Silencing and enhancement of second-harmonic generation in optical gap antennas
2012
International audience; Amplifying local electromagnetic fields by engineering optical interactions between individual constituents of an optical antenna is considered fundamental for efficient nonlinear wavelength conversion in nanometer-scale devices. In contrast to this general statement we show that high field enhancement does not necessarily lead to an optimized nonlinear activity. In particular, we demonstrate that second-harmonic responses generated at strongly interacting optical gap antennas can be significantly suppressed. Numerical simulations are confirming silencing of second-harmonic in these coupled systems despite the existence of local field amplification. We then propose a…
Impact of electromagnetic fields and heat on spin transport signals in Y3Fe5O12
2019
Exploring new strategies to perform magnon logic is a key requirement for the further development of magnon-based spintronics. In this paper, we realize a three-terminal magnon transport device to study the possibility of manipulating magnonic spin information transfer in a magnetic insulator via localized magnetic fields and heat generation. The device comprises two parallel Pt wires as well as a Cu center wire that are deposited on the ferrimagnetic insulator ${\mathrm{Y}}_{3}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$. While the Pt wires act as spin current injector and detector, the Cu wire is used to create local magnetostatic fields and additional heat, which impact both the magnetic configur…
Corrective meshless particle formulations for time domain Maxwell's equations
2007
AbstractIn this paper a meshless approximation of electromagnetic (EM) field functions and relative differential operators based on particle formulation is proposed. The idea is to obtain numerical solutions for EM problems by passing up the mesh generation usually required to compute derivatives, and by employing a set of particles arbitrarily placed in the problem domain. The meshless Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method has been reformulated for solving the time domain Maxwell's curl equations. The consistency of the discretized model is investigated and improvements in the approximation are obtained by modifying the numerical process. Corrective algorithms preserving meshless consiste…
Acoustic manipulation of electron-hole pairs in GaAs at room temperature
2004
We demonstrate the optically detected long-range (>100 μm) ambipolar transport of photogenerated electrons and holes at room temperature by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in (In,Ga)As-based quantum well structures coupled to an optical microcavity. We also show the control of the propagation direction of the carriers by a switch composed of orthogonal SAW beams, which can be used as a basic control gate for information processing based on ambipolar transport.
Measurement of white wines resistance against oxidation by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy
2018
International audience; Free radical theory of aging hypothesizes that oxygen-derived radicals are responsible for the storage-related flavor instability in wine. In an optimal situation, a balanced-distribution exists between oxidants and antioxidants among wines intrinsic/extrinsic metabolites. Based on the kinetic study of POBN-1-hydroxyethyl spin adduct (POBN-1-HER) formation in wines initiated via the Fenton reaction, a novel tool based on EPR spin trapping methodology was developed to quantify wines resistance against oxidation. Antioxidant capacities of wines were evaluated according to POBN-1-HER maximum signal intensity (Imax POBN-1-HER) and rate formation (r(POBN-1-HER)) kinetic p…
A comparative assessment of the accuracy of electronic apex locator (Root ZX) in the presence of commonly used irrigating solutions
2013
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of Root ZX in determining working length in presence of normal saline, 0.2% chlorhexidine and 2.5% of sodium hypochlorite. Material and Methods: Sixty extracted, single rooted, single canal human teeth were used. Teeth were decoronated at CEJ and actual canal length determined. Then working length measurements were obtained with Root ZX in presence of normal saline 0.9%, 0.2% chlorhexidine and 2.5% NaOCl. The working length obtained with Root ZX were compared with actual canal length and subjected to statistical analysis. Results: No statistical significant difference was found between actual canal length and Root ZX measurements in pres…
A disponibilidade léxica dos estudantes de educação secundária de valência
2019
This research focuses on another research conducted in a bilingual educational context between Spanish and Valencian, with secondary school students, as is the case in the city of Valencia. In this context, the influence of the Valencian language is not as strong as in other areas of the Valencian Community, due to the presence of second and third generation speakers from Spanish-speaking contexts. In this way, we aim to check if the modality of schooling, carried out by students at the beginning and end of the secondary stage, between the Teaching Program in Valencian and the Progressive Incorporation Program, has some influence on their vocabulary available in Spanish.
Desalination in small islands: the case study of Lampedusa (Italy)
2018
Desalination represents a common solution to overcome the water scarcity in small island. A case study is presented, considering the island of Lampedusa, located at south of Sicily (Italy). As many small islands in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Lampedusa presents a small standalone electrical grid, entrusted to old diesel engines. For more, the renewable energy sources are extremely underdeveloped in this territory. Lampedusa is regularly affected by water scarcity, so freshwater is produced by desalination plant and sometimes transported by boat from Sicily. As sustainable solution, the paper firstly analyses the energy demand for desalination and then proposes the installation of a…
Performance evaluation of hybrid RO/MEE systems powered by a WTE plant
2008
Abstract The solid waste management is, in different contexts, a very critical issue. The use of landfills can no longer be considered a satisfactory environmental solution, therefore new methods have to be chosen and waste-to-energy (WTE) plants would provide an answer. Today's WTE plants are a far cry from their polluting predecessors. Using modern combustion and pollution control technology, WTE plants are able to retrieve considerable amounts of energy from waste combustion while minimizing emissions. As we know, is possible to recover thermal energy by combusting municipal solid waste (MSW) for electricity generation and district heating. However, with everincreasing population and rap…
A study on forecasting electricity production and consumption in smart cities and factories
2019
Abstract The electrical power sector must undergo a thorough metamorphosis to achieve the ambitious targets in greenhouse gas reduction set forth in the Paris Agreement of 2015. Reducing uncertainty about demand and, in case of renewable electricity generation, supply is important for the determination of spot electricity prices. In this work we propose and evaluate a context-based technique to anticipate the electricity production and consumption in buildings. We focus on a household with photovoltaics and energy storage system. We analyze the efficiency of Markov chains, stride predictors and also their combination into a hybrid predictor in modelling the evolution of electricity producti…
