Suitability of Phytosterols Alongside Fatty Acids as Chemotaxonomic Biomarkers for Phytoplankton
2016
The composition and abundance of phytoplankton is an important factor defining ecological status of marine and freshwater ecosystems. Chemotaxonomic markers (e.g., pigments and fatty acids) are needed for monitoring changes in a phytoplankton community and to know the nutritional quality of seston for herbivorous zooplankton. Here we investigated the suitability of sterols along with fatty acids as chemotaxonomic markers using multivariate statistics, by analyzing the sterol and fatty acid composition of 10 different phytoplankton classes including altogether 37 strains isolated from freshwater lakes. We were able to detect a total of 47 fatty acids and 29 sterols in our phytoplankton sampl…
Introduction
2017
The book is devoted to three key questions concerning the relationship between complexity and natural language. Briefly, such questions are: (a) What kind of complexity for natural language? (b) Which theory of language in the perspective of complexity? (c) What sorts of methods and models in the analysis of the observed phenomena? All the essays in this volume show the reference to complexity as a constant element. However, the use of the singular may not be entirely appropriate.
Elemental composition of sediments from a former silver mine in Freiberg/East Germany
1999
Abstract We have determined the contents of 48 elements in 11 representative sediments from a former Ag-mine in Freiberg/Sachsen. As analytical method the instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was used without chemical preconcentration. Strongly varying compositions were observed for both the main and trace elements. Of particular interest were the high lanthanide and Th/U contents in these sediments.
Comparative GC-MS Analysis of Bay Leaf (Laurus nobilisL.) Essential Oils in Commercial Samples
2015
Chemical composition of Laurus nobilis essential oils traded as spice and medicinal items was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sixty-four compounds accounting between 91–99% of the total oil was identified. Qualitative and quantitative differences were found among essential oils obtained from bay leaves used both for cooking and medicinal purposes. The oxygenated compounds were the principal fraction in all analyzed oils and consisted in oxygenated monoterpenes (73.13%), in medicinal essential oil and oxygenated monoterpenes (37.60 and 29.82%), oxygenated sesquiterpenes (15.98 and 22.99%), and phenylpropanoids (24.78 and 26.33%), respectively, in commercial food items. A hi…
Volatiles in pantellerite magmas: A case study of the Green Tuff Plinian eruption (Island of Pantelleria, Italy)
2013
Abstract The Green Tuff (GT) Plinian eruption, the largest in magnitude at Pantelleria, erupted 3 to 7 km3 DRE of pantellerite magma and a small volume of trachyte. Fifty-nine anorthoclase-hosted melt inclusions from the two basal pumice members were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy in order to assess the pre-eruptive H2O content in the pantellerite melt. Microanalytical methods were used to determine major element, Cl, F and S contents. Melt inclusions and glassy groundmasses have a nearly homogeneous pantelleritic composition (peralkaline index = 1.9-2.2) and variable water contents ranging from 1.4 to as high as 4.2 wt %, i.e. much higher than the 1.4 wt % of earlier published studies. The…
Lavandula × intermedia—A Bastard Lavender or a Plant of Many Values? Part I. Biology and Chemical Composition of Lavandin
2023
This review article is the first in a series that provides an overview of the biology, chemistry, biological effects, and applications of Lavandula × intermedia (lavandin, LI). Despite its prevalence in cultivation and on the essential oil market, lavandin has received limited attention from the scientific community. Remarkably more attention is paid to Lavandula angustifolia (LA), which is commonly regarded as the superior lavender and has been extensively researched. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive review of LI, as none currently exists, and assess whether its inferior status is merited. In the first part, we outline the biological and chemical characteristics of the plant and comp…
The Diagnosis of Disease by Element Analysis
1988
The elemental composition of the human body images in principle the elements of the periodic system. In the literature, about 80 elements are reported to occur in the human body and the number is expected to increase by the introduction of methods more sensitive in detection. The elemental composition in reference man as published (1) is summarized in tab. 1. From the major elements in reference man, the determination of the elements nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chlorine and magnesium are of importance for the diagnosis of diseases. The importance of the element determination for the diagnosis of diseases is also documented by the numbers of element determinations done …
Raman spectroscopic study of some lead phosphate glasses with tungsten ions
2006
Abstract The structure of x WO 3 · (100 − x )[2P 2 O 5 · PbO] glass system with 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 50 mol% was investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The characteristic bands of these glasses due to the stretching and bending vibrations were identified and analyzed by the increasing of WO 3 content. This fact allowed us to identify the specific structural units which appear in these glasses and thus to point out the network modifier role of tungsten oxide for low concentrations and its former role at high concentrations.
Essential oil of Cyphostemma juttae (Vitaceae): Chemical composition and antitumor mechanism in triple negative breast cancer cells
2019
The genus Cyphostemma (Planch.) Alston (Vitaceae) includes about 150 species distrib- uted in eastern and southern Africa and Madagascar. Some species are used in traditional medicine and their biological activities, including antiproliferative effects against cancer cell lines, have been demonstrated. To date no investigations on Cyphostemma essential oils have been carried out. Essential oils, which play important roles in plant defenses have been demonstrated to be active in the treatment of several human diseases and to enhance bioavability of other drugs. The aim of this paper was to identify the chemical composition of the essential oil of the leaves of Cyphostemma juttae (Dinter &…
