Semidilute and Concentrated Polymer Solutions near Attractive Walls: Dynamic Monte Carlo Simulation of Density and Pressure Profiles of a Coarse-Gra…
1997
Using a bead−spring model of flexible polymer chains, we study polymer adsorption from solutions onto attractive planar walls, varying both the strength of the adsorption potential e and the concentration of the solution over a wide range. Treating the case of good solvents, the profiles of density and pressure are computed and it is shown that thermal equilibrium between the adsorbed layer and the bulk solution is obtained. The case of a wall with purely repulsive potential under otherwise identical conditions is treated for comparison. It is shown that for the strongly adsorbing wall there is a pronounced layering, while a layered structure at the repulsive wall occurs only for high conce…
ChemInform Abstract: Benzoxetes and Benzothietes - Heterocyclic Analogues of Benzocyclobutene
2012
Benzo-condensed four-ring heterocycles, such as benzoxetes 1 and benzothietes 3 represent multi-purpose starting compounds for the preparation of various higher heterocyclic ring systems. The thermal or photochemical valence isomerizations between the benzenoid forms 1,3 and the higher reactive o-quinoid structures 2,4 provide the basis for the synthetic applications. On the other hand, this valence isomerization impedes in particular the generation and storage of 1 because the thermal equilibrium 1 2 is completely on the side of 2. Thus, the number of erroneous or questionable benzoxete structures published to date is surprisingly high. On the contrary, the thermal equilibrium 3 4 is on th…
Experimental and estimated saturated vapour pressures of aroma compounds
1999
Abstract The saturated vapour pressure of d-linalool, 2-nonanone, d-limonene and isoamyl acetate were measured using a static method at different temperatures from 223 to 468 K. From the experimental values, Antoine's constants were determined to enable the calculations of the saturated vapour pressures at a given temperature. The saturated vapour pressure of the four aroma compounds at 298 K were respectively 27, 59, 200 and 733 Pa. These results were compared with those obtained using different estimation methods (Antoine–Grain, Watson, Lee–Kesler, Gomez–Thodos, Grain and Mackay). Gomez–Thodos' model was found to be the most accurate method for the estimation of the saturated vapour press…
Isobaric Vapor−Liquid Equilibrium for Ethanol + Water + Strontium Nitrate
1996
Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibrium for ethanol (1) + water (2) + potassium nitrate (3) at various concentrations of salt and with ethanol mole fractions from 0 to 0.642 has been measured at 100.0 kPa. The results were correlated by assuming that the salt was in ionic form and it was associated only with the water.
Vapor−Liquid Equilibrium of Binary Mixtures of Tetrachloroethylene with 1-Pentanol, 3-Methyl-1-butanol, and 2-Methyl-1-butanol
1999
Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibria have been obtained for the systems tetrachloroethylene + 1-pentanol, tetrachloroethylene + 3-methyl-1-butanol, and tetrachloroethylene + 2-methyl-1-butanol, using a...
Correlation between Cognition and Balance among Middle-Aged and Older Adults Observed through a Tai Chi Intervention program
2020
Background: Age-associated decline in cognition and balance may cause severe ability loss for daily living activities among middle-aged and older adults. The relationship between cognition and balance in this aging population remains to be explored. Objective: The present study Is exploratory in nature and aimed to examine the relationship between balance (both static and dynamic components) and global cognitive function among middle-aged and older adults through Tai Chi (TC) practice as a research avenue. Methods: A short-term (12 weeks) intervention of TC was conducted among middle-aged and older adults in the community setting. Global cognitive function (using the Chinese version of the …

Numerical and Experimental Study of Friction Loss in Hydrostatic Motor
2012
Published version of an article in the journal: Modeling, Identification and Control. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4173/mic.2012.3.2 Open access This paper presents a numerical and experimental study of the losses in a hydrostatic motor principle. The motor is designed so that the structural deflections and lubricating regimes between moving surfaces and, subsequently, the leakage and friction losses, can be controlled during operation. This is done by means of additional pressure volumes that influence the stator deflection. These pressures are referred to as compensation pressures and the main emphasis is on friction or torque loss modeling of the motor as a …

NASH EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITHMS: TESTING PROBLEM SIZE IN RECONSTRUCTION PROBLEMS IN FRAME STRUCTURES
2016
The use of evolutionary algorithms has been enhanced in recent years for solving real engineering problems, where the requirements of intense computational calculations are needed, especially when computational engineering simulations are involved (use of finite element method, boundary element method, etc). The coupling of game-theory concepts in evolutionary algorithms has been a recent line of research which could enhance the efficiency of the optimum design procedure and the quality of the design solutions achieved. They have been applied in several fields of engineering and sciences, mainly, in aeronautical and structural engineering (e.g: in computational fluid dynamics and solid mech…
