How acute physical and psychological stress differentially influence the kynurenine pathway: A randomized cross-over trial.
2021
Abstract Psychological stress is associated with the pathogenesis of several neuropsychiatric disorders. In contrast, physical stress, as provoked by exercise, counteracts symptoms and potentially also disease progression. The kynurenine pathway, which is imbalanced in neuropsychiatric disorders, responds to both psychological and physical stress. Here, we compared the acute effects of psychological versus physical stress on the kynurenine pathway and inflammatory mediators. Thirty-five healthy males (mean age: 24.09±3.39 years) underwent both the Trier Social Stress Test (psychological stressor) and the Wingate-Test (physical stressor). The kinetics of tryptophan and its metabolites as wel…
Leptin and Leptin Receptor Are Expressed in the Human Endometrium and Endometrial Leptin Secretion Is Regulated by the Human Blastocyst1
2000
Embryonic implantation is a crucial event for the human reproductive function. Cytokines and paracrine molecules have been proposed as putative local regulators of this process. The leptin or the OB protein has been linked to the reproductive function and inflammatory response. In the present study, we describe for the first time the expression of leptin and leptin receptor (long form) in the secretory endometrium and that endometrial leptin secretion is regulated in vitro by the human blastocyst. Leptin and leptin receptor messenger RNA and protein were identified in secretory endometrium and in cultured endometrial epithelial cells (EECs) by RT-PCR, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry.…

Reply to Drs. Kiaei and Molinaro Regarding the Publication “Comparison of a Bridge Immunoassay with Two Bioassays for Thyrotropin Receptor Antibody D…
2020
Dear Editor,Drs. Kiaei and Molinaro 1 put forth two criticisms of the manuscript published by us 2. They state that the experimental design of this study is flawed and that the authors falsely claim that negative Thyretain™ TSI Reporter BioAssay results for two Graves’ diseases patients undergoing drug treatments means the absence of stimulating antibodies. To substantiate this claim Drs. Kiaei and Molinaro point out that the manufacturer of the Thyretain TSI Reporter BioAssay clearly states in the package insert that “[t]he effects of various drug therapies on the performance of this Kit have not been established” 1. Second, the package insert explicitly states that “[a] negative result do…

Adipokines and Lipoproteins: Modulation by Antihyperglycemic and Hypolipidemic Agents
2014
Abstract Adipose tissue is an endocrine organ that secretes a number of hormones and metabolically active substances that impact energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity. These inflammatory markers are collectively referred to as adipocytokines, or adipokines. Adipose tissue's functional capacity and metabolic activity vary among individuals, thus partly explaining the incomplete overlap between obesity and the metabolic syndrome. The functional failure of adipose tissues results in changed energy delivery and impaired glucose consumption, triggering self-regulatory mechanisms to maintain homeostasis. Antihyperglycemic, hypolipidemic, antiobesity, and angiotensin II receptor blocker drugs …
Does Systemic Low-Grade Inflammation Associate With Fat Accumulation and Distribution? A 7-Year Follow-Up Study With Peripubertal Girls
2014
Knowledge about the interrelationship between adiposity and systemic low-grade inflammation during pubertal growth is important in detecting early signs of obesity-related metabolic disorders. The objective of the study was to evaluate the developmental trajectories of fat mass (FM) and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels and factors that could explain the relationship between FM and hsCRP in girls from prepuberty to early adulthood. This was a 7.5-year longitudinal study. The study was conducted at the University of Jyväskylä Sports and Health Science laboratory.Three hundred ninety-six healthy Finnish girls aged 11.2 ± 0.8 years participated in the study.Body composition was ass…
Relationships between adipose tissues and brain: what do we learn from animal studies?
2010
International audience; Over the last decades, more and more data supporting the importance of the relationships between the brain and adipose tissues (white and brown) in regards of body weight regulation and energy homeostasis have been published. Indeed the brain via the autonomic nervous system participates to the regulation of different parameters such as the metabolic (lipolysis, lipogenesis and thermogeneis), and secretory (leptin and other adipokines) activities but also plasticity (proliferation differentiation and apoptosis) of adipose tissues. In turn the various fat pads will send information via sensory innervation of white adipose tissue as well as metabolic and hormonal signa…
MUSCLE BIOENERGETICS IN OBESE ZUCKER RATS
1994
International audience; Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the energetic metabolism in obese Zucker rats, using phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy at rest and during a 2-Hz muscle stimulation and subsequent recovery. Animals were anesthetized with ketamine (150 mg/kg ip). Fed obese rats and 2-day-fasted obese rats were compared with their normally fed and 2-day-fasted lean litter mates. No differences were found between the two groups for ATP, total creatine, phosphocreatine (PCr), and intracellular pH. Starvation in lean rats resulted in a significant fall in inorganic phosphate (Pi), increased resting ADP level, and decreased PCr and ADP recovery after …
