CEO satisfaction and intended strategic changes
2018
How do CEOs react to attainment discrepancies in their organizations' performance? Scholars have generally argued that (only) when performance falls below a certain aspiration level do CEOs intend to change the organization's strategy. However, empirical evidence on this issue is ambiguous and inconclusive. We address this puzzle directly by studying how CEOs' cognitive interpretations of performance (their satisfaction with the firm's performance) affect the magnitude of intended strategic changes, and we explore the moderating effect of the context (performance compared to the industry) on this relationship. Using a sample of medium-sized organizations, we find that CEOs' satisfaction wit…
Invited commentary: Differential learning is different from contextual interference learning.
2016
There has been renewed interest in the detailed structure of what is learned and the boundary conditions that foster motor learning. The accompanying article by Hossner et al. (2016), particularly their findings about augmented feedback in the context of different levels of additional noise, is consistent with this focus. Unfortunately, the findings from Hossner and colleagues appear to be based on incorrect interpretations of the differential learning (DL) approach. Essential discrepancies in the experimental conditions suggest the basis for the deviating results obtained in comparison to those of the original DL experiments. In this comment, it is also shown that the author's assumptions …

A novel dynamic multi-model relevance feedback procedure for content-based image retrieval
2016
This paper deals with the problem of image retrieval in large databases with a big semantic gap by a relevance feedback procedure. We present a novel algorithm for modelling the users's preferences in the content-based image retrieval system. The proposed algorithm considers the probability of an image belonging to the set of those sought by the user, and estimates the parameters of several local logistic regression models whose inputs are the low-level image features. A Principal Component Analysis method is applied to the original vector to reduce its high dimensionality. The relevance probabilities predicted by these local models are combined by means of a weighted average. These weights …
Frequency domain control based on quantitative feedback theory for vibration suppression in structures equipped with magnetorheological dampers
2009
This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in Smart Materials and Structures. IOP Publishing Ltd is not responsible for any errors or omissions in this version of the manuscript or any version derived from it. The definitive publisher authenticated version is available online at http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/0964-1726/18/9/095041 This paper addresses the problem of designing quantitative feedback theory (QFT) based controllers for the vibration reduction in a structure equipped with an MR damper. In this way, the controller is designed in the frequency domain and the natural frequencies of the structure can be directly accounted for in the process. T…
Robust tool point control for offshore knuckle boom crane
2011
Author's version of a chapter in the book: Proceedings of the 18th IFAC World Congress 2011. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.3182/20110828-6-IT-1002.03004 This paper considers the design of an H∞ controller for tool point control of a hydraulically actuated knuckle boom crane. The paper describes the modelling of the crane's mechanical and hydraulic systems and a disturbance model. These are linearised and combined in a state-space model used for the controller design. The controller synthesis problem is to design (if possible) an admissible controller that solves the problem of robust regulation against step inputs with an H∞ constraint based on the internal mode…
Robust H∞ sliding mode control with pole placement for a fluid power electrohydraulic actuator (EHA) system
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-014-5910-8 In this paper, we exploit the sliding mode control problem for a fluid power electrohydraulic actuator (EHA) system. To characterize the nonlinearity of the friction, the EHA system is modeled as a linear system with a system uncertainty. Practically, it is assumed that the system is also subject to the load disturbance and the external noise. An integral sliding mode controller is proposed to design. The advanced techniques such as the H ∞ control and the regional pole placement are employed to derive t…
The Voyage of Metals in the Universe from Cosmological to Planetary Scales: the need for a Very High-Resolution, High Throughput Soft X-ray Spectrome…
2019
Metals form an essential part of the Universe at all scales. Without metals we would not exist, and the Cosmos would look completely different. Metals are primarily born through nuclear processes in stars. They leave their cradles through winds or explosions, and then start their journey through space. This can lead them in and out of astronomical objects on all scales, ranging from comets, planets, stars, entire galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies to the largest structures of the Universe. Their wanderings are fundamental in determining how these objects, and the entire universe, evolve. In addition, their bare presence can be used to trace what these structures look like. The scope …
A Public Barrier Tracker to Support the Web Accessibility Directive
2018
In this paper we propose the Public Barrier Tracker (PBT) – a comprehensive solution that supports both filing and handling of user feedback on web accessibility. We give an overview of some existing approaches for gathering user feedback on accessibility barriers and outline the PBT functionality. The PBT can also offer further support for the implementation of the WAD: The collected data could be useful for monitoring and reporting as well as the enforcement mechanism.
