloride as catalyst. The process is solvent-free and the procedure is easy, inexpensive, and suitable for scale-up.
Removal of Phenol from Water in the Presence of NaCl in Undivided Cells Equipped with Carbon Felt or Ni Cathodes: Effect of Air Pressure
2022
Recently, the electrochemical treatment of wastewater polluted by recalcitrant organics and containing chlorides was shown to be significantly improved adopting proper operative conditions such as suitable anodes and cathodes and low current density. In particular, the use of suitable cathodes such as carbon felt or silver could increase the removal of TOC and reduce the formation of chlorinated by-products. In this study, attention was focused on the utilization of carbon felt cathodes with the main aim to evaluate the effect of air pressure on the process using phenol as model organic pollutant. It was shown that, in the presence of carbon felt cathode, the use of pressurized air allows b…
Modulation of immune parameters of roach, Rutilus rutilus, exposed to untreated ECF and TCF bleached pulp effluents
2000
Abstract The present study was designed to assess the effects of elemental chlorine free (ECF) and totally chlorine free (TCF) pulp and paper mill effluents on the immune defence of the roach ( Rutilus rutilus ). Fish were exposed for 5 weeks to concentrations of 0, 0.6, 2, 6 and 20% of untreated effluents from ECF or TCF bleaching processes. In order to study the capability to respond to foreign antigens the fish were immunised with bovine γ-globulin (BGG) 3 weeks before sampling. The numbers of anti-BGG antibody-secreting cells and immunoglobulin-secreting cells in the spleen and blood, as well as the levels of the anti-BGG antibodies and concentrations of immunoglobulin in plasma and the…
Mass spectra of halogenated esters 6—Methyl esters of some trihalogenated propanoic and butanoic acids
1984
The mass spectral fragmentation of trihalogenated methyl esters, formed in the reactions of monochlorinated methyl propenoates and 2-butenoates with Cl2, BrCl and Br2, have been investigated. In most cases α-cleavage gives the base peak, [COOCH3]+, the peaks originating from the subsequent losses of one or two halogen atoms also being abundant. The primary loss of a halogen atom is more prominent in the C4 derivatives, Br˙ and Cl˙ being preferentially lost from the 2- and 3-positions, respectively. The McLafferty rearrangement yields in one case the base peak; the 2-halo compounds could in general be distinguished by that fragmentation. Typical for all 2-bromo-substituted methyl butanoates …
Chlorine isotope composition of volcanic rocks and gases at Stromboli volcano (Aeolian Islands, Italy): Inferences on magmatic degassing prior to 201…
2017
Abstract Among the magmatic volatiles, chlorine (Cl) is degassed at shallow depths offering the opportunity to investigate the behavior of magmatic degassing close to the surface, and the possible occurrence of chemical and isotopic fractionation related to gas/melt partitioning. However, it is still unclear if the isotopic composition of Cl (δ 37 Cl) can be used as a proxy of magmatic degassing. In this work, we investigate the concentrations of chlorine and sulfur, and the Cl isotope composition of rocks and plume gases collected at Stromboli volcano, Aeolian Islands, Italy. This volcano was chosen because it is characterized by persistent eruptive activity (i.e., Strombolian explosions) …
Disposable chlorine dioxide wipes for high-level disinfection in the ENT department: A systematic review
2020
Abstract Background Nasopharyngoscope reprocessing methods should be effective, rapid and reproducible with moderate cost. Tristel Trio Wipes system (TTWS) is a manual reprocessing method based on chlorine dioxide that has lately emerged in ENT department. This review aims to collect evidence on this system. Methods The PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases were searched for all the studies on TTWS or one of its components. Data were grouped according to the study type. Results Ten articles were included in the review. TTWS ensured high-level disinfection in laboratory and clinical setting. Although the limitations of the manual systems, TTWS proved to be faster than automat…
Optical Absorption of Excimer Laser‐Induced Dichlorine Monoxide in Silica Glass and Excitation of Singlet Oxygen Luminescence by Energy Transfer from…
2021
An optical absorption (OA) band of interstitial dichlorine monoxide molecules with peak at 4.7 eV and halfwidth 0.94 eV is identified in F2 laser - irradiated (photon energy=7.9 eV) synthetic silica glass bearing both interstitial O2 and Cl2 molecules. Alongside with intrinsic defects, this OA band can contribute to solarization of silica glasses produced from SiCl4. While the formation of ClClO is confirmed by its Raman signature, its structural isomer ClOCl may also contribute to this induced OA band. Thermal destruction of this band between 300C and 400C almost completely restores the pre-irradiation concentration of interstitial Cl2. An additional weak OA band at 3.5 eV is tentatively a…
