A multiplex RTi-PCR reaction for simultaneous detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus on fresh, minimally pr…

2007

In this work, a new multiplex single-tube real-time PCR approach is presented for the detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus, three of the more frequent food-borne bacterial pathogens that are usually investigated in a variety of food matrices. The study includes the design and specificity testing, of a new primer and probe specific for Salmonella spp. Reaction conditions were adjusted for the simultaneous amplification and detection of specific fragments in the beta-glucuronidase (uidA, E. coli) and Thermonulease (nuc, Sta. aureus) genes, and in the replication origin sequence (oriC, Salmonella spp.). Melting-curve analysis using a SYBR Green I RTi…

Axial (apical-basal) expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-survival genes in the lake baikal demosponge Lubomirskia baicalensis.

2006

Like in all other Metazoa, also in sponges (Porifera) proliferation, differentiation, and death of cells are controlled by apoptotic processes, thus allowing the establishment of a Bauplan (body plan). The demosponge Lubomirskia baicalensis from the Lake Baikal is especially suitable to assess the role of the apoptotic molecules, since its grade of construction is highly elaborated into an encrusting base and branches composed of modules lined up along the apical-basal axis. The four cDNAs, ALG-2, BAK, MA-3, and Bcl-2, were isolated from this sponge species. The expression levels of these genes follow characteristic gradients. While the proapoptotic genes are highly expressed at the base of…

Geo‐referencing naturalistic driving data using a novel method based on vehicle speed

2013

Naturalistic driving is an experimentation model that allows us to recognise the driving modes observing the driver's behaviour at the wheel of a set of people in natural conditions during long periods of observation. This research methodology aims at increasing the representativeness of the data collected in opposition to data stemming from highly controlled laboratory experiments. However, naturalistic driving research designs produce large volumes of data that are difficult to handle. Thus, it is very important to work with suitable methods for representing and interpreting data, allowing us to observe the variability of the results. The aim of this study is to implement a new methodolog…

A framework for data quality handling in enterprise service bus

2013

Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is proposed to address the application integration problem by facilitating communication among different systems in a loosely coupled, standard-based, and protocol independent manner. Data sources are maintained out of the ESB's control and there should be a mechanism to select the most suitable data source among all available data sources. Especially, when two or more data sources are about the same object. For instance, it is normal to use more than one sensor to measure pressure or temperature at a particular point. Data quality can play an important role in selecting data sources in ESB since quality of data is an essential factor in the success of organizat…

Prediction of arrival times and human resources allocation for container terminal

2011

Increasing competition in the container shipping sector has meant that terminals are having to equip themselves with increasingly accurate analytical and governance tools. A transhipment terminal is an extremely complex system in terms of both organisation and management. Added to the uncertainty surrounding ships’ arrival time in port and the costs resulting from over-underestimation of resources is the large number of constraints and variables involved in port activities. Predicting ships delays in advance means that the relative demand for each shift can be determined with greater accuracy, and the basic resources then allocated to satisfy that demand. To this end, in this article we pro…

Communist Authorities Contra Brother Kloc. The Battlefront Against The Illegal Trade of Devotional Items in The Koźle District In 1965

2019

Energy performance improvements of a DEC system due to wet heat exchangers

2011

This work concerns an innovative desiccant and evaporative cooling (DEC) system for building air conditioning. The original system is an experimental DEC air handling unit installed at the Solar Laboratory of the University of Palermo and recently modified and updated. With the aim to increase the cooling effect due to water evaporation in the return air flow rate, the sensible heat exchanger was replaced with two cross flow flat plate heat exchangers installed in series, with continuous humidification of the secondary air flow. The new thermodynamic cycle is theoretically described and the realization of the real application is shown. Detailed operational data and energy performance indica…

A new interface to couple thin-layer chromatography with laser desorption/atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry for plate scanni…

2005

An interface to allow on-line qualitative and quantitative full-plate detection and analysis of compounds separated by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) is presented. A continuous wave diode laser is employed as a desorption source. Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry ionizes and subsequently identifies the desorbed sample molecules. Besides direct laser desorption on untreated TLC plates, graphite particles were used as a matrix to couple in the laser power and improve the efficiency of desorption.

Functional implications of bound phenolic compounds and phenolics–food interaction: A review

2022

Sizeable scientific evidence indicates the health benefits related to phenolic compounds and dietary fiber. Various phenolic compounds-rich foods or ingredients are also rich in dietary fiber, and these two health components may interrelate via noncovalent (reversible) and covalent (mostly irreversible) interactions. Notwithstanding, these interactions are responsible for the carrier effect ascribed to fiber toward the digestive systemand canmodulate the bioaccessibility of phenolics, thus shaping health-promoting effects in vivo. On this basis, the present review focuses on the nature, occurrence, and implications of the interactions between phenolics and food components. Covalent and nonc…

Apple-products phytochemicals and processing: a review.

2009

Epidemiological studies have linked the consumption of apples with reduced risk of some cancers, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and diabetes. Extensive research exists on apples and the health benefits of their beverages and phytochemicals. The purpose of this paper is to review the most recent literature in this area focusing on phytochemicals, phytochemical bioavailability and antioxidant behavior.
