Abstract Background and aims Growing evidence suggests that the metabolic syndrome (MetS) has both a genetic and environmental basis. To evaluate the possibility of a further genetic analysis, we estimated prevalence rates and heritabilities for the MetS and its individual traits in the adult population of Linosa, a small and isolated Italian Island in the southern-central part of the Mediterranean Sea. Abstract This paper presents the generalization to a three-dimensional (3D) case of a mechanically-based approach to non-local elasticity theory, recently proposed by the authors in a one-dimensional (1D) case. The proposed model assumes that the equilibrium of a volume element is attained by contact forces between adjacent elements and by long-range forces exerted by non-adjacent elements. Specifically, the long-range forces are modelled as central body forces depending on the relative displacement between the centroids of the volume elements, measured along the line connecting the centroids. Abstract We show that for a given bornology β on a Banach space X the following “ lim inf ” formula lim inf x ′ ⟶ C x T β ( C ; x ′ ) ⊂ T c ( C ; x ) holds true for every closed set C ⊂ X and any x ∈ C , provided that the space X × X is ∂ β -trusted. Here T β ( C ; x ) and T c ( C ; x ) denote the β-tangent cone and the Clarke tangent cone to C at x. The trustworthiness includes spaces with an equivalent β-differentiable norm or more generally with a Lipschitz β-differentiable bump function. As a consequence, we show that for the Frechet bornology, this “ lim inf ” formula characterizes in fact the Asplund property of X.
