La scuola di architettura di Palermo, sin dalla sua fondazione nel 1779, con la creazione della cattedra di Architettura civile affidata a Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia, era divenuta inevitabilmente il luogo di verifica e talvolta di esplorazione dei temi legati alla pratica professionale e, quindi, all’arte del costruire. The School of Architecture of Palermo since its founding in 1779 with the creation of the chair of Civil Architecture entrusted to Joseph Venantius Marvuglia has become the place of testing exploration of issues related to professional practice and the art of building. Carlo Giachery Professor of Static and Civil Architecture from 1837 to 1865 is the first to feel the deep crisis of the educational system of the school of architecture of Palermo. For him architecture and applied sciences to architecture found in their stereotomy confirmation of the existence of correspondent relationships in their evolutionary process. The projects prepared for "Palermo South-East" are the result of a Graduate Laboratory structured through meetings seminars specialist communications critical exhibitions which - in a shared strategy - saw each student elaborate their work in comparison with others actors of the same Laboratory. The research on "urban projects" was set so that each graduating student was made aware of the projects carried out in the same geographical area by the colleagues who had preceded it so as to be able to operate in continuity and contribute to formulating a unitary reasoning in which each project constituted continuation verification or even variant of the previous ones. These coordinated works have pursued two fundamental objectives: the strengthening of infrastructures and the establishment of specialized public buildings with superior functions aimed at requalifying and regenerating various critical situations with particular attention to the relationship between context and life scenarios. Thus each designer while dealing with a main functional program simultaneously deals with various issues such as the rationalization of the road system the redevelopment of existing buildings the design and refunctionalization of urban services (for example the transformed Central Station in the hotel or the project of a great Mosque)several degree theses have addressed as the main theme or as a question in the background the design of a new bed for the Oreto river and the relative establishment of a park facing it. In this desire to "patch up the wounds" in the different areas of "Palermo South-East" in close relationship with the vicissitudes of the place there is a continuous reference to architectures of all time and some questions involving the functional program are suggested - that identifies the character (or perhaps "type") of what is to be inserted in a given context - and the qualities of living reality as a pivotal material in the design process.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana

COX-2 expression in chondrosarcoma: A role for celecoxib treatment?

Chondrosarcomas are resistant to conventional chemo- and radiotherapy. A subset of chondrosarcomas arises secondarily in the benign tumour syndromes enchondromatosis (EC) and multiple osteochondromas (MO), and prevention of tumour development would greatly improve prognosis. We therefore investigated the effect of selective COX-2 inhibition on chondrosarcoma growth. COX-2 expression was studied in central- and peripheral cartilaginous tumours. The effect of COX-2 inhibition was assessed in four high-grade chondrosarcoma cell lines using celecoxib and NS-398 treatment.
