How to minimise the effect of tumour cell content in detection of aberrant genetic markers in neuroblastoma
2011
Background: Clinical heterogeneity reflects the complexity of genetic events associated with neuroblastoma (NB). To identify the status of all described genetic loci with possible prognostic interest, high-throughput approaches have been used, but only with tumour cell content >60%. In some tumours, necrotic, haemorrhagic and/or calcification areas influence the low amount of neuroblasts. We evaluated the effect of tumour cell content in the detection of relevant aberrant genetic markers (AGM) diagnosed by fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) on tissue microarrays (TMA) in NB. Methods: Two hundred and thirty-three MYCN non-amplified primary NB included in 12 TMAs were analysed. Results…
Influence of grain quality, semolinas and baker’s yeast on bread made from old landraces and modern genotypes of Sicilian durum wheat
2021
Abstract Several studies showed that products made with ancient wheat genotypes have beneficial health properties compared to those obtained with modern wheat varieties, even though the mechanisms responsible for the positive effects are not clear. Ancient durum wheat genotypes are being currently used for the production of pasta, bread and other typical bakery products but the consumption is strictly local. In this work 15 genotypes of Triticum turgidum subsp. durum, including 10 ancient and 5 modern, were characterized for their technological traits through the determination of different parameters: protein content, dry gluten, gluten index, yellow index, ash, P/L, W and G. In addition, t…
Diversity of yeast strains of the genus Hanseniaspora in the winery environment: What is their involvement in grape must fermentation?
2015
Isolated yeast populations of Chardonnay grape must during spontaneous fermentation were compared to those isolated on grape berries and in a winery environment before the arrival of the harvest (air, floor, winery equipment) and in the air through time. Two genera of yeast, Hanseniaspora and Saccharomyces, were isolated in grape must and in the winery environment before the arrival of the harvest but not on grape berries. The genus Hanseniaspora represented 27% of isolates in the must and 35% of isolates in the winery environment. The isolates of these two species were discriminated at the strain level by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The diversity of these strains observed in t…
Soil Moisture Retrieved From a Combined Optical and Passive Microwave Approach
2016
Abstract With the current remote sensing technology developments, and in particular those at L-band (1.2–1.4 GHz) frequencies such as the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity and the Soil Moisture Active and Passive missions, new approaches concerning passive microwave and its combination with existing optical technologies have become of special interest for the estimation of surface soil moisture. One of these new approaches is the combination of optical and passive microwave data based on a semiempirical approach derived from the general radiative transfer equation. The objective of this chapter is to present some applications of the combined optical-passive microwave approaches over several …
Spatiotemporal Variations in the Abundance and Structure of Denitrifier Communities in Sediments Differing in Nitrate Content
2017
Spatial and temporal variations related to hydric seasonality in abundance and diversity of denitrifier communities were examined in sediments taken from two sites differing in nitrate concentration along a stream Doñ

2021
This article compares the communication strategies of party and candidate accounts on Instagram during the 2017 German federal election. Building upon previous research, we conceptualize how the di...
Seed cryopreservation of Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl
2016
Fraxinus angustifolia is used for afforestation and for production of both valuable timber and manna , a substance with pharmacological applications. The aim of this research was to establish the optimized condition for cryopreservation of F. angustifolia seeds, in order to protect the germplasm of this species. Germination percentage and mean time of germination of non-treated seeds (control) and liquid nitrogen-treated seeds were established in water or in 10 -6 M gibberellic acid (GA 3 ). The seeds could be cryopreserved with 3% of moisture content (MC) and germinated easily in water (70.0 ± 5.0%), while seeds cryopreserved with 6% MC showed a physiological dormancy. This state could be …
Evaluation of morphological and genetic diversity of loquat accessions grown in sicily
2015
In this study 20 accessions of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) that originated from Sicily and other countries were characterized phenotypically and genotyped using seven microsatellite markers. The microsatellites clearly distinguished 14 accessions; three pairs of local accessions were not differentiated, and three accessions from abroad can be considered bud sport mutations of the main Spanish cultivar âAlgerieâ. The mean alleles per locus was four, ranging from two with the marker EJ075 and five with EJ012 and EJ271; the mean Polymorphic Information Content was 0.53; the average expected and observed heterozygosities resulted 0.62 and 0.59, respectively. These values revealed a …
Everyday life in old age: past, present, and future
2018
Aims: To explore how older Norwegian women living at home experience ageing, and how their everyday life has been influenced by their encounters with the challenges of life. Methods: A qualitative design, interviewing ten women age 90 or older, was employed. Results: The overall theme of the findings is how everyday life in old age is influenced by past, present and future. The subcategories focus on (a) changes in daily life, (b) giving an account of life as it is, (c) various perceptions of experienced loss, and finally, (d) thoughts about the future. Conclusions: Older women need the opportunity to reflect upon their past, present and future existence to have a good everyday life in old …
Feriereise kan ha positiv innvirkning på pasienter med demenslidelse
2012
Published version of an article in the journal: Vård i Norden Aim. To gain knowledge about how a holiday trip to Spain with adapted cultural activities may affect a group of patients with dementia disorder. Background. With the increasing number of people suffering from dementia, it will be important to focus on activities that may affect well-beeing in this group. Method. A focus group interview was conducted with six healthcare workers, who participated in a trip to Spain together with six patients suffering from dementia. A qualitative content analysis was used. Findings. The findings were interpreted in one main theme: Close follow-up in unfamiliar environment and participation in adapt…
