Valorization of low value fisheries species in Sicily (Italy), by realization of functional food: a case study of high technological readiness level
2016
The growing demand for fish products of safe and local origin and the need to reduce fishing on target species, requires continuous diversification in the seafood industry, to meet the needs of consumers. One solution is represented by the use of surplus species of local fisheries, of little commercial value and often ignored by the consumer, which, if subjected to new preservation and processing methodologies, allow to create new product categories, which open up new market opportunities. In our study, we setup and applied, on some local surplus fisheries species from western Sicily, some processing technologies, aimed to valorize and extend the shelf life of fish products: the cold smokin…
Periodontal health in a population with Parkinson's disease in Spain: a cross-sectional study.
2022
Background: The aim of this research is to evaluate the periodontal health of patients with Parkinson Disease (PD) in a Spanish cohort. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 104 patients with PD (mean age: 66.19+9.3 years) and 106 controls (mean age: 59.26+14.11 years). A pre-designed clinical protocol was implemented, which included a standardized epidemiological index for periodontal disease (CPITN), clinical attachment loss (CAL), tooth-loss, full mouth plaque index (FMPI), and oral hygienic habits. Univariate descriptions and comparative analysis were performed. Results: The majority of PD patients presented good oral hygienic habits. There were no significant d…

Flexible Perfluoropolyethers-Functionalized CNTs-Based UHMWPE Composites: A Study on Hydrogen Evolution, Conductivity and Thermal Stability
2022
Flexible conductive composites based on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) filled with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified by perfluoropolyethers (PFPEs) were produced. The bonding of PFPE chains, added in 1:1 and 2:1 weight ratios, on CNTs influences the dispersion of nanotubes in the UHMWPE matrix due to the non-polar nature of the polymer, facilitating the formation of nanofillers-rich conductive pathways and improving composites’ electrical conductivity (two to five orders of magnitude more) in comparison to UHMWPE-based nanocomposites obtained with pristine CNTs. Electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) was used to evaluate the morphological changes dur…
L'évolution de l'occupation humaine : l'analyse spatiale exploratoire des données.Le problème de l'incertitude et de l'hétérogénéité des données en a…
2011
The analysis of the evolution of the settlement requires a lot of methodological questioning. Despite a frequent use of the spatial analysis methods, few works return to their methodological problems. This article proposes to make a comparison and a discussion around two exploratory statistical methods (the K function of Ripley and the Kernel Density Estimation). It seems that scale, quality and quantity of input data, are three essential parameters to be taken into account so as to lead a spatial analysis in archaeology. In intrinsic way, archaeological data are non homogeneous. For that purpose, our article proposes a multi scalar approach integrating the non homogeneousness character of …
Biomimetic strategy towards gelatin coatings on PET. Effect of protocol on coating stability and cell-interactive properties
2019
Gelatin-modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) surfaces have been previously realized via an intermediate dopamine coating procedure that resulted in surfaces with superior haemocompatibility compared to unfunctionalized PET. The present study addresses the biocompatibility assessment of these coated PET surfaces. In this context, the stability of the gelatin coating upon exposure to physiological conditions and its cell-interactive properties were investigated. The proposed gelatin–dopamine-PET surfaces showed an increased protein coating stability up to 24 days and promoted the attachment and spreading of both endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs). In parallel, physi…
Tangents to fractal curves and surfaces
2010
International audience; The aim of our work is to specify and develop a geometric modeler, based on the formalism of iterated function systems with the following objectives: access to a new universe of original, various, aesthetic shapes, modeling of conventional shapes (smooth surfaces, solids) and unconventional shapes (rough surfaces, porous solids) by defining and controlling the relief (surface state) and lacunarity (size and distribution of holes). In this context we intend to develop differential calculus tools for fractal curves and surfaces defined by IFS. Using local fractional derivatives, we show that, even if most fractal curves are nowhere differentiable, they admit a left and…
Fractional Maximal Functions in Metric Measure Spaces
2013
Abstract We study the mapping properties of fractional maximal operators in Sobolev and Campanato spaces in metric measure spaces. We show that, under certain restrictions on the underlying metric measure space, fractional maximal operators improve the Sobolev regularity of functions and map functions in Campanato spaces to Hölder continuous functions. We also give an example of a space where fractional maximal function of a Lipschitz function fails to be continuous.
Building on 150 Years of Knowledge : The Freshwater Isopod Asellus aquaticus as an Integrative Eco-Evolutionary Model System
2021
Interactions between organisms and their environments are central to how biological diversity arises and how natural populations and ecosystems respond to environmental change. These interactions involve processes by which phenotypes are affected by or respond to external conditions (e.g., via phenotypic plasticity or natural selection) as well as processes by which organisms reciprocally interact with the environment (e.g., via eco-evolutionary feedbacks). Organism-environment interactions can be highly dynamic and operate on different hierarchical levels, from genes and phenotypes to populations, communities, and ecosystems. Therefore, the study of organism-environment interactions requir…
B–T phase diagram of Pd/Fe/Ir(111) computed with parallel tempering Monte Carlo
2017
We use an atomistic spin model derived from density functional theory calculations for the ultra-thin film Pd/Fe/Ir(111) to show that temperature induces coexisting non-zero skyrmion and antiskyrmion densities. We apply the parallel tempering Monte Carlo method in order to reliably compute thermodynamical quantities and the B-T phase diagram in the presence of frustrated exchange interactions. We evaluate the critical temperatures using the topological susceptibility. We show that the critical temperatures depend on the magnetic field in contrast to previous work. In total, we identify five phases: spin spiral, skyrmion lattice, ferromagnetic phase, intermediate region with finite topologic…
