Hybrid multiple diffraction in semipolar wurtzite materials: (\bf 01\overline{1}2)-oriented ZnMgO/ZnO heterostructures as an illustration

2017

X-ray diffraction has been widely used to characterize the structural properties (strain and structural quality) of semiconductor heterostructures. This work employs hybrid multiple diffraction to analyzer-oriented Zn1−xMgxO layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on ZnO substrates. In such a low-symmetry material system, additional features appear in symmetric reflection scans, which are described as arising from hybrid multiple diffraction. First, the Bragg conditions necessary for these high-order processes to occur are introduced and applied to explain all the observed satellite reflections, identify the planes that contribute and computea priorithe angles at which they are observed. Fur…

Brain lateralization probed by water diffusion at the atomic to micrometric scale

2019

International audience; Combined neutron scattering and diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance experiments have been used to reveal significant interregional asymmetries (lateralization) in bovine brain hemispheres in terms of myelin arrangement and water dynamics at micron to atomic scales. Thicker myelin sheaths were found in the left hemisphere using neutron diffraction. 4.7 T dMRI and quasi-elastic neutron experiments highlighted significant differences in the properties of water dynamics in the two hemispheres. The results were interpreted in terms of hemisphere-dependent cellular composition (number of neurons, cell distribution, etc.) as well as specificity of neurological functions (s…

Solid state conformational behavior and interactions of a series of aromatic oligoamide foldamers

2016

The topic of this thesis is aromatic oligoamide foldamers. The literary review of the thesis discusses the general features of foldamers and their design and then focuses on the specific examples of aromatic oligoamide foldamers. The experimental part of the thesis discusses the design and preparation of a family of aromatic oligoamide foldamers that can adopt a helical conformation. The folding is directed by intramolecular hydrogen bonding and stabilized by intramolecular aromatic interactions. The focus of the thesis is the analysis of the solid state conformations of ten foldamer analogues. The analysis is based on forty different crystal structures which are determined using single cry…

On the biosynthesis of cellulose in higher and lower plants

2007

Kinetic experiments on cotton cellulose and cellulose from the alga Valonia show, that the degree of polymerization during the biosynthesis of the secondary wall is independent of conversion and reaction conditions. During the whole synthesis period it remains constant at a DPw ∼ 13,000 for cotton and 16,500 for Valonia, respectively. Fractionation experiments indicate complete uniformity of the degree of polymerization at every stage of the biosynthesis. This means that the biosynthesis of secondary wall cellulose for both higher and lower plants must be a structure-controlled process and not a time-controlled one. Contrary to this evidence the synthesis of primary wall cellulose takes pla…

Tailoring Third-Harmonic Diffraction Efficiency by Hybrid Modes in High-Q Metasurfaces

2021

Metasurfaces are versatile tools for manipulating light; however, they have received little attention as devices for the efficient control of nonlinearly diffracted light. Here, we demonstrate nonlinear wavefront control through third-harmonic generation (THG) beaming into diffraction orders with efficiency tuned by excitation of hybrid Mie-quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC) modes in a silicon metasurface. Simultaneous excitation of the high-Q collective Mie-type modes and quasi-BIC modes leads to their hybridization and results in a local electric field redistribution. We probe the hybrid mode by measuring far-field patterns of THG and observe the strong switching between (0,-1) and…

Material quality characterization of CdZnTe substrates for HgCdTe epitaxy

2006

Cd1−xZnxTe (CZT) substrates were studied to investigate their bulk and surface properties. Imperfections in CZT substrates affect the quality of Hg1−xCdxTe (MCT) epilayers deposited on them and play a role in limiting the performance of infrared (IR) focal plane arrays. CZT wafers were studied to investigate their bulk and surface properties. Transmission and surface x-ray diffraction techniques, utilizing both a conventional closed-tube x-ray source as well as a synchrotron radiation source, and IR transmission micro-spectroscopy, were used for bulk and surface investigation. Synchrotron radiation offers the capability to combine good spatial resolution and shorter exposure times than conv…

The Structural Diversity of Benzofuran Resorcinarene Leads to Enhanced Fluorescence

2014

An unexpected and previously unknown resorcinarene mono-crown with a fused benzofuran moiety in its macrocyclic core was obtained as a byproduct from a bridging reaction of tetramethoxy resorcinarene with tetraethylene glycol ditosylate. The formation of the fused benzofuran moiety in the resorcinarene macrocycle resulted in a unique rigid and puckered boat conformation, as shown by XRD studies in the solid state. Modification of the macrocycle was also observed to affect the photophysical properties in solution by enhancing the fluorescence brightness compared with a conventional resorcinarene macrocycle. The fluorescent properties enabled unique detection of structural features, that is, …

Pseudopeptidic ligands: exploring the self-assembly of isophthaloylbisglycine (H2IBG) and divalent metal ions.

2012

We present a systematic study of the complexation of the new pseudopeptidic ligand isophthaloylbisglycine (H(2)IBG) with divalent metal ions of varying ionic radius. This work represents the initial employment of H(2)IBG in the coordination chemistry of alkaline earth, 3d transition, Zn(II) and Cd(II) metal elements. Infrared, NMR, thermal, magnetic, adsorption and theoretical studies of these compounds are also discussed.

Pressure-Induced Polymerization of Polycyclic Arene-Perfluoroarene Cocrystals: Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction Studies, Reaction Kinetics, and Desig…

2020

Pressure-induced polymerization of aromatic compounds leads to novel materials containing sp3 carbon-bonded networks. The choice of the molecular species and the control of their arrangement in the crystal structures via intermolecular interactions, such as the arene–perfluoroarene interaction, can enable the design of target polymers. We have investigated the crystal structure compression and pressure-induced polymerization reaction kinetics of two polycyclic 1:1 arene–perfluoroarene cocrystals, naphthalene/octafluoronaphthalene (NOFN) and anthracene/octafluoronaphthalene (AOFN), up to 25 and 30 GPa, respectively, using single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, a…

Studies of the Ca4Mn3O10structure obtained using high pressure and high temperature

2002

An ideal n = 3 member of the group of Ruddlesden?Popper (RP) phases Ca4Mn3O10 was obtained by solid-state reaction under high pressure. This phase has been studied by transmission electron microscopy, convergent beam electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and parallel electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The lattice parameters are derived as a = b = 0.37 nm and c = 2.69 nm with the space group I4/mmm, which is the space group of the ideal RP phase.
