Performance of coded modulation employing differential encoding over Rayleigh fading channels

1999

Multilevel coding and bit-interleaved coded modulation employing differential encoding and non-coherent reception over flat fading channels are assessed. To achieve high bandwidth efficiencies mixed amplitude/phase modulation is performed. It is shown that multiple symbol detection only provides gains for multilevel coding as Gray labelling of the differential symbols is not possible.

Identification of a specific type of PD from acoustic emission frequency spectra

2001

The paper presents an attempt to apply spectral analysis tools in processing acoustic emission (AE) pulses generated by partial discharge (FD). The experimental part of the paper describes spark gaps generating four types of PD and specifies parameters of measured acoustic signals and recalls the system used for measurement and analysis of the frequency spectra. Also, a spectral analysis procedure is presented, and frequency-domain descriptors characterizing AE pulses are defined. The results of the analysis are given both as time plots and amplitude and energy density spectra, related to values of the associated descriptors. The spectral analysis results cover AE pulses generated in system…

Affinity Sensors for the Diagnosis of COVID-19

2021

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was proclaimed a global pandemic in March 2020. Reducing the dissemination rate, in particular by tracking the infected people and their contacts, is the main instrument against infection spreading. Therefore, the creation and implementation of fast, reliable and responsive methods suitable for the diagnosis of COVID-19 are required. These needs can be fulfilled using affinity sensors, which differ in applied detection methods and markers that are generating analytical signals. Recently, nucleic acid hybridization, antigen-antibody interaction, and change of reactive oxyge…

Selection and characterization of adsorbents for the analysis of an explosive-related molecule traces in the air

2013

International audience; This study is focused on the development of a 3D micro-preconcentrator for a sensitive analysis of an explosive-related compound: orthonitrotoluene (ONT). A set of potentially efficient adsorbents for the pre-concentration of ONT was investigated here. An in-depth characterization of their textural properties was carried out in order to better understand their adsorption behavior toward the target analyte. More particularly, this study allowed highlighting the interesting adsorption features of a hydrophobic zeolite and a porous activated carbon in relation to their preconcentration performances toward ONT at the ppb level. Moreover, we found a difference in the adso…

Experimental Study of the Oriented Immobilization of Antibodies on Photonic Sensing Structures by Using Protein A as an Intermediate Layer

2018

[EN] A proper antibody immobilization on a biosensor is a crucial step in order to obtain a high sensitivity to be able to detect low target analyte concentrations. In this paper, we present an experimental study of the immobilization process of antibodies as bioreceptors on a photonic ring resonator sensor. A protein A intermediate layer was created on the sensor surface in order to obtain an oriented immobilization of the antibodies, which enhances the interaction with the target antigens to be detected. The anti-bovine serum albumin (antiBSA)-bovine serum albumin (BSA) pair was used as a model for our study. An opto-fluidic setup was developed in order to flow the different reagents and,…

Highly Sensitive Detection of Naphthalene in Solvent Vapor Using a Functionalized PBG Refractive Index Sensor

2012

We report an optical refractive index sensor system based on a planar Bragg grating which is functionalized by substituted γ-cyclodextrin to determine low concentrations of naphthalene in solvent vapor. The sensor system exhibits a quasi-instantaneous shift of the Bragg wavelength and is therefore capable for online detection. The overall shift of the Bragg wavelength reveals a linear relationship to the analyte concentration with a gradient of 12.5 ± 1.5 pm/ppm. Due to the spectral resolution and repeatability of the interrogation system, this corresponds to acquisition steps of 80 ppb. Taking into account the experimentally detected signal noise a minimum detection limit of 0.48 ± 0.05 pp…

Electrochemical pH Control at Gold Nanowires

2018

In this work, interdigitated arrays of nanowire electrodes are used with one array acting as the working electrode while the other is used to generate the required protons. Finite element simulations of the pH control electrodes were performed to provide insight on the generation and subsequent diffusion of protons. This informed the inter-tine spacing of the electrodes used.. This electrochemical pH control method was then used to enable the detection of analytes of interest.

A Paradigm Interpreting the City and the Analytic Network Process for the Management of Urban Transformations

2018

When urban and environmental transformations occur in areas where the equilibrium between nature and culture is complex and fragile, public ad-ministrations could decide to induce private investments using several tools, such as financial contributions to those projects of refurbishment that better re-spect the purpose of improving the environmental quality and of preserving the local architecture. Multicriteria models may support public decision process re-garding this issue, but it is essential to adopt a scientific paradigm that provides a major theoretical reference. This study proposes the development of a net-work model based on the scientific paradigm by Rizzo and the Analytic Net-wo…

Transmembrane electrochemistry of erythrocytes: Direct electrochemical test for detecting hemolysis in whole blood

2016

A rapid method for detecting hemolysis in whole blood based on a direct electrochemical assay either in venous blood and finger blood, respectively at glassy carbon and screen-printed graphite electrodes is described. The presence of hemolysis is detected from characteristic voltammetric signatures associated to Fe-heme units in healthy and hemolyzed erythrocytes. The voltammetric response of blood was also investigated using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and involved transmembrane electrochemistry of erythrocytes superimposed to molecular electrochemistry of heme-containing proteins and heme fragments in the plasma. Voltammetric testing …
