The wild taxa utilized as vegetables in Sicily (Italy): a traditional component of the Mediterranean diet
2018
Background: Wild vegetables in the Mediterranean Basin are still often consumed as a part of the diet and, in particular, there is a great tradition regarding their use in Sicily. In this study, an ethnobotanical field investigation was carried out to (a) identify the wild native taxa traditionally gathered and consumed as vegetables in Sicily, comparing the collected ethnobotanical data with those of other countries that have nominated the Mediterranean diet for inclusion in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and (b) highlight new culinary uses of these plants. Methods: Interviews were carried out in 187 towns and villages in Sicily between 2005 an…
The role of the International Organization for Migration and the UNHCR in the EU and Italy: Still entrapped by a securitization approach to Mediterra…
2019
Mediterranean migration flows have been managed, so far, by revitalizing the traditional remits, such as border control, of the state. Recent years have seen the growth of nationalist parties, able to exploit migrant flows to expand their support. Rescue operations have also received widespread criticism from several other actors, instead others have expressed anxiety about the lack of concern, on the part of state representatives, for the humanitarian dimension of the phenomenon. The EU has not been able to act as a counterweight and has shown all the difficulties involved in enhancing solidarity and responsibility-sharing between member states. Moreover, there is a lack of mutual trust af…
Viva voce: Voice and Voicelessness among Twelfth-Century Clerics
2015
Writing in his Summa on Gratian’s Decretum1 toward 1164, canonist Rufinus of Bologna2 evokes criminal prelates, saying, “vocem accusandi, reprehendi, docendi non habent” (they do not have a voice to accuse, punish, teach).3 Should this enumeration be understood as a commonplace statement about three possible functions of the voice, or should we suspect a set of deeper associations? Is Rufinus’s use of the word “voice” simply an alternative to other rhetorical or stylistic possibilities—such as the word “word” in particular—or is it truly a deliberate choice on the part of the canonist?

2011
All processes experience periods of advance and recession. Now that feminism is relevant in so many spheres of political action around the world, be them local or international, and that translation is more than ever a recognized and valued instrument in political relations, this moment seems a good one to reflect on the state of the art of feminism within the translation world, in which it is already undeniable that politics and language are intertwined. Many are the questions that could be asked: Is feminist translation still an interesting field of study in Spain? Have theory and practice walked at the same pace in this area? Have Spanish translators committed to this cause changed their…
Nación, emoción y fantasía. La España melodramática de Ayguals de Izco = Nation, Emotion and Fantasy. Ayguals de Izco's Melodramatic Spain
2017
Another Baltic Postcolonialism: Young Latvians, Baltic Germans, and the emergence of Latvian National Movement
2014
This article looks at the emergence of Latvian nationalism in the mid-nineteenth century from the intercultural perspective of postcolonial theory. The writings of early Young Latvians, and the reaction to them from the dominant Baltic German elite, show that the emergence of a modern Latvian nationalism is to a large extent due to postcolonial mimicry, as described by Homi Bhabha. Attempts to imitate German cultural models and to develop a Latvian high culture lead to hostile reactions from the German side, which, in their turn, lead to increasing consolidation of Latvian nationalism. Since the Baltic German elite increasingly legitimized its rule in terms of cultural superiority, the Youn…
