Fast Volumetric Reconstruction of Human Body through Superquadrics
2013
This paper describes a technique to reconstruct the volumes of the human body. For this purpose, are introduced mathematical objects able to represent 3d shapes, called super quadrics. These objects are positioned in the space according the captures made by a Microsoft Kinect device and are composed to represent the volumes of the human body. The employment of quaternions provides a relevant speedup for the rotation of the volumes and allows to follow the human movements in real time and reduced computational cost.
COURAGE at CheckThat! 2022: Harmful Tweet Detection using Graph Neural Networks and ELECTRA
2022
In this paper we propose a deep learning model based on graph machine learning (i.e. Graph Attention Convolution) and a pretrained transformer language model (i.e. ELECTRA). Our model was developed to detect harmful tweets about COVID-19 and was used to tackle subtask 1C (harmful tweet detection) at the CheckThat!Lab shared task organized as part of CLEF 2022. In this binary classification task, our proposed model reaches a binary F1 score (positive class label, i.e. harmful tweet) of 0.28 on the test set. We demonstrate that our approach outperforms the official baseline by 8% and describe our model as well as the experimental setup and results in detail. We also refer to limitations of th…
Ancora sulle "esplosive palatali" nelle inchieste dell'Atlante Linguistico del Mediterraneo (ALM): i punti albanesi
2021
2021
We observe insult as a linguistic form (Dérive and Dérive 2004; Laforest and Vincent 2004; Lagorgette and Larrivée 2004) within a deliberately heterogeneous, chronologically and genre-wise, corpus of comics and GR. Since this category of literature tends to reproduce a semblance of oral and informal language, our study will also observe insult and swearing as forms of social interaction (Ernotte and Rosier 2004) in the context of all degrees of offense and rudeness expressed in comics and GR from the 1930s to the present; from the weakest (Tintin, Picsou, Almanacco Topolino) to the strongest (De Plomb et de sang by Seif Eddine Nechi; La guerre des tranchées by Jacques Tardi; Peppino Impasta…
Abitare la diaspora in Europa. Il graphic novel come forma di geopolitica popolare
2016
Somali refugees who fled the collapse of their homeland and resettled in EU narrate ‘who they are’ through the graphic novel Meet the Somalis. This paper explores their counter/story to undermine the Fortress Europe’s discourse. The main issue is to look at the diaspora through the trajectory of the journey and the “settling in” phase. The graphic novel as “remarkable antidote” (Said, 2002) narrates stereotypes, racisms and successes of the Somali people, helping the reader to understand them as individuals, with distinct experiences and separate stories.
Towards a unified process model for graphemic buffer disorder and deep dysgraphia
2006
Models based on the competitive queuing (CQ) approach can explain many of the effects on dysgraphic patients’ spelling attributed to disruption of the “graphemic output buffer”. Situating such a model in the wider spelling system, however, raises the question of what happens when input to the buffer (e.g., from a semantic system) is degraded while the buffer remains intact. We present a preliminary exploration of predictions following from the CQ approach. We show that the CQ account of the graphemic buffer predicts and explains the finding that deep dysgraphic patients generally show features of graphemic buffer disorder, as disrupted input from a damaged semantic system has an inevitable …
Identifying modularity structure of a genetic network in gene expression profile data
2009
Aim of this paper is to define a new statistical framework to identify central modules in Gaussian Graphical Models (GGMs) estimated by gene expression data measured on a sample of patients with negative molecular response to Imatinib. Imanitib is a drug used to treat certain types of cancer that in many statistical studies has been reported to have a significant clinical effect on chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase as well as in blast crisis. For central module in a GGM we intend a module containing genes that are defined differently expressed.
Robustness of dynamic gene regulatory networks in Neisseria
2014
Gene regulatory networks are made of highly tuned, sparse and dynamical operations. We consider the case of the Neisseria meningitidis bacterium, a causative agent of life-threatening infections such as meningitis, and aim to infer a robust net- work of interactions across sixty proteins based on a detailed time course gene expres- sion study. We consider the problem of estimating a sparse dynamic Gaussian graphical model with L1 penalized maximum likelihood under a structured precision matrix. The structure can consist of specific time dynamics, known presence or absence of links in the graphical model or equality constraints on the parameters. The authors developed a new optimization algo…
Automatic differentiation of melanoma from dysplastic nevi.
2015
International audience; Malignant melanoma causes the majority of deaths related to skin cancer. Nevertheless, it is the most treatable one, depending on its early diagnosis. The early prognosis is a challenging task for both clinicians and dermatologist, due to the characteristic similarities of melanoma with other skin lesions such as dysplastic nevi. In the past decades, several computerized lesion analysis algorithms have been proposed by the research community for detection of melanoma. These algorithms mostly focus on differentiating melanoma from benign lesions and few have considered the case of melanoma against dysplastic nevi. In this paper, we consider the most challenging task a…
