A Network Formation Game Approach to Study BitTorrent Tit-for-Tat

The Tit-for-Tat strategy implemented in BitTorrent (BT) clients is generally considered robust to selfish behaviours. The authors of [1] support this belief studying how Tit-for-Tat can affect selfish peers who are able to set their upload bandwidth. They show that there is a "good" Nash Equilibrium at which each peer uploads at the maximum rate. In this paper we consider a different game where BT clients can change the number of connections to open in order to improve their performance. Bright hot impacts by erupted fragments falling back on the Sun: UV redshifts in stellar accretion

A solar eruption after a flare on 7 Jun 2011 produced EUV-bright impacts of fallbacks far from the eruption site, observed with the Solar Dynamics Observatory. These impacts can be taken as a template for the impact of stellar accretion flows. Broad red-shifted UV lines have been commonly observed in young accreting stars. Here we study the emission from the impacts in the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly's UV channels and compare the inferred velocity distribution to stellar observations. We model the impacts with 2D hydrodynamic simulations. We find that the localised UV 1600A emission and its timing with respect to the EUV emission can be explained by the impact of a cloud of fragments. The …

Conflict and segregation in networks: An experiment on the interplay between individual preferences and social influence

We examine the interplay between a person's individual preference and the social influence others exert. We provide a model of network relationships with conflicting preferences, where individuals are better off coordinating with those around them, but where not all have a preference for the same action. We test our model in an experiment, varying the level of conflicting preferences between individuals. Our findings suggest that preferences are more salient than social influence, under conflicting preferences: subjects relate mainly with others who have the same preferences. In this paper, we construct new deformations of the Akhmediev-Peregrine (AP) breather of order N (or APN breather) with real parameters. Other families of quasirational solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation are obtained. We evaluate the highest amplitude of the modulus of the AP breather of order N; we give the proof that the highest amplitude of the APN breather is equal to . We get new formulas for the solutions of the NLS equation, which are different from these already given in previous works. Breathers and solitons of generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations as degenerations of algebro-geometric solutions

We present new solutions in terms of elementary functions of the multi-component nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations and known solutions of the Davey-Stewartson equations such as multi-soliton, breather, dromion and lump solutions. These solutions are given in a simple determinantal form and are obtained as limiting cases in suitable degenerations of previously derived algebro-geometric solutions. In particular we present for the first time breather and rational breather solutions of the multi-component nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations.

The angle of repose of spherical grains in granular Hele-Shaw cells: A molecular dynamics study

We report the results of three dimensional molecular dynamic simulations on the angle of repose of a sandpile formed by pouring mono-sized cohesionless spherical grains into a granular Hele-Shaw cell. In particular, we are interested to investigate the effects of those variables which may impact significantly on pattern formation of granular mixtures in Hele-Shaw cells. The results indicate that the frictional forces influence remarkably the formation of pile on the grain level.
