Design, modeling, and simulation of a photovoltaic water pumping system

2018

Electric pumps cannot be fed in those areas where they are not connected to the electric public distribution grid. In those areas, it is useful to feed electric pumps by means of the electricity generated from renewable energy sources plants. Among these, the Solar Water Pumping Systems feed electric pump thanks to the electricity generated by a photovoltaic plant. In this paper, a whole SWPS is fully designed, modelled, and simulated in Matlab environment. The proposed implementation is an useful tool for SWPS testing.

A BMA Analysis to Assess the Urbanization and Climate Change Impact on Urban Watershed Runoff

2016

Abstract A reliable planning of urban drainage systems aimed at the mitigation of flooding, should take into account the possible change over time of impervious cover in the urban watershed and of the climate features. The present study proposes a methodology to analyze the changing in runoff response for a urban watershed accounting several plausible future states of new urbanization and climate. To this aim, several models simulating the evolution scenario of impervious watershed area and of climate change were adopted. However, it is known that an evolution scenario represents only one of all possible occurrence and it is not necessary the true future state, therefore it is needed to fin…

Critical analysis of thermal inertia approaches for surface soil water content retrieval

2013

The “thermal inertia” method to retrieve surface soil water content maps on bare or sparsely-vegetated soils is analysed. The study area is a small experimental watershed, where optical and thermal images (in day and night time) and in situ data were simultaneously acquired. The sensitivity of thermal inertia to the phase difference between incoming radiation and soil temperature is demonstrated. Thus, to obtain an accurate value of the phase difference, the temporal distance between thermographs using a three-temperature approach is evaluated. We highlight when a cosine correction of the temperature needs to be applied, depending on whether the thermal inertia formulation includes two gene…

OpenMolcas: From Source Code to Insight

2019

In this article we describe the OpenMolcas environment and invite the computational chemistry community to collaborate. The open-source project already includes a large number of new developments realized during the transition from the commercial MOLCAS product to the open-source platform. The paper initially describes the technical details of the new software development platform. This is followed by brief presentations of many new methods, implementations, and features of the OpenMolcas program suite. These developments include novel wave function methods such as stochastic complete active space self-consistent field, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods, and hybrid multico…

In vitro optical performance of a new aberration-free intraocular lens

2014

To assess the optical performance of the new EnVista intraocular lens (IOL). Four aspheric IOLs were evaluated; the new EnVista is one amoung them. This IOL, similarly to the Z-Flex HB and the Bi-Flex 1.8 667AB ones, has a neutral aspheric design, whereas the fourth IOL under test (AcrySof IQ IOL SN60WF) presents a negative spherical aberration (SA). The IOL’s aberration patterns were measured in vitro, by setting them up on an optical bench. From these aberration-pattern data, the modulation transfer function (MTF), the average modulation values, and the points spread function (PSF) were calculated. Furthermore, in order to assess the potential optical quality that these IOLs would yield o…

Turing instability and traveling fronts for a nonlinear reaction–diffusion system with cross-diffusion

2012

In this work we investigate the phenomena of pattern formation and wave propagation for a reaction–diffusion system with nonlinear diffusion. We show how cross-diffusion destabilizes uniform equilibrium and is responsible for the initiation of spatial patterns. Near marginal stability, through a weakly nonlinear analysis, we are able to predict the shape and the amplitude of the pattern. For the amplitude, in the supercritical and in the subcritical case, we derive the cubic and the quintic Stuart–Landau equation respectively. When the size of the spatial domain is large, and the initial perturbation is localized, the pattern is formed sequentially and invades the whole domain as a travelin…

In vitro optical performance of nonrotational symmetric and refractive-diffractive aspheric multifocal intraocular lenses: impact of tilt and decentr…

2012

Purpose To evaluate the optical quality of Acrysof Restor SN6AD1 refractive–diffractive +3.00 D and Lentis Mplus LS-312 nonrotational symmetric +3.00 D aspheric multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) and analyze the effect of tilt and decentration. Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, and University of Murcia, Murcia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods An artificial model eye was used to measure wavefront aberrations of both IOL models. The modulation transfer function (MTF) and point-spread function (PSF) were calculated for a 5.0 mm pupil and under 5 situations: centered, 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm decentered, and 2 degrees and 4 degrees tilted. Results The refractive–diffractive IOL had…

Experimental validation of a customized phase mask designed to enable efficient computational optical sectioning microscopy through wavefront encodin…

2017

In this paper, wavefront-encoded (WFE) computational optical sectioning microscopy (COSM) using a fabricated square cubic (SQUBIC) phase mask, designed to render the system less sensitive to depth-induced aberration, is investigated. The WFE-COSM system is characterized by a point spread function (PSF) that does not vary as rapidly with imaging depth compared to the conventional system. Thus, in WFE-COSM, image restoration from large volumes can be achieved using computationally efficient space-invariant (SI) algorithms, thereby avoiding the use of depth-variant algorithms. The fabricated SQUBIC phase mask was first evaluated and found to have a 75% fidelity compared to the theoretical desi…

Development of Slewing Mirror Telescope Optical System for the UFFO-pathfinder

2013

The Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) is the UV/optical telescope of UFFO-pathfinder. The SMT optical system is a Ritchey-Chretien (RC) telescope of 100 mm diameter pointed by means of a gimbal-mounted flat mirror in front of the telescope. The RC telescope has a 17 × 17arcmin2 in Field of View and 4.3 arcsec resolution (full width half maximum of the point spread function) The beam-steering mirror enables the SMT to access a 35 × 35degree region and point and settle within 1 sec. All mirrors were fabricated to about 0.02 wavelengths RMS in wave front error (WFE) and 84.7% average reflectivity over 200 nm ~ 650 nm. The RC telescope was aligned to 0.05 wavelengths RMS in WFE (test wavelength 63…

Tolerance to rotation of toric monofocal and bifocal intraocular lenses. A theoretical study

2018

Abstract This manuscript aims to evaluate the tolerance to rotation of a toric monofocal and a toric bifocal intraocular lenses with different cylinder powers. Theoretical designs based on wavefront aberrations were created to simulate a toric monofocal and a toric bifocal intraocular lens. Cylinder power ranged from −1 D to −6 D, in steps of −1 D. Tolerance to rotation was estimated by the visual Strehl ratio based on the optical transfer function (VSOTF) metric. Tolerance to rotation for both monofocal and bifocal intraocular lenses decreased when the cylinder power increased. For the bifocal design studied, the tolerance to rotation was larger for the near focus than for the far, however…
