El ?Alivio de las Indias?. la Real Hacienda Filipina, 1565-1800

2019

An Artificial Bee Colony Approach for Classification of Remote Sensing Imagery

2018

This paper presents a novel Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) approach for supervised classification of remote sensing images. One proposes to apply an ABC algorithm to optimize the coefficients of the set of polynomial discriminant functions. We have experimented the proposed ABC-based classifier algorithm for a Landsat 7 ETM+ image database, evaluating the influence of the ABC model parameters on the classifier performances. Such ABC model parameters are: numbers of employed/onlooker/scout bees, number of epochs, and polynomial degree. One has compared the best ABC classifier Overall Accuracy (OA) with the performances obtained using a set of benchmark classifiers (NN, NP, RBF, and SVM). The re…

PolyACO+: a multi-level polygon-based ant colony optimisation classifier

2017

Ant Colony Optimisation for classification has mostly been limited to rule based approaches where artificial ants walk on datasets in order to extract rules from the trends in the data, and hybrid approaches which attempt to boost the performance of existing classifiers through guided feature reductions or parameter optimisations. A recent notable example that is distinct from the mainstream approaches is PolyACO, which is a proof of concept polygon-based classifier that resorts to ant colony optimisation as a technique to create multi-edged polygons as class separators. Despite possessing some promise, PolyACO has some significant limitations, most notably, the fact of supporting classific…

Biodeterioration

2017

The biodeterioration of organic and inorganic materials, as well as polymers, is a complex of alteration processes induced by the growing and metabolic activ- ity of organisms. It can be recognized on monuments, wall paintings, stone, wood, paper, vegetal/animal fibers, and parchment artworks. As defined by Hueck (1968), biodeterioration is “any undesirable change in the properties of a material caused by the vital activities of organisms”; this definition is accepted as the meaning of the phenomenon. Both macroorganisms (such as animals, plants and mosses) and microorganisms (such as autotrophic or het- erotrophic bacteria, microfungi, cyanobacteria, algae and lichens) represent the trigge…

Adjuvant chemotherapy and relative survival of patients with stage II colon cancer - A EURECCA international comparison between the Netherlands, Denm…

2016

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present EURECCA international comparison is to compare adjuvant chemotherapy and relative survival of patients with stage II colon cancer between European countries.METHODS: Population-based national cohort data (2004-2009) from the Netherlands (NL), Denmark (DK), Sweden (SE), England (ENG), Ireland (IE), and Belgium (BE) were obtained, as well as single-centre data from Lithuania. All surgically treated patients with stage II colon cancer were included. The proportion of patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy was calculated and compared between countries. Besides, relative survival was calculated and compared between countries.RESULTS: Overall, 59,154 patients …

Altered distribution and function of splenic innate lymphoid cells in adult chronic immune thrombocytopenia

2018

IF 7.607; International audience; Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) have been characterized as innate immune cells capable to modulate the immune response in the mucosae. Human ILCs have been rarely described in secondary lymphoid organs except in tonsils. Moreover, their function and phenotype in human secondary lymphoid organs during autoimmune diseases have never been studied. We took advantage of splenectomy as a treatment of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) to describe and compare splenic ILC from 18 ITP patients to 11 controls. We first confirmed that ILC3 represented the most abundant ILC subset in human non-inflamed spleens, accounting for 90% of total ILC, and that they were mostly constit…

Birth Mode-Related Differences in Gut Microbiota Colonization and Immune System Development.

2018

<b><i>Background:</i></b> The process of early gut colonization is extremely variable among individuals and is influenced by numerous factors. Among these, the mode of birth will strongly shape the early microbial exposure and immune environment of the neonate. <b><i>Summary:</i></b> Here, I review how the concomitant processes of microbiota and immune system development are altered by C-section delivery and the effects of such alterations on long-term health. <b><i>Key messages:</i></b> C-section delivery impinges on microbiota and immune system development through various means: (i) if labor is lacking, intrauterine i…

Recombinant Ganoderma lucidum Immunomodulatory Protein Improves the Treatment for Chemotherapy-Induced Neutropenia

2020

Ganoderma lucidum, also known as LINGZHI, has a long tradition of use in folk medicine of the Far East, which is documented in the oldest Chinese pharmacopoeia, declaring it a superior medicine. LINGZHI-8 (LZ-8) is an immunoregulatory fungal protein isolated from the fruiting body of Ganoderma lucidum. Neutropenia is a condition with an abnormally low levels of neutrophils in the blood, which is caused by numerous medical conditions or medications, such as chemotherapy. The current study demonstrated that recombinant LZ-8 (rLZ-8) from Pichia promoted the differentiation of bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) into granulocytes in a neutropenia mouse model induced by cyclophosphamide.…

Fruit and vegetable consumption and health outcomes: an umbrella review of observational studies

2019

The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive evaluation of current evidence on fruit and vegetable consumption and health outcomes. A systematic search for quantitative syntheses was performed. Several criteria, including study design, dose-response relationship, heterogeneity and agreement of results over time, and identification of potential confounding factors, were used to assess the level of evidence. The strongest (probable) evidence was found for cardiovascular disease protection; possible evidence for decreased risk of colon cancer, depression and pancreatic diseases was found for fruit intake; and colon and rectal cancer, hip fracture, stroke, depression and pancreatic dise…

Novel Microglia Depletion Systems: A Genetic Approach Utilizing Conditional Diphtheria Toxin Receptor Expression and a Pharmacological Model Based on…

2019

Microglia are the main population of macrophage residing in the central nervous system (CNS). Depletion experiments gave important insights into the physiology and function of microglia in healthy and diseased CNS. Ablation of microglia can be achieved by application of pharmacological or genetic tools. Here, we describe two approaches to ablate microglia: an efficient genetic model that utilizes DTRMG mouse line that has diphtheria toxin receptor (DTR) expression regulated by the promoter activity of the fractalkine receptor (CX3CR1) gene, and a pharmacological model that utilizes the blocking of macrophage colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF-1R) with a blocking antibody. Both the ad…
