Effect of silica-type sol–gel carrier’s structure and morphology on a supported Ziegler–Natta catalyst for ethylene polymerization

Abstract Silica xerogels with different structures and morphology, synthesized using a sol–gel procedure, were used as a carrier of vanadium catalysts (VOCl 3 /AlEt 2 Cl) for ethylene polymerization. Two techniques of catalyst synthesis were applied: slurry impregnation and gas-phase adsorption and the relevant polymerization methods were then employed. The effect of the carrier structure and morphology on the vanadium loading in the catalysts, the catalyst’s activity and kinetic stability were investigated.

Neutral deoxyribonucleases of HeLa S3 cells: electrophoretic separation, characterization, substrate specificity and mode of action.

Extracts of HeLa S3 cells were electrophoresed on polyacrylamide gels; gel slices were eluted and the eluates were assayed for DNase activities against native and denatured DNA substrates in the presence of MgCl2 or Na2EDTA. Aliquots of each eluate were also assayed for their ability to nick the circular supercoiled PM2 phage DNA to distinguish endonucleases from exonucleases. Peaks of endonuclease activities were characterized as forming 3′-phospho-oligonucleotides or 5′-phospho-oligonucleotides by the use of oligonucleotides produced by these enzymes as substrates for the 5′-phosphate-specific snake venom exonuclease. Development of Antioxidant Protein Extracts from Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata) Side Streams Assisted by Pressurized Liquid Extraction (PLE)

The pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) technique was used, for the first time, to obtain protein extracts with antioxidant activity from side streams (muscle, heads, viscera, skin, and tailfins) of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) in order to give added value to these underutilized matrices. Extraction conditions previously optimized for sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) side streams were applied. Protein recovery percentages were 22% (muscle), 33% (heads), 78% (viscera), 24% (skin), and 26% (tailfins), which represented an increase of 1.2–4.5-fold compared to control samples (extraction by stirring). Physics of agarose fluid gels: Rheological properties and microstructure

Agarose, a strongly gelling polysaccharide, is a common ingredient used to optimize the viscoelastic properties of a multitude of food products. Through aggregation of double helices via hydrogen bonds while cooling under quiescent conditions it forms firm and brittle gels. However, this behavior can be altered by manipulating the processing conditions viz shear. For example, gelation under shear leads to microgel particles with large surface area, which in turn leads to completely different rheological properties and texture. Evaluation of microbial diversity during the manufacture of Fior di Latte di Agerola, a traditional raw milk pasta-filata cheese of the Naples area

Microbial diversity of the raw milk for the production of Fior di Latte di Agerola and its changes during cheesemaking were studied. Viable counts showed that at the end of curd ripening, loads of lactic acid bacteria, both mesophilic and thermophilic rods and cocci, higher than those commonly evidenced in similar cheeses produced by using natural or commercial starters, were detected. Improved resolution power of electrophoretic fractionation of DNA using a voltage gradient up and down application

The improved resolution power of electrophoretic fractionation of DNA in a wide range of molecular masses is demonstrated using an "up and down" application of voltage gradient gel electrophoresis (VGGE). This application also allows separation of different DNA fragments which are poorly fractionated in conventional electrophoresis.

The impact of self-oxidation on the dosimetric performance of ferrous-sulfate/xylenol-orange gels

Since their introduction in the 1980’s, most of the research on ferrous-sulfate gel dosimeters has aimed at minimizing the ferric ion diffusion phenomena that blur the 3D distribution of the signal. However, equally important are the spontaneous oxidation effects, which alter the sensitivity of the gels over time. In some gels, this effect is very pronounced and must be accounted for even when production, calibration and use of the gels are separated by just a few days. In other cases, the effect is much milder, but should still be properly accounted for when gels are used over a long period a time, such as in the proposed monitoring of adaptive radiotherapy treatments. PVA-GTA Fricke gel: studio della risposta NMR in funzione della concentrazione degli additivi e studi preliminari con scanner MRI 7 T

Sono stati analizzati tramite rilassometria NMR ed acquisizioni MRI dosimetri gel di tipo Fricke realizzati utilizzando un'innovativa matrice gel sintetica e tessuto equivalente: Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) attivando chimicamente il processo di gelificazione tramite l'aggiunta di Glutaraldehyde (GTA). Questi gel sono stati irradiati con fasci di fotoni (LINAC) nel range 0--20 Gy. Per valutare la sensibilità a fotoni è stata studiata la dipendenza dei tempi di rilassamento nucleari dalla dose e dalla concentrazione di ferro nei gel.
